SEPTEMBER 26, 2012

Rebel with a cause

*** Next seminar now October 15th. (Those of you who came to the last seminar if you didn't get the trading plan sheet and notes from the day let me know though pretty certain I mailed you all!)

I don't normally hold another one till late November or early December but I had so many mails from people wanting one in October because you could not make September....more details below but if you couldn't make September's event here is your chance, mail me at robbiethetrader@aol.com with "October seminar interested" in the subject line. Early bird discount is on offer! (But not for much llonger!!) ****

Don't get too excited but the Naked Trader Diary 2013 is available for pre-order and should be ready to send out in about 3 weeks.

And it's only about a tenner. A bargain or what?

Those of you coming to the seminar you don't need to pre-order it as I should have the very first ones off the press for you available on the day! Yes, you lucky seminar delegates should be the first to get it!

What's in it? Well, I hope everything a naked trader could want!

All the hot dates for 2013, like ex dividend dates, likely company reporting dates, sporting events, and even an arrow for each day telling you whether that day has been strong or not in the past.

There is also my thought of the week for each week of the year, and some looks at companies reporting on particular weeks.

I know many think desk diaries should be consigned to history and we should be online with our diaries but to me there is nothing like a lovely paper diary sitting on the desk.

I hope if you buy it you will enjoy having it on your desk during 2013... I guess I really designed it for myself to have on my desk.

Oh and there are fun bits too of course, and lots of cartoons!

And in a bit of feeble marketing, it would obviously make a great gift for your trading buddies, so don't buy one, buy ten!

Did that work for you? My publisher should be pleased with that - I owe them one considering I refuse all invites to speak and promote my books at investor conferences!

If you'd like to pre-order it The Naked Trader Diary 2013 you can just click this link here:

I really wouldn't call myself an Alpha male. They're more "in charge" types with big voices, you know the ones.

However I did become one briefly at the health club.

Myself and Christopher went for a swim and arrived at the pool at half six on a weekend.

Previously I'd had arguments with the manager but he had eventually ruled all kids had to be out by 7.30.

As we arrived in the pool we were stopped. "Sorry," says man by pool. "I'm just chucking out all these children so I can't let you in..."

I noticed a bunch of kids and their parents looking puzzled standing by the pool.

I took charge. Yes, the new Alpha me. I'm not going to let some pleb tell me what to do!! I am WAY too important for that!!!

"I'm sorry," I said. "I'm going into the pool right now with my child. The rule is 7.30. The head cheese mailed me."

"No it's not," he said. "It's about now..."

"I'm not arguing with you, we're going in," I replied. "If you want us out then you will have to lift us up and carry us out of the club."

I turned to the other parents. "Everyone in!" I shouted. "Go on jump in, there are 20 of us and 2 of them, what are they going to do about in, in you go.... members' power!"

And with that we jumped in, and the rest all followed.

Surly bloke glared at all of us. We all carried on enjoying ourselves.

By the way the pool is massive and there was hardly anyone else there.

Surly guy got onto his walkie talkie. A lady manager appeared and I could see him pointing at me.

I was quite in the mood for a standoff. I was intending to tell her we would leave, however I would want my membership terminated there and then.

However to be fair to her she decided to retreat. Sometimes you need to decide you are beaten.

We all swam happily for half an hour. Probably just as well I didn't need rescuing during this time as I suspect surly guy might have turned a blind eye. "Sorry.. just didn't see him...."

If you believe in the right of something sometimes you have to stand up for it. Unlike the useless miserable Nick Clegg...

So Nick Clegg walks into a bank to cash a cheque.

Cashier: "Could you please show me your ID?"

Clegg: " I didn't bring my ID with me as I didn't think there was any need to. I am Nick Clegg, the Deputy Prime Minister!!!"

Cashier: "I'm sorry, but with all the regulations, monitoring, of the banks because of impostors and forgers, etc. I must insist on proof of identity."

Clegg: "Just ask anyone here at the bank who I am and they will tell you. Everybody knows who I am."

Cashier: "Perhaps there's another way: One day Colin Montgomery came into the bank without ID. To prove he was Colin Montgomery he pulled out his putting iron and made a beautiful shot across the bank into a cup. With that particular shot we knew him to be Colin Montgomery and cashed his cheque.

