How are your new year resolutions going? Broken already?

I didn't do any of mine from last year.

I didn't start taking drugs, didn't take up smoking or gambling.

Still we might be doing a weekend in Amsterdam, so maybe I should try a dodgy slice of drug cake soon.

I get the feeling through I might go crazy and be very embarrassing.

Being so square that I never took a drug before except breathe in a bit of smoke from an ex girlfriend's weed I'd better take it slowly right?

I've been trying to play scrabble with a supposed AI bot.

I could beat the easy and the medium one.

The "hard" one is a total cheating bastard.

It gives itself first go. Then it always gets the J, X, and Z.

Indeed its first go was "Jinxing" to give it a flying start of 105 pretty much guaranteeing it the win from the word go without having to cheat any further.

It's like playing someone who can cheat and look up 7 letter combinations of as many weird words as they want.

It's totally unfair and it sucks.

Then when I was winning before the end of the game it froze the game.

It got upset as I got 157 from one go, I think it was visualise across two triple word boxes.

It added the points then threw a wobbly and froze up.

So even if it starts losing it can win by cheating.

If AI is just going to cheat at everything, what is to become of us humans.

They will definitely end up killing us and that makes me vaguely glad I'm not so far away from the grim reaper.

A trip to the Apollo Hammersmith to see Inside Number 9

Ok, well not really a trip, A short walk over Hammersmith Bridge.

This was a live mash up of Inside Number 9 favourite episodes and was a joy.

The place was packed and rocked with laughter throughout.

Every show features a different guest celebrity and we got Joe Marler off Traitors who was a big rugby star.

He handled all the lines he was given really well.

We made a terrible decision to exit our seats as the audience applauded the end.

It's Inside Number Nine! Idiots! We should have waited for the extra twist at the end.

As we rushed off, a kindly assistant confided "It's a fake end, there's another ten minutes!"

Back we went and stood in one of the aisles for the last ten!

It's still on tour so if Inside No 9 live comes your way, go and see and don't leave till it actually ends"¦

Looking forwards to those of you starting the new year on the 30th with a day online with me, do join us!

And if you are a total beginner you can join me at a hotel on a weekend day on march 14th where we take it nice and slow!

We should be doing another retreat in 2026.

Places are limited to only ten and you need to apply for one, we chat to you and make sure it's right for you.

Interested? Email me at robbiethetrader@aol.com with "2026 retreats interested". We'll then put you on a list to contact next year and allocate places on a first come first served basis.
People keep asking me which broker to use for their new ISA.

I use mainly Interactive Investor and Barclays and IG.

Interactive Investor is my favourite, I also have my SIPP with them.

Easy to use, and stop losses work well, plus cheap charges.

II has sent me a referral link if you want to try it for an ISA or SIPP.

If you add in more than 10k, you get a free year's subscription with them worth quite a few quid and I get £200 into my account.

Seems like a no brainer here is the link:

If they ask my acc is burnsrobbieburns@aol.com.

I did a podcast with Zeus Capital and Nick Searle who is the most lovely chap.

He even posted a lovely handwritten thank you letter afterwards. Sheer class.

You can hear be blabbing on about how I came to be a trader and suchlike.

Took the credit card tracker with me to Sri Lanka. Used it twice to locate where the cards were!

Put one in your passport wallet and one in your credit card wallet or purse.

Thank me when inevitably something gets lost.

Thanks for the comment on my show about songs you heard it on TV.

Some of you have sent me some songs you liked and heard on TV so it looks like I can do a second one.

It's fun to see what unexpected music you heard and enjoyed.

Looks like from emails Remi Wolfe's "Hello Hello Hello" was a favourite along with the Gustav track.

Lots of people trying side hustles at the moment.

Actually it was side hustles that helped me quit work for good in 2001.

My best was and still is Telecom Plus which trades as Utilities Discount Warehouse.

You can sell energy, sim cards, mobiles, broadband and insurance wfh.

You get commission per customer plus an ongoing commission every time they use
a service for as long as they remain a customer.

No stock needed, all done online. If you're good with people and don't mind a lot of
"no thanks" could work for you.

My young son is doing it and is roaring away with 20 customers already.

You're backed by a billion plus FTSE 250 company and it's rated well by Which Magazine for good deals and excellent customer service.

If you think this could be a good side hustle for you, mail me with "side hustle" at robbiethetrader@aol.com and will send you some info.

Thanks for the feedback from recent events.

