Hurrah, it's a hotel seminar next Friday and can't wait to see those of you coming.
Before Covid I used to do at least 6 hotel events.
Indeed just before it hit I did a beginners, intermediate and a spreadbetting one, we struggled to fit people into the room.
Then it all went online.
I thought hotel events would make a comeback but not so much. There is only interest in about two a year, the rest only want online.
I really miss them. You may think it's easier for me, I can just sit in the kitchen from 10 till 5 online teaching
In a way it is easier online, and I don't even have to put trousers on.
With hotel events a lot goes into it. I have to arrange the hotel, the food, drinks, breaks, technicals and it all takes some effort.
But for me the effort is worth it and it's much more rewarding.
Meeting real people and discussing things in real life is a whole lot better and way more satisfying.
People just don't want to travel these days but there is something so great about proper human interaction, the fun and the banter.
Looking forwards to seeing some of you I've met before, and some of you who I've known for many years who come time and time again. In some cases for 15 years!
It's lovely to catch up. As usual a lovely lunch awaits, plenty of Yorkshire tea and fun snacks and whatever the markets have in store for us that day.
And some banter in the bar afterwards with a drink on me.
Elizabeth will open up the room (turn left on entering the hotel and carry on to the end of the corridor) from 9.30am and you can log onto the fast internet rightaway.
Please help yourselves to the drinks and snacks outside all day. And remember to hand in your reg number to the hotel before you leave for the free parking.
I hope you all have a great day and remember whenever I do a hotel event shares always crash on the day so get shorting the day before!
Good luck to all taking part in the trade idea of the day competition.
There is space left, so if you can get the day off and would like to come email me for details.
I'll report back on any trades that came up next time.
It was fun to do another live internet radio show last week,
By the end of the live show I was totally knackered.
There is so much response coming in live then there is a question of pressing the right buttons and remembering to get the levels right.
Congrats to Ben for winning the trading song comp with "Don't Push It Don't Force It" which is exactly right when it comes to share trading!
Thanks for the kind comments, I'll do another in June date tbc.
Summer has started! Wooohhh!
At last we can enjoy warm weather and sun and forget about all the silly crap we have to put up with from the (not) beloved leaders of the country.
Of course we love to moan and so I expect we'll hear a lot of whingeing that it's now way too hot.
Also expect a hosepipe ban within days!
Sunbeds are ready for the bank holiday weekend and we've invited a few neighbours over for the afternoon BH.
All age ranges from a one year old to an 88 year old.
Lots of M and S goodies will be provided now I am an M and S shareholder, you never know all the stuff I'll buy will stick a penny on the share price.
I expect there will be some hard fought scrabble games especially from the 88-year-old who frankly uses bad words I would never have thought she'd even know.
However I have been practising playing scrabble against a cheating AI bot. I am ready!
I sometimes think about retiring from writing about shares and doing the website.
It takes time and effort for not much reward. Just when I think I'll announce retirement in say 6 months I get a nice email and that always stops me.
This is the kind of message (this one from Richard this week) that stops me.
"I took over running my SIPP and ISA's after reading your book and coming to one of the early seminars near Heathrow, must be getting on for 20 years ago
.This is just a message of sincere thanks, I started out with about £350k in my SIPP IN 2003 when I started drawdown, now have about £1M and at a guess, must have had £800k out of it, financial advisors find it incredible and hard to believe!
Dragon oil was a great success thanks to you. The biggest thing I learnt, do the research and don't sell too early! Never strayed outside FTSE 350, annoyed missed RR!
Biggest mistake was hanging onto losers too long but that was down to Ashtead Group, bought at about 80p early 2000's, sold at 50p few months later!
Anyway, you've helped myself and wife have a very comfortable retirement, thank you very much."
A pleasure Richard!
We should be doing another retreat in this year in early November.
Places are limited to only ten and you need to apply for one, we chat to you and make sure it's right for you.
