Welcome to the last update of 2025.
Phew! I've actually had to work for three days since we last chatted.
Two online seminars and one hotel one.
They don't feel like work at all, a real pleasure.
Of course the hotel one is the most enjoyable. What a brilliant group.
I already knew half the audience very well as quite a few attend regularly.
We got some good trade ideas and also plenty of fun and banter along the way and a decent Xmas lunch.
I ordered more pizza than usual for afterwards and I have never seen such a rush.
By the time I finished chatting to someone not a slice to be had.
A fun session in the bar afterwards which ended up with the biggest bar bill for me ever, even though Gail didn't come this year"¦
One chap was debating on whether to sign up for my subscription email the day after.
"You didn't look old or stressed enough to stop writing so I'll do it," he emailed.
Well, thanks. Glad it doesn't look like I'm going to drop dead just yet.
What can I say to you all?
Some lovely contributions, the knowledge in the room was outstanding.
And it's fab to see so many who've been doing this for so many years making such a success of it.
Several there handle their relatives' isas and sipps and interesting to note they all said it was harder to handle those accounts than their own.
They are more scared to lose their relatives' money than their own.
If you're a beginner I've booked March 14th for the hotel and made it a Saturday as we won't need live markets.

We're just about to head off "to the country" for a couple of days!
As Londoners we don't get out much, so it'll be bracing walks and hotel breakfasts.
And we also get to give a run out to a new purchase!
With the demise of the car sharing platform Zipcar (thanks Rachel) we had to get a car again.
And after watching "The Italian Job" with Michael Caine we decided to blow the bloody doors off and get a mini.
So far it's been a fun runaround.
It has surprising "poke" and handles really well.
After being used to the over complex and nannying controls of bigger cars it's a joy to have a simple and uncomplicated dashboard.
No warning bleeps of any kind and easy to put heat up and down without a degree in mechanics.
I guess we will see how it handles the motorway as we head outta town this afternoon into what looks like gusty wind and rain.
I got chatting with a neighbour a few doors away, she's 84 and an amazing example of how to age brilliantly.
Invited her to come round for dinner and we had a fantastic evening.
She is full of life and vigour, big in the local church community where she's a lay preacher.
What a life as a single woman. She's written a small book about her life.
She's a decent scrabble player and we had a great game,
She queried "remeet" but it is in the electronic scrabble dictionary.
She got away with "vant" which is also in there.
It's fabulous to know she's there but her diary is so busy I'm going round to hers for scrabble in the new year when she has an occasional spare evening.
Indeed she seems to have a number of boyfriends as male callers were non stop while sitting at her place..
This is the way to live! Too many people retire, get bored, some just die of boredom.
One person we knew died at 80. But she gave up on herself and life and saw hardly anyone.
Or neighbour meanwhile has social engagements every day, eats well, cycles and walks fast.
Opposite us, Ken is now 96. He's up and about every day gardening, looks after a working neighbour's dog.
He's on the buses and trains and takes dogs to the park.
I find both inspirational and I hope to emulate them both in older age. (Hey I am not quite there yet, thanks).
We should be doing another retreat sometime next year.

Lots of people trying side hustles at the moment.
Actually it was side hustles that helped me quit work for good in 2001.

