*Please note this website has a deliberately crap layout with a 2003 vibe.

But just think: no cookies, no ads, no popups, nothing flashing, no subs, I'm not interested in your email address to spam you. See, not that bad!*

Boo! Summer's over, certainly looks like it, in the middle of a thunderstorm here.

Looking forward to seeing some of you online this month on the 23rd and a small group of you in Spain next week for the NT retreat!

For the retreat, the villas are all booked, we'll be loading up the hire car with lots of goodies from the supermarket for you all.

Obviously the first time we've done this so bear with us but myself, Elizabeth and Kalpesh are all excited to welcome you.

I'll be hosting a quiz for the first night, so brush up that general knowledge before you arrive.

One of you seems rather too excited to see me in speedos.

Prepare to be rather jealous is all I can say.

There's a lovely pool which we should mainly have to ourselves.

Also we have booked a great restaurant for the last evening.

If you'd like to try an NT retreat they are for small groups only and we may do another next year again in Spain. If interested, let me know.

I hope you all enjoyed the sunny summer and didn't have to battle too hard at airports or in the car.

Somehow we never experienced any travel problems.

We're using London City Airport to get to the NT retreat for a change, it means any Heathrow problems won't affect us.

We can park the car there and it's a 5 min walk to check in.

Those of you attending the September 23rd online seminar you'll get a questionnaire from me the weekend before.

It is really handy for me if you fill it in as it helps me a lot to decide what to cover live on the day.

For those of you who were waiting for an online follow up seminar a new date is October 12th, mail me for details.

Had a fun trip to the 02 to see American comics Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock.

Got the boat up the river there and back. Boats were packed on Sunday.

We stayed over at a great hotel in Canary Wharf and unexpectedly got caught up in a major triathlon by the river!

We had amazing views of the cycling, swimming and running from the super athletes and frankly I was a bit jealous.

Why didn't I do all that many years ago?

They're all so dedicated to their fitness and judged by the ones we met over breakfast, lovely people too.

Chris Rock was the host of the Oscars who got slapped by Will Smith.

What's great about them both is they're willing to take risks and don't care who they offend which is refreshing.

Chris Rock came out the better of the two. Lots of crazy drug filled showbiz stories.

A chain smoking Dave Chappelle seemed a little tired and some of the routines didn't seem thought through - still entertaining and the audience of 10,000 plus lapped it up.

They're still on tour and definitely worth seeing.

Over the weekend while we were in town you really wouldn't have guessed we are living in what the media calls "broken Britain".

The restaurants were packed, it was lively everywhere, and everyone seemed to be having fun and enjoying life.

I kind of expected lots of begging/homeless but there was hardly any.

I'm not saying everyone is doing amazingly, but what we saw does give hope that just maybe things aren't as bad as what's being painted.

Covid does appear on the way out, we were in the packed arena and on packed trains over the weekend and are fine and negative ahead of our Spain trip.

An elderly lady I speak to on behalf of Help The Aged weekly who is 89 did get covid last week.

Any real problems? Not really.

Winifred said it just felt like a bad cold and she was surprised to test positive!

Yesterday after ten days with it she is now negative and can go out again.

Though she does say: "I'm not sure about going to Tescos, the price of butter now!"

(It has to be salted butter btw).
Good to see some of you online at the last event and thanks for the lovely feedback like this from Chris:

"What a great day! Thanks so much for the effort and time you both put in.

I've been a teacher for the last 30 years and I'm not sure I could have kept a group of pupils so captivated for so long.

Humour and in-depth subject knowledge go a long way!

Too many best bits to mention, but I was impressed that you had read all the questionnaires and had something to say about each one.

Also, I loved seeing your thought process in deciding which shares to trade and level 2 was also an eye opener.

Thanks Chris, we so enjoyed it.

if you fancy spending a day with me and live markets and a bit of fun too, mail me at robbiethetrader@aol.com with "September 23rd interested."
Thanks a lot for recent online seminar feedback!
.. Such as this from Phil:

"The seminar was delivered with huge integrity (there was Zero hidden agenda/ulterior motives, it was simple and open with some great laughs thrown in)

As much as I found myself trying to complicate the process and make it more sophisticated in my own tiny brain.

You brought it back to, Keep Things Simple. Do Your Own Research. Trade without emotion and above all, trade the market you find"¦ not what you or some pundit thinks it should be.

