Tangerine Dream

Welcome to any new readers coming to the website from the new book, I would suggest you read the spreadbetting book in conjunction with Naked Trader, available here:

**
You can tell when winter is on his way.
Tangerines begin to make an appearance about the place. From never a tangerine to be seen for months suddenly with the days getting shorter loads of the buggers begin to appear.
Sadly every year I look at the first ones thinking along the lines of "they look nice" and grab one. Then comes the usual disappointment. Not that great. So I try a couple more in case it's a one off.
Then as the winter months go on they become a last resort. Hmm, nothing in the kitchen worth eating, tried the fridge nothing there. Hang on, at least there's a tangerine going!
Strangely it doesn't seem to be possible to buy one or two of them. They always come in bags of about 100. It's obvious why. No-one would buy any if they were sold in singles. They look good value, so many of them in a nice netted bag.
Late into the winter when eventually everyone knows they're not much good they start to hang about the place, unwanted, like the Xmas tree.
They get all wrinkly and sad. No-one's fooled anymore and no-one wants them. Which is why they disappear to start the cycle all over again every October.
Mind you I think I already learned from last year. After the initial excitement I ate four - there are now 4 left in the bowl and no-one else is going to eat them - not even the cleaner.
So I wonder how old and withered they are going to get before they get chucked....
Tangerines, the cycle of life.
Lucky for me there's always my treat box. As long as I've succeeded in hiding it from the cleaner there's always some chocolate on hand. Now that's never disappointing!
I've been dallying with the idea of accepting the London School of Economics' invitation for me to speak to them.
I hardly ever accept speaking engagements. I've turned them all down - Investor Show? No, ta. Worldwide Traderinvestorflogthemyourbookoranythingelseyouwannaflogthem? No, ta. Go on you know you want to! No I don't really.
I don't have shiny powerpoint presentations with lovely looking slides. And I don't say what the organisers think they want the audience to hear.
And for me they're full of men in tatty old pinstripes trying to sell something to slightly weary but maybe this time it'll work investors. So I don't.
If you remember the LSE reckoned I could give an interesting talk on economics. I wrote and said I don't know the first thing about economics. In fact knowing about economics is bad news if you want to trade.
Good poker players are far more likely to make good traders than clever economist or accountants.
They don't realise trading is like a card game, it's you against others. Economics doesn't come into it. I've met economist and accountants simply too terrified to make a trade. Too worried about acid test ratios!
Anyway they wrote back and said it doesn't matter, talk about what you like.
I'm getting tempted to do it for a laugh. And it might be fun to challenge perhaps their assumptions about the market. I'll let you know!
Quiet weekend though off tonight to meet some friends in town for a posh meal..
Christopher hardly ever gets a babysitter... but he likes this one anyway. We think he ends up negotiating a pile of smarties for good behaviour. Good practice if he wants to become a trader!
Thanks for the continued feedback on last Friday's seminar. I'm really glad to read some of you are already using some of the techniques I showed you.
Some of you appear delighted with one or two of the "tricks" I taught about timing and judged by the mails I'm delighted that you really did "get it"!!
Do remember which side of the order book is which! I hope if you all carry on using the tools I showed you, it ought to transform your trades.
Once again it was a pleasure to host the event and thanks for all those gin and tonics. Well, I think thanks - I wasn't so sure when I woke with such a sore head on Saturday!
Those of you who missed this seminar don't despair as I've booked the next date!
It's going to be on Friday Nov 26th. Booking now open so mail me for details at robbiethetrader@aol.com with "Nov Seminar interested" in the subject line.
Those of you booking at this early stage will get a very generous early booking discount!

A lot of the day comes directly from the live markets and I show you many of the tricks I use to get good prices live. And there might even be the odd live trade or 2!
**I'm now taking bookings for the technical analysis seminar on Sat Dec 4th with top trader Susan Marmor and myself. Spreadbetting firm Tradefair Spreads has upped its offer exclusively to Naked Trader readers to a £100 credit. This offer is exclusive to me and not available anywhere else...
I've been using them for a few weeks to check that I'm happy with the service. As you know I don't take ads or allow referrals on the site unless it's a company I've used and I feel confident about.
What I like about it is it's easy to use, spreads are surprisingly tight on the smaller companies and interestingly an automated stop loss is applied to each trade - so beginners know what their max loss is from the outset.
Anyway they now offer a £100 credit as long as you deposit £100. You get the credit after you placed 5 trades (Terms and conditions apply)
If you'd like to apply for an account with Tradefair Spreads and get the freebie click this link:

The number of emails to me is nearly reaching saturation point and I'm struggling! I'm getting 100s which is lovely in a way but killing me in another.
The main problem is the length of some of them, indeed some run to the length of novels, so, please, help save my eyes and please keep mails to under 150 words.. you can do it! It's close to the stage where I am going to have to say I will answer all mails but those over 200 words will get deleted. Keep them short and sweet, please!!
Also, it's possible the answer you seek from me is already in FAQ's. And do remember I can't discuss individual shares with you as it would be classified as investment advice which I'm not authorised to give.
Many of you enjoy the cheap advfn toplists bronze deal through me as do many of you with the cheap level 2. However many of you say you want a half-way house to include real-time share prices always on.
So I'm pleased to announce I've managed to seal a new deal with Advfn for its "Silver" service - that's always on real-time share prices for a good saving (Bronze toplists etc are included in this).
The deal is via me you can save £30 for your first year by paying just £138.06 inc vat via me instead of £167.47.
Just mail me for full details if you'd like it with "silver" in the subject line.
They've just re-published "The Zulu Principle" by Jim Slater who's written a 2008 update at the beginning.
This is a brilliant classic book. Reading this is a real pleasure and it was a great idea to republish.
Jim believes like I do the best gains can come from smaller stocks and in an easy to read style takes you through how to evaluate smaller companies that are about to become bigger ones - he uses some excellent examples.
Really this is a must read for all more longer-term investors or anyone looking to grow their money... a number of you have also written to me about this book and praising it.
Here is the link to buy it:

Here's a very topical one: The Little Book of Bull Moves in Bear Markets by Peter Schiff.
The book is all about how to keep portfolios up in a down market. He focusses a lot on how to play commodities and win with some sensible advice especially on natural resources and precious metals. He is very much a realist and there is no rubbish here: some straight talking and some interesting strategies.
Everyone who invests should think seriously about keeping portfolios up in bad times so this book should be read.
Well worth picking up at this link:

Several people have asked me for a recommendation on a book which shows how to study accounts in a reasonably easy way. The one I like the most is http://books.global-investor.com/books/15717.htm?ginPtrCode=10453 by Robert Leach. Ten crunch questions to ask before buying any company.
It' s a decent easy-to-read book with several key chapters and it's highly recommended. It's one I keep and dip into from time to time. To order, click this link... http://books.global-investor.com/books/15717.htm?ginPtrCode=10453
The best book on charting and easiest read on the subject is http://books.global-investor.com/books/15618.htm?ginPtrCode=10453 by Alistair Blair. Click here -> http://books.global-investor.com/books/15618.htm?ginPtrCode=10453
Another good one is the second edition of http://books.global-investor.com/books/23792.htm?ginPtrCode=10453 by Peter Temple. Included in this one is how to use spreadbetting, CFD's warrants and trackers to reduce risk. And there are some decent trading strategies too.
This is an excellent book for new investors and also experienced ones. It explains all the things you may not be sure about in the markets and will explain the tools that are there. Naked Trader Seminar Latest News
(SEPTEMBER 24TH SEMINAR NOW SOLD OUT - SORRY)
Fancy spending a day with me, learning all the ways I have learned over the years to find good shares and play the markets? Well, you can at one of my seminars!
Booking is still open for the Naked Trader seminar on Friday Nov 26th.
Price is £495 plus vat. However right now there is a generous early bookers discount!
That includes three course lunch, coffees, snacks etc.
The seminar is mainly aimed at beginners and dabblers though improvers are welcome too.
Topics covered using live market feeds all day include: Market psychology, level 2 - a simple guide to how to use it for better timing; how to value companies; finding companies that are about to rise. I will also cover techniques for handling events such as the recent meltdown and volatility.
Spreadbetting: How to use it to gain an edge and go short. Market makers - how they work and how to beat them; how to stop losing money and make it instead and plenty more.
How to plan trade entries and exits - how to research companies and understand reports, plus all those niggly questions you always wanted to ask. How to set stop losses and targets. Charts and how to use them.
Also covered: Market maker tricks: How to spot tree shakes and use them in your favour, How to tell when NOT to buy a share. I use live ADVFN all day with lots of level 2 and looks at all kind of live market data.
The idea behind the seminar is SIMPLICITY. I don't use jargon or fancy words - everything is in PLAIN ENGLISH! No question is too stupid and the event is held in a friendly relaxed and supportive environment.
The idea is you will come away from the event I hope a wise and better investor with lots of new ideas. I try and translate complex topics into easy bite size pieces. I also aim for it to be entertaining as well as instructive.
If you are interested please e-mail me at robbiethetrader@aol.com with "seminar interested" in the subject line and I will send you full details of the event including comments from those who have come to previous seminars and you can then decide whether you would like to come. See you there!
One seminar attendee Clare wanted to write a testimonial about her experiences at the seminar which follows now!
"I've just come back buzzing from one of Robbie's seminars. What a day! He's just brilliant, and manages to pack an awful lot into one day, and with his enthusiastic and humorous delivery the day just flies by. There are no gimmicks, no sell, no "˜get-rich-quick' promises, just his own solid, sound approach which he has learnt over the years and which works.
He shows you how to minimise the risks and maximise the profits and points out the banana skins on the way. Where the seminar really comes into its own is when he teaches using live level 2. Hearing him talk through his thought processes and reasoning is invaluable, and really brings home everything from the book. He has endless patience answering peoples' questions, and really seems to care that everybody understands.
On top of that, you meet some really nice like minded people and swap e mail addresses, you're plied with
chocolates and coffee all day, have a great lunch and spend the evening getting tiddled with Robbie in the
bar afterwards! You might even get to see the amazing crocodile boots . . . .
Don't worry about the cost, it's easily worth it, and you'll soon make it back with your new-found investment skills, and in what you're no longer losing. If you're thinking of going along to his next seminar, whether you're a novice or an experienced trader, don't hesitate ""just go!
Thanks Clare, did you want the tenner in cash, or will a cheque do?

Naked Rambling
I have a feeling before long we'll all be thinking: "You know what, that Gordon Brown wasn't so bad...."
Big mistake by BBC workers to strike during the Tory conference. Very damaging and encourages the view of its left wing bias already admitted by the main man.
But worse of all it encourages the view that BBC workers are in a bubble of their own, immune from cuts made to everyone else's pensions.
Most people's final salary pensions were shut down years ago even before the recession. Companies can't afford them - some pension deficits are so bad they have brought down many companies. Many still struggle with deficits.
Time for those at the beeb to live in the real world. It's the same for everyone else you know.
It's very easy being on the left when being cosseted by nice wages and a fat pension (see union leaders) - most of them like Eddie M, haven't got a clue about the world or business.
Hurrah! That stupid dratted "bus lane" at the end of the M4 is to be axed.
John Prescott set this up as part of the anti-motorist saga. For years it's meant this main road into London has been clogged up.
Normal motorists sat and fumed while Prescott and Blair used the lane "for security reasons".
Next on the list must be a tearing up of the thousands of idiotic petty laws dreamt up over the last few years.
Another brilliant Mad Men... same theme as the Labour conference, the new generation gradually taking over from the old...
And yet another poor woman realises the truth that if you get involved with a very handsome man, expect to pay the consequences...
The Sun is coming out with all sorts of stories about the Apprentice candidates.. one apparently has been bailed by the police over fraud, one would be doc has been up before the beak and one made a "race attack" on three cabbies.
Looks like the show's producers are keen to get good ratings this year!
I caught some kind of new Gordon Ramsay show on the TV briefly. Oh no, it's the same old ham. Except it looks like he had a lot of botox.
Thing is I am so over him! The irony is hilarious though that he needs the income from TV to keep his restaurants open...
What are Man City doing taking Fulham's place in the Europa League. Hmm, 1-1 against Juventus eh?
Just a reminder of a previous scoreline... Fulham 4 Juventus 1 (!) Maybe it shows you can't always win just by spending.
The spreadbetting firm I use for sports betting is here:
Via this link Open a Sporting Index account, you can get £100 cash into your account, terms and conditions apply.
http://www.sportingindex.com/?tpid=6755
Do remember if you do bet you ought to treat sports spreadbetting as entertainment - and expect to lose! Also with spreadbetting work out what your max loss could be and make sure you can afford it! In other words if you say backed the favourite at 15 for a fiver and they come nowhere your max loss is £75.