Naked Rambling
Like "Xmas tea" (?) salted caramel something or other, "Boxing Day Fig Jam".
The minimum mark up for a hamper is 100pc, but it is often well above that in some cases up to 400pc! No wonder they are such a big business.
And frankly if you're sending a hamper to someone let's face it, it's pretty lazy, a quick payment link and you're done.
There is often a bit of excitement in receiving one, probably just before Xmas. The hamper might look big but it's mainly straw.
And how many items will you really lose?The receiver ends up with "goodies" that stay in the cupboard till they're chucked out.
I have brandy butter and "Xmas Chutney" (??) left over from last year.
Pannettone cakes are full of additives and preservative cakes in a box come round every Christmas.
The best buy dates can extend for up to a year which pretty much sums up what you're eating.
If you give one you just paid way too much.
Think of the person receiving it, what are you supposed to do with it? Put it on the kitchen table and hope someone else eats it?
Not had one given to me so far, fingers crossed.
Fallout **** Amazon
The welcome return of the fabulous and very silly post apocalyptic series based on a video game.
The show is obsessed with blowing up heads and 50s music but that's part of the fun.
It's all tongue in cheek stuff and played for laughs. Welcome back!
Pluribus ***** Apple
Show of the year and Apple's biggest ever hit by far.
The fun part is it's an allegory for so many possible things.
Maybe AI? Being nice to us the whole time for a while before maybe in the future turning nasty?
Or, do you just accept what other people want all the time and just rebel?
Or is it all about living in isolation? Or about living in a communist state which works and everyone works together?
Whichever, it's brilliant as to be expected from the Breaking Bad founder.
Squid Game: The Challenge **** Netflix
This shouldn't really work but it does as 456 play for real (except the shootings) to win over 4 million dollars.
Lots of alliances, back stabbing and simple bad luck keep us entertained.
It's a shame they missed out an element of the fictionalised show, the gambling by the rich elite.
They could have had this as a side plot with people maybe staking real money?
I have reached the 18th day of whamageddon! Yes not even one note of Last Xmas.
That's the best achieved ever, can I make it to day 25?
We're out for lunch on the 24th. I suspect I'll be lucky if it isn't played by the restaurant but you never know!
The radio goes back on the day after Xmas. Apparently Kylie (how could you?) has a Xmas track out which supposedly is terrible.
Don't care, not listening.
Looks like I won't be able to get into the US now they want to look at your last 5 years of social media.
When I tell them "I don't have any social media" I won't be believed will I?
"No Tik Tok? No. "No Facebook?" Never. "No Twitter/X". Nope.

Let people shout at me in the bar over the noise about their favourite share.
Didn't wash my hands. No hand gel. No mask.
Touched a hotel bed, the remote control then scratched my face.
Ate hotel food. Double dipped into a bowl of mints.
Finally breathed in the crap pushed out by the hotel toilet hand dryer.
Nothing. Not even a sneeze.

Lovely entertaining writing while also giving the lowdown on all the hardships faced by farmers.

You may be buying at the top and could easily lose money. Also I can make terrible mistakes and have done in the past. I could also sell before you or before the share tanks. I may still be holding in a year when you sold at a loss. Always do your own research, don't jump in blindly. Market makers are very clever at knowing how to make you pay top dollar and then push you out at a loss. This site is about sensible investment and learning how to trade sensibly and is not a tipping site. Beware. Never push buy on anything till you've done proper research and got yourself a sensible price.

Markets seem to be strong for the moment, cheered on by inflation falling.
Probably an interest rate cut today (Writing this early doors as off to the country).
Year end tends to be good, see further down for latest Santa Rally news!
Of course, who knows though? Maybe Scrooge will come out to play.
And the US market has a big say in the matter.

I am so knackered and just saw my email backlog (eek!!!) and I will try and answer you all before shutting down for the hols. It might take some time though.
I can't remember buying a new issue for years, indeed only shorting them.
That's because since Covid all new issues have been launched at silly overpriced prices.
However I had a look at one launched last week and was amazed!
It actually looked reasonable value and so I bought some..
It's called Power Probe.
Odd name given it makes it sound like a new brand of sex toy"¦
It describes itself as a leading producer of automotive electrical diagnostic tools for professional service technicians. If you're one of those do email me and tell me what you think!)
It's raised more than £11m to help open a US facility.
But what I like is unusually we have some figures to work off and profits seem to be growing very nicely.
Valuation doesn't look overpriced compared with recent IPOs and a decent dividend is expected.
Global market opportunity is expected to reach over $2.2bln by 2032.
This could be a very nice one to tuck away in any isa, forget about it and see how it grows over time.
I have tucked it away and expect to remain in and possibly keep topping up. Of course, get out on any first question marks appearing.
We had a couple of shipping experts at the hotel seminar and we ended up discussion the merits of Clarkson and Braemar.
While shipping is high risk, it can also be high reward.
In the end I went for some Braemar and managed to pick some up at the sell price using Direct Market Access,