"Another time, Andy Murray came in without ID. He pulled out his tennis racquet and made a fabulous shot where the tennis ball landed in my cup. With that spectacular aim we cashed his cheque..

"So sir, what can you do to prove that it is you,and only you, as the Deputy Prime Minister?"

Clegg stood there thinking and finally says "Honestly, I can't think of a single thing I'm good at."

Cashier: "Will that be large or small notes, Deputy Prime Minister?"

We went to Westfield shopping centre to see a movie - it was heaving, recession, what recession, at least in London.

We saw the movie Hope Springs. I like Meryl Streep, she is always good.

It's about a couple who go to therapy to revive a flagging marriage. It's not bad.. but... it doesn't quite seem to know whether it's going for laughs trying to make more serious points.

It should have gone all out for laughs. Could have been a cracker if it had otherwise it's a so so probably best saved for a look when it comes out on DVD.

Coming out of the movie at 11pm it was amazing to see queues and queues of blokes all over the place.

All in their early 20s .... Some new club, we wondered? Was a late night show about to start?

Then we twigged .. yes of course.. the new Apple Iphone.. these were people ready to queue overnight.... for a new version of the phone!

They were almost exclusively young blokes, and when you look at their faces there was only one reason for them to be queueing up overnight.

This is their DRUG. Yes they are high!! High in a anticipation of their latest hit.

There must be a comedown at some point when they realise they got conned into £700 for their hit.

After a couple of days playing with their new features which are no big deal maybe they wonder: "Oooh when is the next version coming out?"

No women. They are way too smart to fall for it.

Apple doesn't care about you guys. It just loves MAKING MONEY out of you. Let's not even go into how the products are made in China.

Apple will continue bringing out new versions of all its things all the time to take your cash.. don't you see? No because you are in Luuurrvvee with Apple!!

Once they get the new toy maybe they all enjoy texting, facebooking and twittering on it for a few days. But then they might just ask themselves, do I have any REAL friends? (That's the comedown till the next one)

Do I phone, call or communicate properly with anyone anymore?

Has new technology made fools of us all? Are these devices designed to make communication quicker and easier actually doing the opposite?

Have we stopped really talking to each other and look into our tiny screens instead, hoping for our next text or Facebook update?

The rise and rise of the automatic checkout tills at supermarkets tell all. Some people genuinely seem to prefer to scan their own stuff in front of a machine than talk to a real person.

They will actually do the work of a checkout assistant and not even get paid for it. Doh! Soon it won't be possible for you to get service anymore.

I got some service at a small Waitrose today. However a 3 for 2 offer on fruit confused the till lady. She called in her minor boss. He was confused too. He offered a bag of free plums. Then the big boss was called for.

He ruled in the end I could have 3 for 2. But in all that time not one of them addressed me once. Or even looked at me or even tried to establish any kind of relationship.

I guess they would have been far more comfortable if we could have done the whole thing on text message, staring into our phone rather than looking at each other.

I got home and wished I'd taken the free plums.. the peaches were horrible!

The papers report comedian Justin Lee Collins "made his girfriend sleep facing him, tell him about her sexual experiences and throw away DVDs featuring actors she fancied as part of domestic abuse".

Could have been worse domestic abuse. He could have instead made her watch his own "comedy" shows.

Thanks a lot for the continued lovely feedback on the seminar. Tempting to print all of it but I'll resist....

I'm glad you are all happy with the day and using the timing tricks I showed you live, I really hope you stick by the trading plans and use all the methods of discipline I taught you..
If you couldn't make September's seminar the next one is coming up real soon...on Monday October 15th.

if you are interested in a seat mail me at robbiethetrader@aol.com for details with "October seminar interested" in the subject line.

And the good news is for a short time there is a decent early bookers discount! Not for much longer though, get it while it's there....

Beginners and improvers welcome! Come and spend the day with me, the markets and some lovely people - and of course, lunch!

If you mail me I will then send you details and a full agenda of what is covered. Also more details below somewhere.

My seminars are designed for beginners, dabblers and improvers and deals with everything from how to look for winners, how to research, spreadbetting, level 2 use how to time trades and short, how to use advfn properly and run your portfolio without having to spend money on systems and tipsters.. and tons more.

A lot of the day comes directly from the live markets and I show you many of the tricks I use to get good prices live. And there might even be the odd live trade or 2!