Duane writes:
Wanted to say a big thank you to you and Mrs NT for an amazing day of learning and fun at your Septemnber seminar.
The way you explained the share trading from start to finish was understandable and really interesting, well worth the seminar fee!
It was great to hear such down to earth and honest assessment from a successful trader like yourself. The way you explained everything was good revision from your book and gave further insight into successful share trading.
I particularly liked your live trades and going through your accounts when you gave snippets of why you invested in certain shares and why you kept/dumped them. Also helpful was the way you searched for prospective shares and within minutes discounted them or put them on a short list for further examination and correct entry points. Amazing!
You could really tell that you loved doing what you do and your energy levels to keep going till 10pm was well....... I had to leave at 9pm I was shattered!
Thanks again Robbie I am keen to put into practice what you have taught me. Even though you make squillions from your trades and I am sure don't need to do the seminars for financial gain, but please keep doing those seminars for newbies like me!
Thanks Duane! Don't expect to be doing them foreever but very rewarding for me to help people so expect to carry on for a while longer.
Mike writes:
I would just like to thank you again for the great time at the follow up seminar and would like to report that thanks to your methods of teaching I have completely changed my investing style and since my first seminar a while back my fund is now nicely up which is a complete turn around from my day trading the FTSE days!
Mike glad to hear of continued success! It does take time to figure out what works for you. Some can make money day trading but it isn't for everyone and investing can be easier for some, including myself.
Terry writes:
Fantastic seminar.
I have always been sceptical of the public testaments you see on web sites
saying how great an event was. Now I'm one of those people!. I
genuinely believe that the tips and techniques as well as the overall
approach you demonstrated will radically improve my trading performance
Thanks Terry, well all the testaments are real but know what you mean and glad you feel it was worth it!
John writes:
Thanks for a great seminar last Friday, everyone I spoke to enjoyed it and marvelled at how you kept going so long; you certainly gave value for money.
If the seminar taught me anything it was how to trade in a more professional and detached manner. I realise up till now I was just playing at it.
Thank you once again for a fantastic day that will remain with me for the rest of my life.
Thanks John, though my wife sometimes complains I go on for too long.....