Gary:

" The arrangements and agenda were first class, delivered with Elizabeth's charm and efficiency and Robbie's natural charisma. The drill down on all the stock trading ideas
really cemented the knowledge received from the beginners seminar and all
merited the further investigation Robbie and the group undertook.

Having a look at Level 2, DMA and Spreadbetting was very much appreciated.

The day flew by and finished far too soon. I'm convinced I am now a better stock picker and trader as a result of both days with Robbie."

Anne:
My husband and I had a lovely time. We learned so much, the hotel was great and the lunch fantastic. We didn't leave the bar till midnight!

Dave:

"I've been a teacher for the last 30 years and I'm not sure I could have kept a group of pupils so captivated for so long. Humour and in-depth subject knowledge go a long way!

I loved seeing your thought process in deciding which shares to trade and level 2 was also an eye opener."

Phil:

"The seminar was delivered with huge integrity (there was Zero hidden agenda/ulterior motives, it was simple and open with some great laughs thrown in)

As much as I found myself trying to complicate the process and make it more sophisticated in my own tiny brain.

You also took the time to answer "every" question anyone posed. And it was every question. Loads of shares ideas to boot, but more importantly the process to find your own. Brilliant!

Naked Rambling

There's a new petition out which I urge you to electronically sign, link here:

https://c.org/Lhh4pSQPv2

Make it illegal for food outlets to have cash only payments.

The petition says

"I have personally witnessed situations in cafes where individuals, lacking bank accounts but hoping for a bit of warmth and nourishment, were turned away just because they had cash instead of a card. Let's make it law that all food venues in the UK have to accept cash."

Indeed last weekend we were out at an independent cafe in London with friends when this very thing happened.

An older lady (probably mid 70s) had ordered a coffee.

She was handed it by the (quite intimidating) "Barista" and she handed him a fiver.

He refused it. She said she had budgeted her trip into town using cash and this was her coffee money.

"Do I have to give the drink back?" she asked.

"Yes," said the guy. He literally took it back, she was very upset as you can imagine.

We were shocked. This could have been the guy's own grandmother, is this how he would like her to be treated?

Obviously being a human being he should have smiled and said of course and taken the fiver or just given her the bloody coffee!

We stepped in, paid for it by card.

We sat with her, she had come into town for a church Mozart concert and couldn't believe her cash wasn't taken.

She didn't want to pay by card as she had to budget every trip she made from her pension and took the cash out she felt she could afford to spend.

That lovely moment of relaxation she could have had was ruined by this fucker who seemed to have no humanity at all.

I believe all outlets should be forced to accept cash up to £20.

Don't fall for the whining and moaning of cafe owners, having run a cafe it isn't that hard to bank a bit of cash or use it to buy supplies. It's pure laziness.

They're dumb as well, each transaction costs them anyway.

Anyway we had a lovely chat with her and we hope we restored her faith in humanity though I fear she might think twice about having a nice coffee after a concert again.

The usual new year advice is everywhere.

Look if you want to get healthy eat less, exercise more and that's all you need to know!

The rest is BS and people trying to make money off you.

And if you can't be arsed then buy the injections. Your face will soon look 15 years older though.

My resolution for other people is stop wasting their lives on their effing phones watching addictive stupid videos on Tik Tak.

More and more you meet people and you realise they'd rather be at home watching non stop videos than being in the real world.

Their fingers are itching to touch their beloved phones rather than chat and enjoy real company.

Takes about ten minutes usually. Person wants to listen to what you're saying but you can tell they're already switching off and itching to get back on the phone.

Xmas TV was as usual total shite. Except for the finale of Pluribus.

And "Celebrity" Mastermind was so dumbed down you worry for the brain health of the nation. ("What animal makes the sound woof woof"?)

Still, all the good stuff has started up, yeah! Except, um. All a bit underwhelming so far?

Traitors *** BBC1
It's back with a new twist. Not as much fun as the celebrity version and it needs a bit of fast forwarding through the "tasks".

The production crew was wise to tweak things a bit and part of me thinks do I want to waste hours of my life on this.

The Night Manager ** BBC 1
Big disappointment - a heap of tired old cliches replaces the tension and excitement from series one.

Tom Higgleston returns but sadly the best character from series one has gone. Hugh Laurie was a magnificent baddie and the new baddie seems well, a big old cliche.

John Le Carre died since the first series ten years ago. TEN years!! Where did they go.. Have I arranged my funeral yet? Is there time?