Follow Up Seminars

A follow up with me will be on Friday November 16th at Heathrow. This is for those who've been to a basic seminar with me but now want to improve. So we spend a day of live markets watching level 2, order books as well as researching new shares, coming up with new ideas for longs and shorts, and well, who knows what might happen. I love these days and it usually throws up some new ideas.

Sunday December 9th is the date for another technical analysis seminar with Susan who for many years has made decent money full time by using simple TA. She will teach you all about it in an easy and simple way to help improve buy and sell decisions.

If you're interested in either or both dates, email me at robbiethetrader@aol.com with "follow up", or "TA interested" or "both interested".

Lots of lovely feedback on the last event including this from Janet: "Thank you so much for what was a terrific 12 hour marathon on your part. I feel like I have been through a 12 hour therapy session that has given me back some confidence. I now feel I can indeed make trading work for me, after a few years of trying and testing and not quite comprehending and co-ordinating the right ingredients. The last late session researching various companies was a real help."

And Colin: "Highlights of the day for me were Level 2 and going through the selection process to choose shares. I have followed advice from your book in the past, and it really has worked for me before, but even though I understood the concept of Level 2 I never quite saw the real benefits of it. Two minutes into your explanation of how you use it I was kicking myself. I could not believe that I had done all my trades without it! Watching you check some shares was very useful, especially the speed which you can eliminate or shortlist the numerous possibilities out there. Just watching you doing it showed me how much time I had been wasting doing the same thing but by a much more torturous process."

* The all new edition of my book Naked Trader 3 is out now !!!

Lots of new strategies including my top 20, lots more mistakes to avoid, loads of new trader tales, cartoons and a bit of fun too.

I hope you all enjoy it - and can tell I put a lot of effort into it and I really hope if it just stops one person from making the mistakes I did it will be worthwhile.

Indeed I hope the book is worth it even if you read about other people's stories, it is amazing how so many make exactly the same mistakes.

Anyhow if you buy it I hope you enjoy it! Click here:

I read an excellent stock market thriller on holiday,

"The Fear Index" by Robert Harris.

A maths genius joins a hedge fund and together they create a monster trading robot giving it billions to play with.

The robot starts to short everything and starts to cause massive market crashes. Then takes on a mind of its own.

Plenty of excellent page turning stuff here, if you are a trader or investor a lot of it will ring true with the robots almost already in charge of some shares!

There's tons of drama and action and I couldn't put it down though it helps as it is a thriller about the markets!

If you're into the markets you'll love it.. here's an order link to the book:

Enjoy the read!!

An interesting email from a reader. The thrust of it was he was going to buy a share after doing a lot of research but then it went up 12% and he hadn't bought it yet. So he felt angry.
How does he stop/halt the feelings of anger?
Well, you have to take the emotion out of trading. Which isn't easy.
I suggested he should read this book.. by Jason Zweig
http://books.global-investor.com/books/256158.htm?ginPtrCode=10453
This is the one to read on psychology. Great read.

Spreadbetting firm Tradefair Spreads has upped its offer exclusively to Naked Trader readers to a £100 credit. This offer is exclusive to me and not available anywhere else...
I've been using them for a few weeks to check that I'm happy with the service. As you know I don't take ads or allow referrals on the site unless it's a company I've used and I feel confident about.
What I like about it is it's easy to use, spreads are surprisingly tight on the smaller companies and interestingly an automated stop loss is applied to each trade - so beginners know what their max loss is from the outset.
Anyway they now offer a £100 credit as long as you deposit £100. You get the credit after you placed 5 trades (Terms and conditions apply)
If you'd like to apply for an account with Tradefair Spreads and get the freebie click this link:

I use IG Index for betting on the very small companies, the only spreadbet firm I can find that does the smaller ones making it possible to trade AIM cos tax free.

Many of you enjoy the cheap advfn toplists bronze deal through me as do many of you with the cheap level 2. However many of you say you want a half-way house to include real-time share prices always on.
So I'm pleased to announce I've managed to seal a new deal with Advfn for its "Silver" service - that's always on real-time share prices for a good saving (Bronze toplists etc are included in this).
The deal is via me you can save £30 for your first year by paying just £145 inc vat via me instead of £173.71
Just mail me for full details if you'd like it with "silver" in the subject line.