You also took the time to answer "every" question anyone posed. And it was every question.
Loads of shares ideas to boot, but more importantly the process to find your own.
Brilliant!
Thanks Andrew - we have got rather experienced at running them on zoom now!

Claire mailed me with some feedback on the seminar which she attended.

"Thanks for a fantastic seminar, I learned a lot and got every question I could think of answered. I think the most beneficial thing to me was just seeing with my own eyes how you go through the process of picking shares to buy and witnessing your thought process as you go through and also being able to ask questions as they arise. The system you and Elizabeth have for answering all the questions is fabulous & means you depart the maximum amount of information that is humanly possible in one day! The next day I just wished I was doing the course again instead of going back to work as it seemed dull in comparison."

Thanks Claire! It was a lovely group with a great sense of humour.

Jas, thanks for your mail as you've been to two zoom seminars.

"Just wanted to say thank you for a couple of wonderful seminars.
Your seminars were brilliant. Delivered methodically and with just a simple honest approach to dealing with the markets. You've helped me immensely in sorting my trading plan out and finding a good and profitable way to trade. After many months trying to figure out level 2, you sorted that out in one afternoon.

Since the seminar, I have placed 5 trades, 2 have closed out with profits and 3 are still running with profits. All trades placed using fundamental research and not Youtube videos
from David:

"Well it doesn't happen often, but I am absolutely speechless! I don't think I have ever spent a more worthwhile day nor spent money more wisely and gladly.

I for one was practically at the point of orgasm all day in my enjoyment and appreciation of what you were presenting! Even though I have read NT time and again, to see you going through the process of stock assessment over and over was incalculably useful and I managed to take six A4 pages of notes during the day. I was fascinated to learn about (and see) Level 2 in action and learn more about Spread "˜Betting'.

I thought the presentation balance was perfection, and Elizabeth was a complete star with her very well-judged handling of the questions....

.....This is a rather long-winded way of saying thank you so much to both of you - today was one of the top five most enjoyable days of my life, and I greatly look forward to joining you again!"

Naked Rambling

I'm glad I'm not in government trying to decide how to get financial help to the right people in the easiest way.

Boris J must secretly be pleased to be going - he can now earn top dollar
with memoirs.

I wonder whether if Covid, the war and inflation hadn't happened he'd be still
flying high.

I bet our share prices would be a lot higher too!

I have no idea what to make of the new leader, we'll see in time.

Anyway, apparently she is going to "deliver" which if true is more than the posties are doing in my area.

Chelsea has sacked its manager.

I'll do it for, oh, say £12 mill?

My first team talk: "Lads, score some goals and don't let any in.

"Right get out there, I'm off for a cuppa."

Be interesting to see how they do against our team Fulham on Saturday.

One Shot (****) Sky Documentaries

Surprisingly addictive doc following lads from south London trying to get pro football contracts.

One poor lad had to work in McDonalds and fit in training sessions.

Minimum wage or £75,000 pro contract? It's a tough old game and fascinating to follow the teens trying to make it.

Makes me very glad my lad didn't quite make it as he's a decent footballer.

The chances of making it are very small.

House of Dragon (****) Atlantic
The Game of Thrones prequel - like Succession with dragons.

Lots of families who want to kill or shag each other - all good fantasy fun except what happened to the lesbian scenes?

I guess there will be seven series before we catch up with the Game of Thrones timeline, so it should get more and more interesting.

The Capture (****) BBC1
Very decent thriller. Everyone's watching everyone else with hidden cameras.

Lots of twists and turns. Given the dearth of anything to watch over the summer this is the best of the new ones so far.

Let's just hope the state of play between China and the UK isn't as depicted here, if it is, we are in trouble!

Naked Attraction (*) Ch 4
Time for this to be axed?

Really lowbrow with right show-off plonkers wanting to show us their bits.

Just put your bits away, under the spotlights all the bits are rather unappealing.

The way the bits are discussed pretty horrible too. Just stop.

It's just the wrong way round, surely get to know people first then the bits.

Just as well I'm not appearing on it. I couldn't stand all the jealousy of the male viewers.

Ramy (****) Ch 4
An interesting comedy based on a young Muslim struggling to stick by the rules.

