Star coffee - less bucks
*Just a note to those coming to my Nov 27th seminar - I sent you all venue details yesterday.. if you are booked in and did NOT get it please let me know asap!*
The biggest loss I ever made was on a company called Coffee Republic where I managed to lose £7k plus by being incredibly stupid as detailed in my book.
I liked the coffee - what idiotic reason is that for buying a share?
I bought the shares at 28p and sold them at 3p after buying more at higher levels - current value? 0p!
Still my stupid buys of this share taught me a lot of lessons. So in a way I'm grateful I took the loss.
Myself and Mrs NT have been invited to take part in an upmarket charity quiz night in a couple of weeks.. and guess who could possibly be a member of our team.
Yes, you couldn't really make this up - the founder of Coffee Republic.. who will be sitting in the seat next to me!
The question is do I say: "Thanks a lot.. where's my 7k, I want it back..."
Or "So, what went wrong?" Go in with a Costa Coffee cup?
Or "Cor blimey I lost a packet on your bleeding shares. Oi you. Outside - now!!"
I've not been in a Coffee Republic since the loss which is why Starbucks gets my business.
I think they are still going though the shares are suspended. I'll probably end up being very polite.
Talking of charity do give generously to this year's poppy appeal. Don't give a coin, give a note. I'll fill you all in on what happens when I meet the founder off Coffee Republic after it happens!
Thanks to all of you for asking whether I'd found my bits and pieces. Yes.
Found! The remote control was in the garden.
Found! My camera was lodged behind a cupboard in Christopher's bedroom.
Found! My Ipod was in a playbox in Christopher's playroom.
Found! The Car key was under Christopher's bed.
Now I know what he's doing when he's padding around the place in the early hours. The next thing that went missing was the BskyB card.
"Domino (the cat) took it," said Christopher.
I told him that he would be unable to see tonight's edition of Peppa Pig (no doubt in which Daddy Pig does something incompetent) unless said card was found.
"Where did Domino put it?" I asked. "Maybe in that drawer," he said.
Hmmm, funny how things can be found when it directly affects his comfort.
A fun weekend ahead for us - we hardly ever get time on our own with a four-year-old around...
But this weekend we are away in town while Grandma looks after the lad. We've got a free top hotel for the weekend, a show and a meal and we intend to do some shopping!
It's the annual Telecom Plus (Utility Discount Warehouse) do for those of us who have more than 500 customers.
Tonight we get treated to a meal at one of the restaurants owned by the boss of the company. We get put up for two nights at a top London hotel.
Saturday we go to see a matinee of Oliver at the theatre. Looking forward to that.
And on Saturday evening together with some of the directors of Telecom Plus we are being treated to a meal at the private dining room cooked by top chef Anton Mosimann. Can't wait!
These events are always great fun. We get to meet some really amazing people who have managed to sell telephony and utlities to more than 500 people. That takes some motivation but they will already have had their reward from being single-minded enough to do it - and this always makes them interesting people.
Always fascinating too to chat to the Telecom Plus bosses -a very good bunch of lively people.
Tell you all about it on Wednesday. If you fancy becoming a Telecom Plus distributor let me know. And indeed if you want to switch to TEP, let me know and you get my twice weekly email. See - I still enjoy selling though it's more for fun than the money these days.
Thanks to all of you who wrote in telling me not to buy a hampster. I publish one of them below. Apparently kids get bored with them quickly.
So thanks to readers Carl, Kerry, Lily and Daisy who came up with www.gogohamster.co.uk - a real-life toy one - what a good idea - we hope to buy one while shopping at the weekend..
It's Christopher's birthday this month so we will get him a pretend hamster and a kids digital camera as he loves taking pix.
The number of emails to me is nearly reaching saturation point and I'm struggling! I'm getting 100s which is lovely in a way but killing me in another.
The main problem is the length of some of them, indeed some run to the length of novels, so, please, help save my eyes and please keep mails to under 150 words.. you can do it! It's close to the stage where I am going to have to say I will answer all mails but those over 200 words will get deleted. Keep them short and sweet, please!!
Also, it's possible the answer you seek from me is already in FAQ's. And do remember I can't discuss individual shares with you as it would be classified as investment advice which I'm not authorised to give.
If you missed my recent seminar there is one more left this year.
Booking is open for the very last seminar I intend doing this year - it'll be on Nov 27th at Heathrow. It's getting close to a sell-out like the last one, so if you want to come do not leave it too late.