They've just re-published "The Zulu Principle" by Jim Slater who's written a 2008 update at the beginning.
This is a brilliant classic book. Reading this is a real pleasure and it was a great idea to republish.
Jim believes like I do the best gains can come from smaller stocks and in an easy to read style takes you through how to evaluate smaller companies that are about to become bigger ones - he uses some excellent examples.
Really this is a must read for all more longer-term investors or anyone looking to grow their money... a number of you have also written to me about this book and praising it.
Here is the link to buy it:
http://books.global-investor.com/books/167207.htm?ginPtrCode=10453
Here's a very topical one: The Little Book of Bull Moves in Bear Markets by Peter Schiff.
The book is all about how to keep portfolios up in a down market. He focusses a lot on how to play commodities and win with some sensible advice especially on natural resources and precious metals. He is very much a realist and there is no rubbish here: some straight talking and some interesting strategies.
Everyone who invests should think seriously about keeping portfolios up in bad times so this book should be read.
Well worth picking up at this link:

Several people have asked me for a recommendation on a book which shows how to study accounts in a reasonably easy way. The one I like the most is http://books.global-investor.com/books/15717.htm?ginPtrCode=10453 by Robert Leach. Ten crunch questions to ask before buying any company.
It' s a decent easy-to-read book with several key chapters and it's highly recommended. It's one I keep and dip into from time to time. To order, click this link... http://books.global-investor.com/books/15717.htm?ginPtrCode=10453
The best book on charting and easiest read on the subject is http://books.global-investor.com/books/15618.htm?ginPtrCode=10453 by Alistair Blair. Click here -> http://books.global-investor.com/books/15618.htm?ginPtrCode=10453
Another good one is the second edition of http://books.global-investor.com/books/23792.htm?ginPtrCode=10453 by Peter Temple. Included in this one is how to use spreadbetting, CFD's warrants and trackers to reduce risk. And there are some decent trading strategies too.
This is an excellent book for new investors and also experienced ones. It explains all the things you may not be sure about in the markets and will explain the tools that are there. Naked Trader Seminar Latest News

**** BOOKING FOR MONDAY OCTOBER 15TH OPEN

Fancy spending a day with me, learning all the ways I have learned over the years to find good shares and play the markets? Well, you can at one of my seminars!
Booking is open for the Naked Trader seminar on Oct 15th

Price is £590 plus vat. That includes three course lunch, coffees, snacks etc. There is currently a decent early bookers discount off that price - mail for details!
The seminar is mainly aimed at beginners and dabblers though improvers are welcome too.
Topics covered using live market feeds all day include: Market psychology, level 2 - a simple guide to how to use it for better timing; how to value companies; finding companies that are about to rise. I will also cover techniques for handling events such as the recent meltdown and volatility.
Spreadbetting: How to use it to gain an edge and go short. Market makers - how they work and how to beat them; how to stop losing money and make it instead and plenty more.
How to plan trade entries and exits - how to research companies and understand reports, plus all those niggly questions you always wanted to ask. How to set stop losses and targets. Charts and how to use them.
Also covered: Market maker tricks: How to spot tree shakes and use them in your favour, How to tell when NOT to buy a share. I use live ADVFN all day with lots of level 2 and looks at all kind of live market data.
The idea behind the seminar is SIMPLICITY. I don't use jargon or fancy words - everything is in PLAIN ENGLISH! No question is too stupid and the event is held in a friendly relaxed and supportive environment.
The idea is you will come away from the event I hope a wise and better investor with lots of new ideas. I try and translate complex topics into easy bite size pieces. I also aim for it to be entertaining as well as instructive.
If you are interested please e-mail me at robbiethetrader@aol.com with "October seminar interested" in the subject line and I will send you full details of the event including comments from those who have come to previous seminars and you can then decide whether you would like to come. See you there!
One seminar attendee Clare wanted to write a testimonial about her experiences at the seminar which follows now!
"I've just come back buzzing from one of Robbie's seminars. What a day! He's just brilliant, and manages to pack an awful lot into one day, and with his enthusiastic and humorous delivery the day just flies by. There are no gimmicks, no sell, no "˜get-rich-quick' promises, just his own solid, sound approach which he has learnt over the years and which works.
He shows you how to minimise the risks and maximise the profits and points out the banana skins on the way. Where the seminar really comes into its own is when he teaches using live level 2. Hearing him talk through his thought processes and reasoning is invaluable, and really brings home everything from the book. He has endless patience answering peoples' questions, and really seems to care that everybody understands.
On top of that, you meet some really nice like minded people and swap e mail addresses, you're plied with
chocolates and coffee all day, have a great lunch and spend the evening getting tiddled with Robbie in the
bar afterwards! You might even get to see the amazing crocodile boots . . . .
Don't worry about the cost, it's easily worth it, and you'll soon make it back with your new-found investment skills, and in what you're no longer losing. If you're thinking of going along to his next seminar, whether you're a novice or an experienced trader, don't hesitate ""just go!
Thanks Clare, did you want the tenner in cash, or will a cheque do?