Markets
The strength just keeps coming in every time it looks like a nasty fall is due. A pullback soon would be no surprise but the falls do kept being bought.
A quieter couple of days after the manic trading of the last week (well manic for me anyway!)
With the portfolio continuing to shine
I've added some Afren (AFN) on a spreadbet getting another £30 at 110. An oily which continues to do well but seems to have decisively broken upwards so it seems worth the gamble. It's extremely volatile so nerves of steel usually required to remain a holder. Target 130 stop 98.
My favourite oil services group Kentz (KENZ) continues to rise. I'm up nearly £1,500 after sitting with it patiently and it looks a good time to top up with the price, like Afren, breaking up - so another £15 goes in on a spreadbet at 288. Target 330 stop 280.
Porvair has been having a great run and sitting on mighty profits! So I've just topsliced a few selling some at 82-61 - for website purposes I'll close the last position for a profit of £485. Nothing wrong with it I think except it may stick here for a bit before attempting 100 and I'll use that spot of cash released elsewhere.
There's nothing better after holding a share for a long time, because of rises in the price you hold a lot and then the bid comes in - another 30% on top, a great profit and plenty of cash to find the next one!
That was the Spice story for me with the bid confirmed at 70p giving me a nice profit of over £3,000. Now I hope for the same happy ending with Nestor.
The share has gone through the bid price of 90 - the papers and the markets assume there might be a rival bidder in the market though it's odd the company has not said anything considering the big price rise and some very heavy trading.
My profits currently are well over £20,000. In particular the spreadbet has made a fortune! Originally it was supposed to be short-term and held it for more than a year. As it was a rolling bet I totted up the costs of the bet have been about £150 to keep it going, However credited dividends cancel out the costs and indeed make a profit.
It'll be fascinating to see how it plays out and whether the market was right to assume there is a new bidder.
Recent buys chug along fine, Xchanging, Sportingbet, Xaar, E2V all do ok.
Microgen continues to look exciting and having doubled now hoping for the treble and it doesn't look far off - if as I suspect it will carry on being re rated as a tech stock it should head up to at least 120.
African Aura had a bit of a shake but is on the way back and a quick star performer! Andor say they are ahead of expectations which is good news. The share price should continue back up as it looks like profit takers are nearly done.
Recent top up Alternative Network goes very well and and had a good day yesterday rising over the 190s. Next target has to be the 200 area, any move through there and it looks bullish. Really just holding for a bid.
Photo Me continues a brilliant run - looks like it will shortly be a doubler - no sign of it stopping.
Recent buy The Vitec Group has managed to break up a bit. Patience should pay off! Gone ex dividend today so a payment coming too. Pushing 500 at the moment and looks like it might get through
Recent top up Alterian needs a good few goes to get through 200 but any more above there would be bullish. Nearly four timed that one from the first buy.
Micro Focus continues to recover nicely, super Yule Catto continues to rise, 250 could be on the cards.
Volex has sparked up yet again this week and went to 300 but that was too much for now - fair enough but would expect it to make another crack at it soonish. Back into the 270s today.
Devro seems to be starting a new run up it got through 250 and now having a crack at 260. What a brilliant one this has been..
Dialight's run continues and it seems to have conquered the 400 at last, closing above there a couple of times. Shame about the wide spread though. Mulberry continues its good run and now battles with 400 leaving me nearly 150 points up! .
Telecom Plus produced a steady as she blows report today. They're cleverly trying to ensure they pick up good quality customers who pay their bills. With customer numbers rising it looks like a lovely long-term hold which should see a continued slow but sure advance in the share price together with a lovely big dividend yield.
XP Power has zoomed up even higher and now past 800!! I'm still holding onto the original buy at 150! Shows sometimes it really is worth being patient. Touching 900 now.
Lovely Petrofac has surged again heading for nearly 1400 and together with Enquest sees me sitting on profits way in excess of £20,000. Of course it's volatile but a strong uptrend remains intact.
Hyder climbs again after its excellent statement yesterday. - a bid still looks like it's in there for nothing!
Aggreko has seen a massive rise and it gets further bought every time it weakens - made a big amount here in a short time but I'm intending to stay with it. Some bid rumours have been floating about in the paper s but who knows? Spirent has doubled for me and there recent top up is in profit. It goes higher today.
So all is good. But October is here. Can it carry on going higher or will our hopes be dashed by an October sell off? Won't be long to find out..
I've been getting e-mails regarding my use of direct market access and who I use. I've tried a few and for me the easiest system for me is here:
http://www.igmarkets.co.uk/?QPID=1079&QPPID=1
Direct market access means you can place orders directly onto the order book bypassing brokers and market-makers with a chance to buy at the "sell" price. I would suggest you ensure you know what you're doing first but IG does provide much education with its "tradesense" educational tool which comes with it.
I also use its spreadbetting service too along with other firms like Tradefair because it now provides trailing stops which to me is a pretty sensible way of trading. Link is here: -
http://www.igindex.co.uk/?QPID=1078&QPPID=1
that also includes a pretty decent educational programme. As usual before opening accounts please read all the warnings on the sites. You can lose a lot of money if you're not careful so pay close attention to them and make sure you always understand what you are doing and what your potential losses are.
£100 Tradefair offer
So there's now a £100 credit on offer for anyone opening an account via me. You get that after 5 spreadbets (terms and conditions apply).

You have to work at it, but if you do genuine repeat wealth could be yours. I did it. You can too. For full details, why not email me at robbiethetrader@aol.com.

Trade tables follow! Trades are current open and recently closed trades. Closed trades feature the closing price and the amount I won or lost. All others are open. Trades get updated a little later than the narrative. Trading costs are ignored, however I also do not add in dividend payments and with the kinds of companies I buy, dividends tend to equal or outweigh costs. Spread rollovers ignored for web purposes. Tables as accurate as poss however a mistake or two can creep in and very occasionally if I forgot I sold or bought something it will be added at a later time.
Trades first reported Weds and Fri afternoons under "Markets" section.. afraid I can't do live trades as that would turn me into a tipster and I'd have to be regulated!