If interested in details mail me at robbiethetrader@aol.com with "November seminar interested" in the subject line and I will send you details.
My seminars are designed for beginners, dabblers and improvers and deals with everything from how to look for winners, how to research, spreadbetting, level 2 use how to time trades and short, how to use advfn properly and run your portfolio without having to spend money on systems and tipsters.. and tons more.
A lot of the day comes directly from the live markets and I show you many of the tricks I use to get good prices live. And there might even be the odd live trade or 2!
Spreadbetting firm Tradefair Spreads has upped its offer exclusively to Naked Trader readers to a £100 credit. This offer is exclusive to me and not available anywhere else...
I've been using them for a few weeks to check that I'm happy with the service. As you know I don't take ads or allow referrals on the site unless it's a company I've used and I feel confident about.
What I like about it is it's easy to use, spreads are surprisingly tight on the smaller companies and interestingly an automated stop loss is applied to each trade - so beginners know what their max loss is from the outset.
Anyway they now offer a £100 credit as long as you deposit £100. You get the credit after you placed 2 trades (Terms and conditions apply)
If you'd like to apply for an account with Tradefair Spreads and get the freebie click this link:
http://promo.tradefair.com/nakedtrader100/
Still with BT for your phone line? Why? Move over to Utilities Discount Warehouse under me and pay just £8.99 for your line rental, and deal with a nice company. I get commission and in return you get my e-mail - this site into your mailbox at every update!
You could also add energy, guaranteed cheaper than the top 6 suppliers and get the lot on one bill every month. Mail me at robbiethetrader@aol.com if you fancy it. Easy to do!
MF Global offers a free £2 bet on the FTSE to all readers.
I use MF Global myself for spreadbets on the smaller companies as they have more online than anyone else and offer spreads on pretty much everything.
To take up the offer either click the MF banner you should find somewhere on this page, or cut and paste this link into your browser and you can sign up online:
http://tinyurl.com/c524ku
Terms and conditions obviously apply, check them on that link.. I think those are good offers.
Many of you enjoy the cheap advfn toplists bronze deal through me as do many of you with the cheap level 2. However many of you say you want a half-way house to include real-time share prices always on.
So I'm pleased to announce I've managed to seal a new deal with Advfn for its "Silver" service - that's always on real-time share prices for a good saving (Bronze toplists etc are included in this).
The deal is via me you can save £30 for your first year by paying just £138.06 inc vat via me instead of £167.47.
Just mail me for full details if you'd like it with "silver" in the subject line.
The money - real money - is already coming on from my own internet shopping site which is at www.ei42.com/nakedtrader.
In fact I've already made £1,000 - that's in a very short time and as this grows I think there could be a very good income there.
YOU can make money out of this too - by simply doing your online shopping as normal but via your site (it costs nothing) and then tell friends to open their shopping site using the link from yours - you then get commission on their buys!
Have a look at this link:
http://www.ei42.com/Nakedtrader/
So for free you can sign up and get this site for yourself.
Everytime you buy anything yourself on your site you get commission.. So if you normally shop online anyway it's a no brainer: just use your own site instead of going direct and get some commission every time you shop.
Then you just get some friends to sign up and get their own site too - when they do online shopping using their mall, you get commission too. Simple as that.
It's all explained on the site top right.. just click "Make money with your own shop find out more" and it's all explained. Or click here
http://www.ei42.com/?10850514
So you just shop away as normal - but now you earn commission - and there's also decent money off coupons too on top of that!
They've just re-published "The Zulu Principle" by Jim Slater who's written a 2008 update at the beginning.
This is a brilliant classic book. Reading this is a real pleasure and it was a great idea to republish.
Jim believes like I do the best gains can come from smaller stocks and in an easy to read style takes you through how to evaluate smaller companies that are about to become bigger ones - he uses some excellent examples.
Really this is a must read for all more longer-term investors or anyone looking to grow their money... a number of you have also written to me about this book and praising it.
Here is the link to buy it:

Here's a very topical one: The Little Book of Bull Moves in Bear Markets by Peter Schiff.
The book is all about how to keep portfolios up in a down market. He focusses a lot on how to play commodities and win with some sensible advice especially on natural resources and precious metals. He is very much a realist and there is no rubbish here: some straight talking and some interesting strategies.
Everyone who invests should think seriously about keeping portfolios up in bad times so this book should be read.