So far a thriller by numbers with cliched baddies and crooked government officials. The baddies seem to signal all their bad intentions loudly in the middle of hotel lobbies.

Anyway, seems a lack of tension and the mrs reached for her phone inside 20 minutes. Maybe it'll get better but so far it's a "meh".

The only way to improve it would be for Hugh Laurie to return from the dead. (Maybe he will?)

Top of The Pops **** BBC 4
Ever reliable nostalgia: check out the 1976 edition from Friday!

Presenter David Hamilton wears a cosy pullover, and drools over Pan's People.

The terrible dance group was always out of synch, hilarious. The crowd self consciously moves slightly.

The show resolutely ignores the emergence of punk. Middle of the road reigns supreme as does the classic Queen Number One.

There's crazy long hair and beards everywhere. Love and peace, man during that hot summer.

Millionaire Hot Seat *** ITV
A twist on Millionaire. Looks like the idea is to appeal to the Tik Tak generation which can't concentrate on anything unless it's fast moving.

I can see why, but there are problems. You're not gunning for one person and the format struggles as the amount of money you could win goes down instead of up.

OK for a quick watch but I don't think it really beats standard Millionaire.

Back to the modern world and the tale of the shagging, drug taking arsehole city traders is back on Jan 12th.

Yes Industry returns, such a great series, catch the last 2 series if you didn't see it before!

Talking of arsehole city traders it's time to look at what I've been up to in the markets.

EMAILS: I do beg you not to send me emails asking me for advice on a particular share. It isn't legal for me to give you individual advice and all I do is send you a mail saying that, which wastes a lot of my time and yours too.

****
COPYING TRADES: I can't stop you from copying a trade I made but remember the price may already be a lot higher than I paid indeed I hope it is as buying at good prices is what I do for a living. You may be buying at the top and could easily lose money. Also I can make terrible mistakes and have done in the past. I could also sell before you or before the share tanks. I may still be holding in a year when you sold at a loss. Always do your own research, don't jump in blindly. Market makers are very clever at knowing how to make you pay top dollar and then push you out at a loss. This site is about sensible investment and learning how to trade sensibly and is not a tipping site. Beware. Never push buy on anything till you've done proper research and got yourself a sensible price.

Markets

My new year market resolution is to take high risk punts on tiny small caps.

And if they go down, double down and keep buying more till I run out of money!

I know I can't sell them if they go down as no-one wants them off me, but still it's a laugh and you never know!

A good start for shares in 2026 and the Xmas rally still going, see further down.

Though you can't help thinking with this diabolical government in charge, how much further can we go?

I switch off Starmer the moment he starts talking. And still 3 years or more to come!

I've bought some Boku.

First off, this one isn't cheap. But I've decided to pay up on what looks like great prospects.

It's just started a share buyback programme claiming its shares are undervalued.

This payments outfit would be worth a lot higher with a US style valuation and has a decent cash pile.

However, it is high risk. A trading statement is due shortly and if there is any weakness it will get punished.

But if forecasts are right for profit and net cash, this one should have a pretty good year.

Boku came up at the seminar on my dash for cash screen on Sharescope, go to home page and scroll down to find it, comes up with good winners.

You can try for free for a month.

https://www.sharescope.co.uk/nakedtrader
Next 15 is one I made a good few quid out of a few months ago and it might be time to get in again.

It sits at just over 7x with a dividend of near 5pc.

Its problem is it has some debt, not that bad, but it's addressing that by selling off some of its non core businesses.

It's already sold off one.

It's basically a company in transition after a profits warning early last year, and if it can pull it off, there is some very good upside with it being priced so low.

Any positive statements and there could be a nice re-rating.

Downside is the warnings continue and they can't turn it around - but for now signs are positive.

The defence sector has been oversold. I topped up with some Cohort which I took profits on a while back but it's time to ne back in.

I also bought some of the big dog of the UK defence world, BAE Systems.

I really wish I didn't have to, and would prefer a peaceful world of course.

But, given Shitface Putin isn't exactly going to lie down, I'm afraid some defence exposure is needed for a portfolio.

BAE is on the up today actually after Trump claimed he would increase defence spending by 50pc.

This could also bode well for MS International but I have quite a few of those already, nearly quadrupled on those so far.

Marks and Sparks looks like a core holding and I bought more recently.

Its report today showed food is doing really well, clothes not so much.

But you could easily see the shares heading back to 400p and this looks a lovely holding for longer-term benefits in an isa.