£100 Tradefair offer

I've started using Tradefair for spreadbetting - I like the auto generated stop losses which help to maintain discipline and that's good for beginners I think. And exclusively for Naked Trader readers they upped the offer to £100 credit.
So there's now a £100 credit on offer for anyone opening an account via me. You get that after 5 spreadbets (terms and conditions apply)

Naked Rambling

I could easily write a book on the Lib Dems, I could also easily rant on here for ages about them.

But, look you have heard all this from me before. Their policies are almost the exact opposite of what we should be doing to improve things. But I'll keep it brief.

If I wanted to keep it very brief I could argue that if the Lib Dems were the Government on their own we would be like Greece within 2 years.

Why? It would be similar to a school led by all the supply teachers. The school would rapidly be overun by the pupils as they realised they could get away with anything.

To be as fair as I can I think they are well meaning. It's just that being well meaning doesn't mean you are right.

Their incessant efforts to "make the rich pay more" are disastrous. I can see the point of tackling tax free havens but not people earning £48,000. In London it is hard to live off that.

They don't realise cutting taxes for all would be a game changer for the good.

Trying to tax people who have expensive houses is silly. They bought the houses with money that has already been taxed. And in London many might have bought their house for £50,000 years ago and it is not their fault their houses are now valued at silly prices.

Many might even be on the breadline! How could they pay another tax? And can you imagine how expensive it would be to implement? Probably cost more than any gains!

Worse is taking away benefits for pensioners like bus passes from those deemed "Too rich". Even one of the major Lib Dems agreed there was no money to be made because the costs of admin would outweigh the benefits.

Just because a pensioner might have £100,000 in the bank does not make him rich. If he needs to pay for private care how long do you think that money would last. Not very long at all.

Best thing really is to switch off the telly when the supply teachers are on the TV.

Oh no, the last ever episode of the Sopranos tonight on Sky Atlantic, it's been fabulous watching the whole series every week over the last couple of years.

We had an idea last week it might be the last given a vast number of main characters were killed off.

Brilliant writing and acting all the way through the best series ever. And if you never saw it what are you waiting for, go get the box set and enjoy!

Homeland deservedly won Best Drama award at the Emmies. Roll on the next series.

Downton Abbey was up for 16 awards but only got one. Fair enough, it's entertaining but not that great!

A kind of posh EastEnders is how it seems to be now with ludicrous plotlines appearing from nowhere...

But the main headline is: BATES' HAIR!!!

How did he manage to get a hair transplant and dye in prison? He definitely didn't have that much hair in the last series and it definitely wasn't that colour either...

Yes, that murdering swine Bates has obviously been trading fags in jail for a hair makeover. Quite amazing his amour never noticed it.

Poor old M lud has been persuaded by a share pusher to buy a dud - he bought the equivalent of Woolworths or Yell (both badges of honour for any new investors),

Smug Peter Jones got his comeuppance in Dragons Den this week. Far too quickly he turned down a great investment in a cooking sauce.

In his usual patronising way he told the women behind the sauce that pretty much he knew the business and that they didn't stand a chance of making any money.

The next dragon probed a bit further to discover the women had a massive order for the sauces. And soon the other dragons were fighting over making an offer.

The look on Duncan's face told the whole story of how much he really hates Peter.

But have you noticed how little the Dragons are digging into their pockets this series? I remember the days long ago when you'd get at least a couple of £100,000 offers. Now, you're lucky to get one person getting £50,000 an episode now. Hard times eh?