Problem is his family don't follow the rules either and in trying to impress the boss of the local mosque disasters follow.

Different, funny but also makes some interesting points.

Dave Chappelle/Chris Rock Live (***) 02 Arena and on tour.

Could have and should have been funnier given the expectation of these two massive names.

But worth going for the amazing atmosphere, a DJ set and some audience "roasting" before the main event.

If you get easily offended, don't go.

I suspect these two would be banged up in jail if this was ten years in the future so enjoy incorrect comedy while it is still here.

I can hardly believe a PHD in masturbation is being offered.

But for some teenagers surely what a great course - almost certain to get 100% distinction.

I suspect one teacher will say "Barry was poor at the written section but excellent in the practical."

The teletubbies are back, coming soon on Netflix!

I remember the days when my son was a baby waiting for it to come on at 6am, relief for a few minutes!

My son loved the teletubbies and the teletubby toys.

Indeed at age 17, would you believe it, he still plays with his tinky winky most nights.

EMAILS: I do beg you not to send me emails asking me for advice on a particular share. It isn't legal for me to give you individual advice and all I do is send you a mail saying that, which wastes a lot of my time and yours too.

****
COPYING TRADES: I can't stop you from copying a trade I made but remember the price may already be a lot higher than I paid indeed I hope it is as buying at good prices is what I do for a living. You may be buying at the top and could easily lose money. Also I can make terrible mistakes and have done in the past. I could also sell before you or before the share tanks. I may still be holding in a year when you sold at a loss. Always do your own research, don't jump in blindly. Market makers are very clever at knowing how to make you pay top dollar and then push you out at a loss. This site is about sensible investment and learning how to trade sensibly and is not a tipping site. Beware. Never push buy on anything till you've done proper research and got yourself a sensible price.

Markets

Markets continue to worry and it's not surprising.

It's been a torrid time for us poor investors and if you feel you can't go short it's hard to make a profit for right now.

Indeed August with low liquidity, large spreads and volatility has been a month to avoid, hopefully back end of September will make things easier.

The big question is whether markets will soon start to look forwards to perhaps a better 2023, the end of war and lower inflation.

If it does, and can, we could see some surprise strong rises before the year is out.

Probably worth still avoiding anything to do with retail or drinking and eating.

The prices! I see pubs are pushing through £20 for mains, and the cost of drinks is soaring.

Just a bit of simple food for four with drinks in a pub can push way over £150.

Two local restaurants here tell me they are struggling, not only with rising costs but also getting any staff, double whammy.

The guy who has run the local deli for years says it's almost impossible to find anyone to work for him.
He is having to close early.

Mind you, someone gave him a bad review and he replied by calling her a "spiteful snitch".

Is it worth buying anything right now or waiting for a recovery to start first?

I wish I could give you a definite answer!

Any "guru" or commentator who claims we are about to rise fast, or the end is nigh is just Bs-ing.

No-one can possibly know and it might be best to keep stakes low and some cash stored for now.

I think it's often better to wait before getting stuck in for recovery, wait for a bit of a recovery first, it can be bad for the wallet to try and get in at the bottom.

And there is always that fear of missing out!

However, there is a chance selective buying of great companies at lower prices could pay off.

As they say, you pays your money and take your choice.

As usual over August I didn't do too much because markets are just so hard. And I want to relax!

I tried a few small attempts at buying things in August, but it always ended up with small losses using "Get out quick" routine featured in the Naked Trader book (ed 5).

I ended up more interested in shorting as this for now seems the only way to make some profit and defend the isas.

Most of the trading was done for me with unemotional stops and I found a lot of trades were stopped out by the first week of August as markets started to slump.

However, some stuff held up reasonably well.

I tried to continue to hold the best and avoid anything with big debt or dodgy outlook.

Despite the gloom though, and perhaps against the mood, I think the outlook is actually quite exciting for us, and for beginners.

There are just SO many bargains about!

Lots of quality companies out there looking remarkably cheap and there could be a lot of profit to be made with selective buying at some point, but patience could pay off.

This is the time to have a list of quality companies at low prices - you have done all your research and ready to buy as and when volumes come back into the market.

It's happened a few times, governments have taken action to get things moving so we'll see.

It's in our nature to be over gloomy and fearful and think shares will never go up again.