Interested? Email me at robbiethetrader@aol.com with "2026 retreats interested". We'll then put you on a list to contact and allocate places on a first come first served basis.
People keep asking me which broker to use for their new ISA.
I use mainly Interactive Investor and Barclays and IG.
Interactive Investor is my favourite, I also have my SIPP with them.
Easy to use, and stop losses work well, plus cheap charges.
II has sent me a referral link if you want to try it for an ISA or SIPP.
If you add in more than 10k, you get a free year's subscription with them worth quite a few quid and I get £200 into my account.
Seems like a no brainer here is the link:
If they ask my acc is burnsrobbieburns@aol.com.
I did a podcast with Zeus Capital and Nick Searle who is the most lovely chap.
He even posted a lovely handwritten thank you letter afterwards. Sheer class.
You can hear be blabbing on about how I came to be a trader and suchlike.
https://zeuscapital.co.uk/adp-podcast/ scroll down to find the one with me.
Took the credit card tracker with me to Sri Lanka. Used it twice to locate where the cards were!
Do get some credit card style tags they are wonderful and just over £20!
Link to the ones I bought:
Put one in your passport wallet and one in your credit card wallet or purse.
Thank me when inevitably something gets lost.
Lots of people trying side hustles at the moment.
Actually it was side hustles that helped me quit work for good in 2001.
My best was and still is Telecom Plus which trades as Utilities Discount Warehouse.
You can sell energy, sim cards, mobiles, broadband and insurance wfh.
You get commission per customer plus an ongoing commission every time they use
a service for as long as they remain a customer.
No stock needed, all done online. If you're good with people and don't mind a lot of
"no thanks" could work for you.
You're backed by a billion plus FTSE 250 company and it's rated well by Which Magazine for good deals and excellent customer service.
If you think this could be a good side hustle for you, mail me with "side hustle" at robbiethetrader@aol.com and will send you some info.
Thanks for the feedback from recent events.
Gary:
" The arrangements and agenda were first class, delivered with Elizabeth's charm and efficiency and Robbie's natural charisma. The drill down on all the stock trading ideas
really cemented the knowledge received from the beginners seminar and all
merited the further investigation Robbie and the group undertook.
Having a look at Level 2, DMA and Spreadbetting was very much appreciated.
The day flew by and finished far too soon. I'm convinced I am now a better stock picker and trader as a result of both days with Robbie."
Anne:
My husband and I had a lovely time. We learned so much, the hotel was great and the lunch fantastic. We didn't leave the bar till midnight!
Dave:
"I've been a teacher for the last 30 years and I'm not sure I could have kept a group of pupils so captivated for so long. Humour and in-depth subject knowledge go a long way!
I loved seeing your thought process in deciding which shares to trade and level 2 was also an eye opener."
Phil:
"The seminar was delivered with huge integrity (there was Zero hidden agenda/ulterior motives, it was simple and open with some great laughs thrown in)
As much as I found myself trying to complicate the process and make it more sophisticated in my own tiny brain.
You also took the time to answer "every" question anyone posed. And it was every question. Loads of shares ideas to boot, but more importantly the process to find your own. Brilliant!
Naked Rambling
It's a real life Game of Thrones
Streeting plays the role of Petyr Baelish, the conniving scheming courtier who wants to be King.
He'll say or do anything to get the top job.
And he plays it well too, bringing back the European Union talk a stroke of genius to screw up the King of The North Burnham.
Burnham of course is Jon Snow, gets by on good looks but there isn't much behind the bluster.
Starmer is Stannis Baratheon, the leader who manages to make every mistake possible.
Rayner is Ygritte who is quite likely to say to the King of The North "You Know Nothing" (just before shagging him).
Lammy meanwhile is Ed Stark, knows he isn't up to his job and a bit thick.
And they had all better watch out because the Wildlings are rebelling and the King of the North may find himself deserted soon.
Hilariously Starmer must want Reform to win the by election.