Braemar trades on a pe under 9 with a decent dividend.
If it can achieve anywhere near 2027 forecasts it looks mighty cheap.
It says it has recently returned to a net cash balance sheet.
Upside: New offices in South Africa and Dubai goes well, improved charter rates and a record order book.
Downside: It talks of "global market headwinds" and "geopolitical uncertainty".
So, while there is risk there at current valuation that seems in the price.
My aim is a trade from the low 200s where I bought to sell at the 260p high area, looking for 20-25% upside.
I'm off to a good start by using DMA. I haven't had to pay any spread on it.
I'll try to show how DMA works live at the next online seminar, Jan 30th.
The infamous "QPR Gary" came up with a trade idea "Tristel" at the hotel seminar.
(My female dentist has a soft spot for Gary after meeting him at my recent book launch on a boat on the Thames. She's always asking after him"¦)
It looks like a good pick after a statement a few days ago.
This one's all about infection prevention products.
Given the terrible flu season we're having you'd guess its products are much in demand.
It doesn't look cheap trading over 20x but it does have nice net cash.
Its rating though does seem justified as current strong growth in the USA could easily exceed expectations and I wonder if the next statement might be an "ahead of".
Sales of its major product in the US has already done in 5 months what it did in a whole year.
This has resulted in a 510% increase in total US revenue compared to last year.
If this carries on, the rating could be justified with possibly more upside to break out through highs.

The share that got the most votes at the hotel seminar was Journeo.
I already have over £100k of Journeo which is enough for now.
Nearly everyone raised their hand for Journeo.
With forecast profits next year of over £7m and net cash of nearly £14m, profit to market cap is only around 10 which looks too cheap even after rises.
Look down the news items for Journeo this year and you'll see continued contract wins including a growing business in the US for its New York subway displays.
Chuck in a 4% dividend and this could be a great performer for 2026.
I'd have thought there is a lovely upside here for next year and probably a core holding for any isa.
Of course though usual caveat applies and even what seems a good one should be sold the moment a question mark appears.
Because you never know and great can turn to crap quite quickly!
Legal outfit Knights Group has a lovely 150-200p trading range and hopefully I've taken advantage of it!
It looks well undervalued at the lower end (around now) and about fairly valued at the top end.
A nice low rating only just over 5x with a fab PEG and nice dividend.
Downside is highish debt after acquisitions but should start to fall.
It reports Jan 12th. At this undemanding valuation I'm in!
Onto sales.
Ezj went for a profit of £610, and the snx top up went for a loss of £350 after a vague badly written statement.
Frontier, profit £121 and the rest of Spi for £193.
Half FTC went for a profit of £5,310 after it doubled and a half. Seemed a sensible move!
It's the time of the year before a rally when I consider closing out some shorts. So:
Half the WPP short is closed for a profit of £650.
Softcat was closed for a plus of £1,930. WPP for a profit of £2,190.
And"¦ Time to close out the best short of the year.
Trainline which gave me a very nice £11,175 profit. Sometimes when a company hits the buffers you can make a profit.
Profits minus the losses then tots up at a profit of £19,899 for the site.