The spreadbetting firm I use for sports betting is here:
Via this link Open a Sporting Index account and there's £100 cash offer - please check terms and conditions which apply.

http://www.sportingindex.com/?tpid=6755
Do remember if you do bet you ought to treat sports spreadbetting as entertainment - and expect to lose! Also with spreadbetting work out what your max loss could be and make sure you can afford it! In other words if you say backed the favourite at 15 for a fiver and they come nowhere your max loss is £75.

posting dire photos of them doing things they shouldn't are now grown up and

Nice to think I am not the only unsociable grump to not want to follow the

I am in the states just now and feel the Starbucks asking name thing is just
more marketing bollocks to get them noticed. If they just speeded up the

Thanks Anne,
well of course I agree, it's nearly all bollocks!

Duane writes:
Wanted to say a big thank you to you and Mrs NT for an amazing day of learning and fun at your seminar.

The way you explained the share trading from start to finish was understandable and really interesting, well worth the seminar fee!
It was great to hear such down to earth and honest assessment from a successful trader like yourself. The way you explained everything was good revision from your book and gave further insight into successful share trading.

I particularly liked your live trades and going through your accounts when you gave snippets of why you invested in certain shares and why you kept/dumped them. Also helpful was the way you searched for prospective shares and within minutes discounted them or put them on a short list for further examination and correct entry points. Amazing!
You could really tell that you loved doing what you do and your energy levels to keep going till 10pm was well....... I had to leave at 9pm I was shattered!

Thanks again Robbie I am keen to put into practice what you have taught me. Even though you make squillions from your trades and I am sure don't need to do the seminars for financial gain, but please keep doing those seminars for newbies like me!

Thanks Duane! Don't expect to be doing them foreever but very rewarding for me to help people so expect to carry on for a while longer.

If you are reading this, you are perhaps considering going on one of Robbie's Seminars. You maybe asking yourself (like I did) the testimonials are all well and good but once the euphoria and excitement of attending a Seminar has died down ..... and I am back home in my normal routine and faced with the "graft" of putting it all into practice... will I become a better trader and be financially better off?
Let me tell you that in my case it certainly has!
Book your place pretty sharpish....... is what I say !

Thanks Gabriel!

Fantastic seminar.

I have always been sceptical of the public testaments you see on web sites
saying how great an event was. Now I'm one of those people!. I
genuinely believe that the tips and techniques as well as the overall
approach you demonstrated will radically improve my trading performance

Thanks Terry, well all the testaments are real but know what you mean and glad you feel it was worth it!
Stephen writes:
I read your book and did the course - and I wasn't sure if I'd recoup the cost, it's been 2 years and I've made £38k + saved a loss transferring a Jupiter ISA heavily invested in BP. I can't tell you how important this is or how grateful I am. That's just me, who knows how much people have made with your help and saved by not making mistakes. I wanted to get into shares as they recovered after the crunch, but I assumed I had to put a large amount in one company I thought would make a big jump.
But what happens when you make £1m on the website, will you still do courses? I don't know how you do your ISA and SIPP investments, write the website, books, courses and answer e-mails. But please don't give it up. Couldn't you do the courses and have a standing website which gets updated with your trades say once a month so people can see what you do..

Stephen thanks so much for such a nice mail and much appreciated! Dunno about the future, I feel like I'm getting jaded. It's possible I might just reduce it all at some point to twice a month after going weekly - that would probably help. The other problem is other people's angst is getting to me and the email workload becoming overwhelming. I think after ten years it might be time for me to quit. Anyway good luck with your trades and hope you make a lot more.

Markets

Do you want to know why the Dow sank 100 points yesterday?

Easy, guess who it was who pressed the starting bell? Go on guess, you will never believe it!

Go on, who has the reverse of the Midas Touch?

Yes... our very own ex PM Gordon Brown!!

No wonder, as everything he touches turns to... well whatever the opposite of gold is...

Come to think of it let's not mention gold and Gordon Brown at the same time.

If he hadn't sold our gold at rock bottom and we could sell it now, can you imagine? What he did was like selling Apple shares in 1998 ! Anyway before I start on a rant let me shut up...

The market in general has been fine unless you're in the really crazy volatile mining/banking sector... And it still struggles to get through 5920 for now - so the ftse downbet I got on live at 5904 at the last seminar still holds well. Though much more downside and I think I will bank it!

Markets are unhappy today but my guess is the current downturn won't last long (cue the great crash of late September 2012)

Another decent week with more great gains

I've bought some BATM - (BVC).

An interesting one. It's been on a shortlist for months. Sitting there and I've patiently eyed it up from time to time waiting for some kind of upward movement on volume.