And so does Streeting! If they win both stand a chance to be PM. If they lose, they don't!
Burnham wants to go back into Europe but can't say so or he'll lose.
As Sir Walter Scott commented "Oh what a tangled web we weave when we practise to deceive" (This quote is often mistakenly believed to be Shakespeare).
Burnham thought he was being clever by "going for a run" to show how much energy he has.
Sadly this misfired as he wore a pair of "short shorts".
Revealing a bit of bum crack isn't the greatest selling point.
It's a not so merry game of conniving and crappiness.
Congratulations if you are an Arsenal fan, a fully deserved win of the league.
Seems to me like a determined manager and players got them over the line.
And anyway it would have been boring if City won it again.
Meanwhile my team Fulham as always decided to end the season early as the players decided they'd done enough and couldn't be arsed to run about anymore.
Indeed in one game when the opposing team got a red card, Fulham decided five minutes later to get a red card as well, just to even things up again.
I wonder if Pep is leaving City because he thinks their overspending and dealings may end up with massive sanctions within the next few months?
Southampton has been dumped out of the playoffs, seems a bit excessive.
Isn't it just one plonker with a camera trying to be smart? To lose a potential £130m payout for that seems a bit much?
LEGENDS ***** Netflix
The series get better and better with Steve Coogan leading the way.
The customs officers with little experience continue their pretend personas and you have to be admire their braveness.
Based on a true story they deserve to be heroes for trying to stop the heroin trade in the 90s.
PRISONER ** Sky
Guess what the most important prisoner is being transported by.. Yes you guessed it by two cops on a motorbike and a couple in a car. And that's it.
And as usual they get overwhelmed by the baddies, as easy as you like.
Nothing new or original here but worst of all the two protagonists are handcuffed together throughout.
Surely the first thing they'd have done is smash the handcuffs?
CITADEL ** Amazon
I remember enjoying the first series but gave up quite quickly here.
It has a brilliant actors in it but it's just simply rather boring with formulaic baddies vs goodies.
Shame as it is an interesting concept.
Good news is the new series of Clarkson's Farm starts shortly early in June.
Can't wait, as it's just brilliant entertainment.
Congrats to the UK for getting one point instead of null points in the song contest.
I have the feeling that whoever gave us the point made a mistake and pressed the wrong button.
New Clarkson
Jeremy Clarkson's very funny take on farming is just out and is already in the top 20 books.
The latest escapades from the Diddly Squat farm.
Lovely entertaining writing while also giving the lowdown on all the hardships faced by farmers.
The book is very good value around half off the recommended price at just £11 here:

Markets
EMAILS: I do beg you not to send me emails asking me for advice on a particular share. It isn't legal for me to give you individual advice and all I do is send you a mail saying that, which wastes a lot of my time and yours too.
****
COPYING TRADES: I can't stop you from copying a trade I made but remember the price may already be a lot higher than I paid indeed I hope it is as buying at good prices is what I do for a living. You may be buying at the top and could easily lose money. Also I can make terrible mistakes and have done in the past. I could also sell before you or before the share tanks. I may still be holding in a year when you sold at a loss. Always do your own research, don't jump in blindly. Market makers are very clever at knowing how to make you pay top dollar and then push you out at a loss. This site is about sensible investment and learning how to trade sensibly and is not a tipping site. Beware. Never push buy on anything till you've done proper research and got yourself a sensible price.

Markets
Another pretty good spell in the markets which I hope you are all enjoying.
I know"¦ why? All the mess that's going on at home and abroad.
I suspect the reason is markets look ahead at least 6 months and it reckons the war will be settled and the Straits opened.
Let's see if they are right, if not there will be one mighty crash. Stop losses at the ready!
I am still buying stuff (and selling too!)
Science Group (SAG) was my share of the day on the live show.
An under the radar one it just gradually rises over time, kind of share I like.