Softcat looks promising after a spell in the doldrums and I have bought some. We chatted about this one at the hotel seminar.

This one has come back all the way from 1900 to 1400 and looks ripe for some nice upside.

The seller of IT infrastructure products has a whole pile of cash and has decided its share price is too low.

And today it's decided on a massive share buyback programme using some of its cash which should see the shares rising nicely for a bit.

Profits have risen quite a lot in the portfolio over the last few weeks, I did take some profits before Xmas but tempted to hold for now.

Some very good recent gainers include Cordiant, Tristel, Elixir, Knights and DATA.

Special mention for Eurowag which has really steamed ahead with a lot of buyers in there so though very tempting to bag giant profits on that one will try and stay for more.

So, the Xmas rally did play out quite nicely but as I mentioned a lot at the seminars, you did need a wide stop loss to ensure you weren't stopped out on volatile days.

The rally carried on into January and it is kind of still going.

I'm sitting on some nice profits especially on the Dow Jones, where I did a quite small bet but even that is paying off.

A wide stop was needed because it was quite volatile but I've started to push stops up nearer the current price because I guess I don't mind banking profits soon.

But if it carries on going hopefully I can stay with it.

For US indicies would suggest using the TN guaranteed stop so you know exactly for sure what you could lose if it goes wrong.

Nice comment from Craig who attended the last online seminar:

"Thank you for a great day on Friday. As a beginner, and half way through reading your Naked Trader book, I was a little apprehensive I would be overwhelmed with the day.

But quite the opposite, great pace and pitched at the right level for everyone online. Seeing Robbie select shares to investigate and even place some buys and top up existing shares has given me the confidence to do it myself.

I would highly recommend to any beginner and I will hopefully join again sometime in the future to top up my knowledge."

I've now finished reading The Trading Game.

Boy, what a gripper!

Definitely makes me glad I never ended up on a trading floor.

The cast of real-life characters there is not a pretty one!

Full time traders seem to be either alcoholics, drug abusers, loners, weirdos, passive-aggressive alpha males, know it alls or just a bit barmy.

And they are all certain of their own brilliance...

Frankly just check any of the discussion forums, all these characters are there..

Anyway, super read and a must buy for anyone interested in trading!

I've enjoyed reading "The Psychology of Money".

It's a best seller deservedly with 19 stories exploring how people think about money.

if you want to better with how you invest, trade or spend money it's a very worthwhile read!

Spreadbetting

I discovered a SB firm that does just 0.6 on the FTSE and tight spreads on 100 and 250 shares, also handy right now if you are shorting given the such tight spread

Just a 0.6 spread for the FTSE which is fantastic and the best I've found.

Spreads on FTSE 100 and 250 stocks are really tight, I shop around SB sites when I am about to trade for the best spread and this one keeps coming out the best.

Here's the link if you want to sign up, on this link the lovely Lorenzo will help out if you run into trouble or make a fat finger trade.

I've finished the book on AI - "The Coming Wave".

It's a must read for any investor - I've learned a lot, the writer co-founded Deepmind, one of the world's leading AI cos.

It's fascinating, some of the conclusions are scary and it's good to try and understand it, though in the end he concludes AI will being a lot of benefits. It will also drive some shares down and some up.

Buy and read! Amazon link: https://amzn.to/46v2hcg

One or two of you asked about how we got our car back after it was stolen, we used apple airtags, hide them in your car or under your bike seat and get your car or bike back, amazing.

I love companies with decent cash piles and I've developed a screen for shares with cash with Sharepad to go with my new book.

The screen goes with one of my strategies from the new book "Dash for Cash".

The idea is it picks up sensible shares with a cash pile for further examination.

I don't mean it to be "just buy any share on the screen." My idea is it's a start for further research as just because a company has a cash pile doesn't necessarily mean it's a great company.

If you don't have Sharepad you can try a free trial using the link below, if you think it is useful after the trial you get a decent discount on the link and can pay monthly if you want.

Trade tables follow! Trades are current open and recently closed trades. Closed trades feature the closing price and the amount I won or lost. All others are open. Trades get updated a little later than the narrative. Trading costs are ignored, however I also do not add in dividend payments and with the kinds of companies I buy, dividends tend to equal or outweigh costs. Spread rollovers ignored for web purposes. Tables as accurate as poss however a mistake or two can creep in and very occasionally if I forgot I sold or bought something it will be added at a later time. Trades first reported in the diary under Markets every other Thursday afternoon.