And the time has come for me to delve in and I have indeed bought quite a few, a lot in fact averaging around 15.5 . Though for the website as usual I'm putting in the smallest trade I made.

Perhaps it is now time for this previously very disappointing company to shine. It's just got a dual listing on the Tel Aviv stock market. It's just broken into profit and sits on a shedload of cash.

So far nothing to get excited about. However... it just might be on the turn as a recovery play with words like "growth" and "transitional" being bandied about by the head cheese.

Right now the company has got something to prove. However the best time to get into a recovery play is.. well, erm, before it recovers. And this might possibly end up a doubler. Downside? Well it has got to this sort of price before and then gone back down. I'm giving it another chance.

And I have bought some Sepura (SEPU)

Those of you who read Spreadbet mag know I bought these already in the 71p area though I didn't have time to cover that here. However I have bought a fresh batch this week at 76.5.

I like this one, unless the market really tanks there could be considerable upside though patience will be needed but I have plenty of that!

Sepura in particular could break through in America, if it does the sky is the limit. It seems like a well-run decent company that could perhaps head up to the 100 mark from here and seems in the middle of breaking out of its previous range. Looks good!

Darn it and blast it! As those of you who came to the seminar know I was planning on a massive short on Dominos after its statement today. Really massive and was hoping for £100 a point at 570-580.

I did manage to get a palty short on at 562 yesterday to be on the safe side then I pondered why not just go for it now and stick on the massive short before the statement today?

No, I told myself they are going to say the Olympics were great and the price will rise early doors then I can put the big short on!

How wrong I was! If I had done what I should have done I would be up 4 grand. Anyway, there is a chance they might rise again. So I am watching to see if it goes up a bit for another short. Perhaps at 540-560 there is still a chance of a short profit.

By the way I should add why short what is actually a good business? Well, because it is too highly rated for a company that is ex big growth and it is all in the price.

I took profits this morning on the last of the website Porvair. I did have 10,000 shares in reality left and I sold 5,000 of them today at 146, but I've left the final 5,000 shares in my ISA longer term.

A great statement today but having bought at 60 and the price now pushing 150 I couldn't quite resist the urge to bank some of the profit - it it goes down much I may buy back.

Anyhow for website purposes I am banking the last of it and that's a profit of £4,300.

I've taken profits on Fenr as it couldn't break the 400 mark after getting through it previously to bank a profit of £727. No doubt it will form another trading range.

Betfair has gone at 747 for a profit of £180. It was always only a small trade and there are just too many sellers around at 750-770 for now for it to go much higher.

Now the big one. It's a brilliant problem to have but how much of the massive SportingBet profits I have should I bank? Or should I stay with it? Or should I just bank it all?

SportingBet is now in the bid spotlight with William Hill interested.

Hard to know in these situations whether to take profits or sit tight, If the bid goes through or rival bidders emerge it could go up to 65-70p. However if the interest dies off then we are probably back to 35, which makes it somewhat of a gamble.

The other problem is I have absolute shedloads of SportingBet. Seriously more than you can comfortably imagine which means I really think I had to bank at least part profits here.

So I have indeed parted with some and I expect to hold the rest and take a chance the bid will go through. Hills has to put up or shut up by close of play on Oct 16th. So not too long to wait!

A bid for SportingBet did fall through before but I reckon the odds of it going through this time are about 65-35 which the current market price of 51ish probably tells the story.

Anyhow to try and mirror my actions I've sold half the website holding for a profit of £3,600. The other site holding has a paper profit of £6,000.

I suppose weighing up this one is the old fear emotion. Fear of missing out on a bigger profit and fear of missing out on a profit at all ! Hard one.

Oh and finally Playtech couldn't make it past 400 so the final SB has gone for a profit of £560.

Okay that is total profits banked for the site of a very tasty £9,367

Portfolio Highlights

Not an awful lot to report, everything stays were it is, or pushes on up.

Recent buy Gresham Computing does nicely and seems to have cracked 70p. Really it's a wait and see on any contract news. If they can get a decent contract the share price will zoom up.

It's one of those companies that sits there doing nothing for ages and one morning you wake up and it has soared on news. It usually happens when one least expects it! Any contract news would lead to a big re-rating.

Apr has pushed nicely up through the 800 mark, 900 next? Probably take half profits around there.