This has a massive cash pile and yesterday it said it would either make an acquisition with the cash, or find a way to return cash to shareholders. (Maybe a special dividend?)
I bought most of my shares in this a couple of years ago and have just held patiently but this looks like a good time to add a few more.
Downside? Business is going ok but not exactly knocking the lights out so what happens next with an acquisition or buybacks/special will be a catalyst for more price rises.
Very good algo scores for Science and it qualifies for Greenblatt's Magic Formula which is usually a decent screen.
I expect to patiently hold and see what they do.
It went ex dividend today for 10p but fell less than that this morning which is a good sign.
For a nice longer-term isa hold, Science looks a good idea.
I bought some Marks and Spencers in the run up to its statement as I felt it would probably be bought up by the market.
Of course as it reported yesterday it got hit and lost money on the cyber incident.
But. The market looks forwards and it's a business that is doing fine.
Its reduced profits actually were better than the markets forecasted and I've added a shorter term spread bet as well.
My idea is for it to head back up to 400p where I'd hope to take profits.
I've had one or two mails asking me to give an example of a spreadbet.
For those not au fait with spreadbetting I'll show you exactly what I did later.
A lot of shares came up on the live radio show I did last week.
The show repeats 24/7 here:
https://fast.citrus3.com:2020/public/nakedtrader
One reported on the day was Babcock, one of the few defence companies that haven't risen a lot recently.
As I said on the show it looked like after a fall from 1400 to a tenner this could be a great chance to pick up some Babcock, I suggested waiting a little while and buy on weakness.
Which is what I did. The company took a £140m contract charge hit but that seems in the price for now.
A fresh buyback is starting and it did actually beat forecasts.
I think this looks like a good time to buy it for a return to say 1200p ish.
With the caveat that a stop is needed here in case the knife carries on falling.
I've topped up in spreadbetting firms IG and CMC Markets.
I've been banging on about these for a while!
Current volatility is superb for these companies.
IG's crypto services is proving popular as mug punters almost certainly lose their dough on the silly ponzi scheme.
Both companies are storming ahead and looks like there is some more to come.
New ipos have been disastrous over the last couple of years.
Always come onto the market at way too high a price and best shorted or left alone.
Sometimes though, a few months later after the inevitable massive fall they do become value and this looks like the case with Princes.
The maker of various food and drink's shares have been canned by the market since IPO, falling more than 30% from the initial placing at near 500p.
Now I'm thinking shares look value and I took advantage of a sudden further drop off after it said the head cheese was leaving.
After the falls the algoes like it, Pe is now under 10, PEG is superb and it has a massive net cash pile recently reported at £344m (excluding lease liabilities). .
All of which makes me think this looks very decent value, taking out some of the cash it seems very attractive indeed.
Downside is I really hate buying what looks like a falling knife and so if this isn't near the bottom of course I'll get out with a small loss and try again lower.
Other downside I guess is current transport problems and increased inflation causing margins maybe to contract but taking the chance at under 10.
Takeovers abound in the market right now!! Gamma, Spire, Hiscox, Tate and it looks like more on the way.
I suspect we will try and unearth some at the hotel seminar next Friday (29th), Still space if you'd like to spend the day with me, live markets and some lovely investors.
I picked up some more Gamma - this one has stated there is more than one interested party and I suspect 12-1300p would seal the deal.
As with all bid targets, if it doesn't happen shares will go down but I think not much in this case.
A little bit of profit taking.
Data profit of £1,178, Frp profit is £206.
Bloomsbury as ever puts out a superb statement.
Shares always seem to climb after one of its statements and you can see why.
Elsewhere I am wondering when to take profits in Filtronic. I am up well over £150,000 personally with the website trades in profit by more than £35,000.
There is a lot of interest from the USA and they're crazzzzyyy over there so it could easily go up some more. I think the best bet is a trailing stop so stay in if it carries on up but get you out if profit takers come in. It really is impossible to value now.