Xmas Rally latest news:
It was on, then off, then on again!
But as Chumbawamba wisely put it: "I get knocked down but I get up again".
I got on, I got off with a small profit.
At the hotel seminar I got the stops over break even and profits banked.
Now I am in again! This time trying to stay put.
We had chats about the Santa Rally at all three seminars and it's tricky to know where to put stops.
Like last year it can go up 100 then spike down 100! Best plan really is to decide how much you're prepared to lose if it goes tits up (pardon me).
Say for £5 a point have a 150 stop so max is £750. But if you get 300 pts upside you collect £1,500.
Sometimes rallies carry on into the new year.
There was a massive rise the other day, and not too much of a pullback. Maybe there is still time if you haven't had a go.
I suggest read my SB book, there is loads on the santa rally and how to play it, next day delivery.
Please make sure you definitely understand it and know what you are doing!

You'll need to put some money in but actually not much assuming your bet isn't large.
Well, farewell 2025.
How'd I do? A fab run until the last month where I gave some back but overall a nice profitable year.
My IG account says I made 30pc and my Barclays reckons 18pc. Interactive Investor doesn't have a clue how I did.
Anyway not sure if they are right, but I definitely have more in the pots than at year beginning of the year even though I withdrew some funds to buy stuff like a car.
The shorts did really well with much gains.
Best share ended up as Alpha Group which got bid for.
Bought around 800p, averaged up and ended up with £25k profits for the website and a ton more personally.
Other nice winners included Ish Robotics, Next 15, Filtronic, Volex and a massive win for Morgan Sindall. Future of Defence did good too.
The shorts all did well, shorting the restaurant and pub trades and Trainline worked well.
Biggest stink? We all have our stinkers, it isn't possible not to have one!
Paypoint probably the biggest loser with over £3k down the drain. It was in IG which doesn't have stops and I forgot about it. What a ninny.
Lost some nice profits I could have taken on Me Group and Spire.
Anyway remember one or two big winners will boost your portfolio and getting rid of losers fast will help.
My lesson from 2025? Topslice once you're in a big profit. I could have made a ton more if I hadn't held on to some winners for too long.

I use mainly Interactive Investor and Barclays and IG.
Interactive Investor is my favourite, I also have my SIPP with them.
Easy to use, and stop losses work well, plus cheap charges.
II has sent me a referral link if you want to try it for an ISA or SIPP.

Boy, what a gripper!
Definitely makes me glad I never ended up on a trading floor.
The cast of real-life characters there is not a pretty one!
Full time traders seem to be either alcoholics, drug abusers, loners, weirdos, passive-aggressive alpha males, know it alls or just a bit barmy.
And they are all certain of their own brilliance...
Frankly just check any of the discussion forums, all these characters are there..
Anyway, super read and a must buy for anyone interested in trading!

I've enjoyed reading "The Psychology of Money".
It's a best seller deservedly with 19 stories exploring how people think about money.

Just a 0.6 spread for the FTSE which is fantastic and the best I've found.
Spreads on FTSE 100 and 250 stocks are really tight, I shop around SB sites when I am about to trade for the best spread and this one keeps coming out the best.

I've finished the book on AI - "The Coming Wave".
It's a must read for any investor - I've learned a lot, the writer co-founded Deepmind, one of the world's leading AI cos.
It's fascinating, some of the conclusions are scary and it's good to try and understand it, though in the end he concludes AI will being a lot of benefits. It will also drive some shares down and some up.

I love companies with decent cash piles and I've developed a screen for shares with cash with Sharepad to go with my new book.
The screen goes with one of my strategies from the new book "Dash for Cash".
The idea is it picks up sensible shares with a cash pile for further examination.
I don't mean it to be "just buy any share on the screen." My idea is it's a start for further research as just because a company has a cash pile doesn't necessarily mean it's a great company.

Trade tables follow! Trades are current open and recently closed trades. Closed trades feature the closing price and the amount I won or lost. All others are open. Trades get updated a little later than the narrative. Trading costs are ignored, however I also do not add in dividend payments and with the kinds of companies I buy, dividends tend to equal or outweigh costs. Spread rollovers ignored for web purposes. Tables as accurate as poss however a mistake or two can creep in and very occasionally if I forgot I sold or bought something it will be added at a later time. Trades first reported in the diary under Markets every other Thursday afternoon.