But we humans are resilient, things always improve and bear markets never last that long, so what I'm saying is cheer up, there will be money to be made in the future!

For me, now, after stops took out a lot of trades I have a pile of cash waiting.

Despite lots of sales, the isa balance has gone down, however the spread betting shorts have thrown up decent profits.
One thing I always suggest is when shares just keep going down, keep an eye on shares holding up well, or going up while all else is going down.

This is one of the strategies in my new book out next year.

This worked well for me just yesterday!

A bit of luck involved as I was about to go out for the day but then I decided against.

I noticed GB Group heading higher against a bad day.

It wasn't just going up, it was beginning to soar and level 2 showed a massive ton of buyers wanting in.

I bought, and kept buying.

By 3pm I thought "Bid coming", and bought some more.

I ended up buying more than 50ks worth on spreadbets and in an isa.

It was no surprise to me at all when after the market closed it was announced a bid had been received.

It's interesting isn't it how stuff leaks before the market knows!

(And how many seem to know. How do they?)

The great thing is my buys weren't illegal insider trading because I was only guessing and I didn't know anything except probably there was a bid coming because of the buys.

Thing is now, do I cash in? Or wait for a bid at a higher price?

Tricky! If the bid gets rejected, the shares will retreat.

But say there is a rival bidder the shares could soar some more.

I've put in some stops that are in profit - so if a bid is rejected and the shares begin to fall then I still ought to get out with a good profit.

Given GB shares were way higher recently, any bid my guess is would have to be a lot higher than the current price.

Another share I noticed being pretty strong during the recent sell off is one I never came across before - NWF.

It distributes food, feed and fuel across the UK.

I hadn't noticed the excellent results in August, all the kind of things I like to see in results - higher profits, lower debt and "ahead of expectations".

It seemed quite confident at least for now it can pass on higher prices to its customers which was a little surprising.

Its fuel sector got a one off big bump which won't be repeated but even so with a low pe, a nice dividend and a decent looking management I'm tucking it away in the isa.

I've bought some Spire Heathcare (SPI).

It reported today and as you can imagine its string of private hospitals are extremely busy.

But my main reason for buying is the chances of a bid.

On figures given the debt it's not one I would normally buy, but the real value lies its assets.

It's been bid for once already a while back - the share price is well below where the bid came in and I reckon any bid would have to be around 300p.

Happy then to hold for that, unless it really starts to dip in which case the usual stop will apply.

I am trying the Airtel Africa (AAF) trading range trade again.

I discuss below how it worked out for a profit previously.

(Thanks to Steve for spotting this amazing range at the last seminar).

There seems to be a 131-160 range and it is near the bottom.

Strategy? Buy at low 130s, and try and sell around 155.

But this needs a get out quick should the range break down.

So I am out of it for a small loss should it break below 127p.
I added some more I Energiser IBPO.

The company had put itself up for sale but has changed its mind and instead issued a very strong trading update yesterday afternoon.

News is revenue is up 30% "significantly ahead" and profit increases look good too.

A very bullish statements, and another superb dividend coming.

This share has simply been amazing.

I've had mammoth dividends off it the last 3 years including one I think of 16,000 special dividend.

Whatever it's doing I hope it keeps doing it.

It's nicely under the radar, has been going up while others have been going down and looks a lovely isa tuckaway for more capital gains and big yield.

Turning to shorts now (for newbies this is betting on shares to go down).

I noticed Trainline had gone up a lot so I got stuck into a new short here.

I've gone on about this one being too highly rated ever since it was floated.

Directors sold millions of shares a while back.

With trains in crisis and the Government likely to come up with its own ticketing system I can't see why you'd be in this.

I also shorted a couple of companies I think are very decent - it is just unlucky for them for now inflation and energy costs will continue to bite.

So Next and Whitbread have gone into the ever growing short pile.

They are all really well run and I wouldn't want to be short of these for long.

But higher energy prices, inflation and a lack of demand is going to cause problems for these I think before a likely recovery later in the year or next.

Primark has pledged not to raise prices and you wonder whether Next is going to struggle a bit for the rest of the year.

I was thinking of trading out of the Boo Hoo short but shares are performing so badly I shorted some more.

However, I suspect it won't be long before I finally bank the profits here as I'm not sure how much downside can be left.
I've also done some shorting of various indices.