Recent buy Lavendon pushes up a bit and looks promising today - lots of keen buyers today, no idea why but no complaints.

Filtronic reported everything is on track and a broker upped its target to 58p. There is some temptation to bag a part profit but it seems well supported. My two media plays Creston and Chime both perform very well. Profits of over £3,000 in Creston and much more in Chime...in fact Chime has soared in the last week on good volumes, maybe the bid from WPP is on its way! Still in this from 50p so a nice times four and a great profit on the ones bought more recently in the 140s and the spreadbet. Abcam short goes quite well if it can hold under the 400.

Kentz went ex dividend today. 440 looks a problem area now and oil services are unhappy today. Nichols continues to slowly rise day by day and profits are now rolling in nicely... I'm hopeful of a bid at around the tenner mark. It tries to push 800p today.
Telecom Plus seems to be gaining traction again after a quiet spell. But it tends to do that, pleateaus for ages and then gets rerated. Website profits of well over £100,000 and personal profits of nearly £300,000. Add in the dividends and the income has been terrific. Coastal is off a bit on profit taking today but another decent drill statement makes me happy to stay in. Nearly trebled now.
Costain has leapt up nicely and in a decent profit now on the various trades in it. I reckon it should really be nearer 300 and maybe I will get there! It needs to tackle 250 to get higher.

Vectura keeps reporting good news so I'd like to stick with that for now. What to say about Dialight? It continues its brilliant progress, and my profits are well over £100,000 on it. Trying to knock above 1200 at the moment, it's struggling for that but continues to look a long-term winner with even more upside. I remember so well buying these at 150 ish at a seminar in 2009 ! I never thought I'd still have them three years later at near 12 quid. Averaging up in these has made me a real fortune.

It's been tempting to take final and big profits on the Lovely LOQ, and it is on the slide however given it announced potential in other countries so on that basis staying in there!

Crapetshite (sale now on!! 100% off everything!!!) continues to drive me bonkers. How on earth much longer can the robots continue to keep the price so high. My short will hopefully pay off one day. Perhaps after I have gone to meet my maker. Wonder whether they have carpets up there?

Long termer Entertainment One surprised the market last week with the buying of Alliance .. but seems like a good move - still over doubled on the initial buys - and sticking in for much more upside will be the wise move I think. Up today in a bad market.

Brilliant GB Group is rising again after coming back on profit taking. I have trebled and doubled on it now, I would hope it will gradually drift up to the 100p mark by year end.

Sitting on a very nice profit on Greencore which has reached target but just holding on in case it can break out though close to taking the profit there.

A reminder you can spend a day with me and live markets on October 15th. Email me at robbiethetrader@aol.com for details.
I've been getting e-mails regarding my use of direct market access and who I use. I've tried a few and for me the easiest system for me is here:
http://www.igmarkets.co.uk/?QPID=1079&QPPID=1
Direct market access means you can place orders directly onto the order book bypassing brokers and market-makers with a chance to buy at the "sell" price. I would suggest you ensure you know what you're doing first but IG does provide much education with its "tradesense" educational tool which comes with it.
I also use its spreadbetting service too along with other firms like Tradefair because it now provides trailing stops which to me is a pretty sensible way of trading. Also with this link there is an excellent education programme and it offers the biggest range of smaller shares.

£100 Tradefair offer

I've also started using Tradefair for spreadbetting - I like the auto generated stop losses which help to maintain discipline and that's good for beginners I think. And exclusively for Naked Trader readers they upped the offer to £100 credit.
So there's now a £100 credit on offer for anyone opening an account via me. You get that after 5 spreadbets (terms and conditions apply).

Trade tables follow! Trades are current open and recently closed trades. Closed trades feature the closing price and the amount I won or lost. All others are open. Trades get updated a little later than the narrative. Trading costs are ignored, however I also do not add in dividend payments and with the kinds of companies I buy, dividends tend to equal or outweigh costs. Spread rollovers ignored for web purposes. Tables as accurate as poss however a mistake or two can creep in and very occasionally if I forgot I sold or bought something it will be added at a later time.
Trades first reported Wednesday afternoons under "Markets" section..

Apologies the short table had'nt been updated for ages, webmaster had problems getting into it, it'll get sorted as soon as poss - closed trades if you missed them included profits in Afren, £290, Senior £270, Northgate loss £210, Domino loss £110, Mecom profit £2,000.