Long term holding YU Group announced today its hedging facility with Shell extended for more years which is good news.
Head cheese continues to be frustrated by the share price which looks way too low with a pe of just over 7 and a massive cash pile. At some point it should get a massive re-rating.
Mortgage Advice Bureau had a nice ahead of statement and this should be rated higher.
Kooth, Everplay and MS International have been storming higher.
Knights Group trading range 150-200p has again played out after a strong statement from the company this week.
But actually I haven't taken profit yet as Knights does look very cheap and I wonder if this time it can break out over 200?
For those who may be interested in spreadbetting one day, a quick look at my M and S trade.
My isas were fully invested at the time and I didn't want to sell anything.
How to buy some M and S tax free?
Well, spreadbetting! I went to a Tradenation account.
I wanted 1,500 shares in the company, about £4,700 in value.
All I have to do is press buy for £15 per point (same as 1,500 shares) and it is done.
I bought at 313.85 (shares were 313.5 so I pay slightly extra spread)
Like in an isa every penny it goes up I make £15. At 350p my profit is over £500, stop loss raised to 325p so just a question of how much profit I end up making.
Tradenation tells me how much in pounds I'm buying of M and S under "Notional value".
If I wanted to, I could have a guaranteed stop. I get any dividend in cash 6 weeks before they would arrive in an isa.
No stamp duty to pay but a little to keep it open but only around 80p per weekday, and I only had to put up £300 to make the trade.
I love it personally! I'd suggest you get my spreadbetting book ed 2 for more examples.
Tradenation is a decent place to start as it's so easy to use and tells you the exact amount you are buying if you struggle to figure that out. Link here:

Mentoring
Nice comment from Craig who attended the last online seminar:
"Thank you for a great day on Friday. As a beginner, and half way through reading your Naked Trader book, I was a little apprehensive I would be overwhelmed with the day.
But quite the opposite, great pace and pitched at the right level for everyone online. Seeing Robbie select shares to investigate and even place some buys and top up existing shares has given me the confidence to do it myself.
I would highly recommend to any beginner and I will hopefully join again sometime in the future to top up my knowledge."

I've now finished reading The Trading Game.
Boy, what a gripper!
Definitely makes me glad I never ended up on a trading floor.
The cast of real-life characters there is not a pretty one!
Full time traders seem to be either alcoholics, drug abusers, loners, weirdos, passive-aggressive alpha males, know it alls or just a bit barmy.
And they are all certain of their own brilliance...
Frankly just check any of the discussion forums, all these characters are there..
Anyway, super read and a must buy for anyone interested in trading!

I've enjoyed reading "The Psychology of Money".
It's a best seller deservedly with 19 stories exploring how people think about money.
if you want to better with how you invest, trade or spend money it's a very worthwhile read!

Just a 0.6 spread for the FTSE which is fantastic and the best I've found.
Spreads on FTSE 100 and 250 stocks are really tight, I shop around SB sites when I am about to trade for the best spread and this one keeps coming out the best.
Here's the link if you want to sign up, on this link the lovely Lorenzo will help out if you run into trouble or make a fat finger trade.

I've finished the book on AI - "The Coming Wave".
It's a must read for any investor - I've learned a lot, the writer co-founded Deepmind, one of the world's leading AI cos.
It's fascinating, some of the conclusions are scary and it's good to try and understand it, though in the end he concludes AI will being a lot of benefits. It will also drive some shares down and some up.

Trade tables follow! Trades are current open and recently closed trades. Closed trades feature the closing price and the amount I won or lost. All others are open. Trades get updated a little later than the narrative. Trading costs are ignored, however I also do not add in dividend payments and with the kinds of companies I buy, dividends tend to equal or outweigh costs. Spread rollovers ignored for web purposes. Tables as accurate as poss however a mistake or two can creep in and very occasionally if I forgot I sold or bought something it will be added at a later time. Trades first reported in the diary under Markets every other Thursday afternoon.