The Dax in Germany seemed a better short than the FTSE as that's topped with oil companies doing well.

But I have a short in both.

I don't list or say much about trading indicies or publish trades in them it's because I don't want any of you beginners getting into it.

It's way too hard unless you're much more experienced.

Remember you can do your brains if it goes wrong or out of control.

So please, only attempt shorts or longs on indices if you really have a handle on it and a proper plan.

Beginner or not doing this long? Best to leave alone.

Right onto quite a few shares that got axed or stopped out.

Two shorter-term trading ideas worked out well.

The Team 17 range idea 380-450 worked for a second time and banked a profit of £795.

Could it work a third time as it is back at the range bottom?

Maybe but this time going to be more cautious and I'll wait for upcoming results just in case.

The AAF range trade remarkably worked again 130-160 roughly though I could have played it a lot better.

Instead of selling up at the top of the range I waited too long and sold it something like 10p below the high before the trailing stop kicked in.

Still, a profit of £925.

Be interesting to see if my new range trade in AAF works again.

Look, interesting for me, I know you've got more interesting things on your mind.

A few shares hit stops or trailing stops.

Tim went for a loss of £590, Nfc made a loss of £389, ccc profit £141 and part Me for a profit of £3,030.

However with Me I kept a good lot and thinking about a new buy there and currently have a buy order in on Me on the order book.

It looks great value after falling after it went ex dividend for a big amount.

I've sold the short in Cineworld you may remember I took out in February for a profit of £11,375 before it likely goes bust.
If you are short of a share and it goes bust it is good news - the problem is though you may have to wait 3-6 months to get the pay out as the SB firm wants to confirm it
really is a bust.

Better then to bank a profit if you think the share is about to bust before it does.

It might mean a slightly worse profit but why not take it and move on?

OK, I might make another £2,000 or so but not worth hanging on for months for it.

I sold the tep top up for a profit of £1,102.

However I hold the rest and it looks like there could be a new charge higher after recent profit taking.

RDW went for £261 and Mgam for a loss of £80.

Elsewhere Ricardo has been going well against the flow.

Totally announced some excellent contract extensions this morning.

Aston Martin has yet another fundraising. Without Saudi support it would be a bust.

Even this raising isn't enough and I'm holding on to that short!

One holding K3C is now looking very cheap, thinking of dipping in around here.

Liz Truss has promised to deliver, deliver, and deliver.

Does this make her the first...

Amazon Prime Minister?

I had a lovely glass of wine last night, surprised me as it wasn't expensive.

So this site has broker notes on companies, plenty of in depth research. You can find things such as pre-tax profit forecasts and the most shorted companies. There's an easy search facility and also a news feed.
So for example on the morning of a share result or statement you can get a broker report on that share, it is really useful! Broker reports are usually very in depth and I especially like being able to see a full year pre tax profit forecast which seems impossible to get elsewhere.
You can get a limited free account - for full access if you like it - click "upgrade" and there is a 20 per cent discount if you type nakedtrader into the discount code box.
The address is research-tree.com - for the discount remember the code nakedtrader after you ask to upgrade. If you upgrade let me know if the upgrade thing works well and is easy or if you encountered any probs getting the 20pc off.
For small caps try http://www.spreadex.com/nakedtrader. Spreadex say for the moment they will carry on with most of the shares so that could be another place to deal in shares IG won't.
Trades made for my sipp are exclusively available on my email service (this is the website stuff plus exclusive trades mailed to you earlier on update days). For subscription details mail me

If you are thinking of A ftse trade try https://www.spreadco.com/nakedtrader
as their spread is the tightest at 0.8. Also very pleased with execution - FTSE cos the cheapest spreads there too.

It is hard to find a firm that does prices on the very small companies but this company does: https://www.spreadex.com/nakedtrader

Trade tables follow! Trades are current open and recently closed trades. Closed trades feature the closing price and the amount I won or lost. All others are open. Trades get updated a little later than the narrative. Trading costs are ignored, however I also do not add in dividend payments and with the kinds of companies I buy, dividends tend to equal or outweigh costs. Spread rollovers ignored for web purposes. Tables as accurate as poss however a mistake or two can creep in and very occasionally if I forgot I sold or bought something it will be added at a later time. Trades first reported in the diary under Markets every other Thursday afternoon.