Well worth picking up at this link:

I've had heaps and heaps of praise from many of you regarding The Financial Spreadbetting book.
The book really seems to have helped a lot of you understand spreadbetting a lot more than you did. You say it's really helped you with ideas too. The writer deserves commendation. With the ability to go short so important in these volatile markets, it's a must read. To order click this link... http://books.global-investor.com/books/23307.htm?ginPtrCode=10453
Several people have asked me for a recommendation on a book which shows how to study accounts in a reasonably easy way. The one I like the most is http://books.global-investor.com/books/15717.htm?ginPtrCode=10453 by Robert Leach. Ten crunch questions to ask before buying any company.
It' s a decent easy-to-read book with several key chapters and it's highly recommended. It's one I keep and dip into from time to time. To order, click this link... http://books.global-investor.com/books/15717.htm?ginPtrCode=10453
The best book on charting and easiest read on the subject is http://books.global-investor.com/books/15618.htm?ginPtrCode=10453 by Alistair Blair. Click here -> http://books.global-investor.com/books/15618.htm?ginPtrCode=10453
Another good one is the second edition of http://books.global-investor.com/books/23792.htm?ginPtrCode=10453 by Peter Temple. Included in this one is how to use spreadbetting, CFD's warrants and trackers to reduce risk. And there are some decent trading strategies too.
This is an excellent book for new investors and also experienced ones. It explains all the things you may not be sure about in the markets and will explain the tools that are there. To order The Investors Toolbox by Peter Temple (new edition) click the following link for delivery in 24 hours... http://books.global-investor.com/books/23792.htm?ginPtrCode=10453
Naked Trader Seminar Latest News
Fancy spending a day with me, learning all the ways I have learned over the years to find good shares and play the markets? Well, you can at one of my seminars!
Booking is now open for the next Naked Trader seminar on Friday November 27th
Price is £495 plus 15% vat.
That includes three course lunch, coffees, snacks etc. And most importantly it covers choc bars and fruit gums too.
The seminar is mainly aimed at beginners and dabblers though improvers are welcome too.
Topics covered using live market feeds all day include: Market psychology, level 2 - a simple guide to how to use it for better timing; how to value companies; finding companies that are about to rise. I will also cover techniques for handling events such as the recent meltdown and volatility.
Spreadbetting: How to use it to gain an edge and go short. Market makers - how they work and how to beat them; how to stop losing money and make it instead and plenty more.
How to plan trade entries and exits - how to research companies and understand reports, plus all those niggly questions you always wanted to ask. How to set stop losses and targets. Charts and how to use them.
Also covered: Market maker tricks: How to spot tree shakes and use them in your favour, How to tell when NOT to buy a share. I use live ADVFN all day with lots of level 2 and looks at all kind of live market data.
The idea behind the seminar is SIMPLICITY. I don't use jargon or fancy words - everything is in PLAIN ENGLISH! No question is too stupid and the event is held in a friendly relaxed and supportive environment.
The idea is you will come away from the event I hope a wise and better investor with lots of new ideas. I try and translate complex topics into easy bite size pieces. I also aim for it to be entertaining as well as instructive.
If you are interested please e-mail me at robbiethetrader@aol.com with "November seminar interested" in the subject line and I will send you full details of the event including comments from those who have come to previous seminars and you can then decide whether you would like to come. See you there!
One seminar attendee Clare wanted to write a testimonial about her experiences at the seminar which follows now!
"I've just come back buzzing from one of Robbie's seminars. What a day! He's just brilliant, and manages to pack an awful lot into one day, and with his enthusiastic and humorous delivery the day just flies by. There are no gimmicks, no sell, no "˜get-rich-quick' promises, just his own solid, sound approach which he has learnt over the years and which works.
He shows you how to minimise the risks and maximise the profits and points out the banana skins on the way. Where the seminar really comes into its own is when he teaches using live level 2. Hearing him talk through his thought processes and reasoning is invaluable, and really brings home everything from the book. He has endless patience answering peoples' questions, and really seems to care that everybody understands.
On top of that, you meet some really nice like minded people and swap e mail addresses, you're plied with
chocolates and coffee all day, have a great lunch and spend the evening getting tiddled with Robbie in the
bar afterwards! You might even get to see the amazing crocodile boots . . . .
Don't worry about the cost, it's easily worth it, and you'll soon make it back with your new-found investment skills, and in what you're no longer losing. If you're thinking of going along to his next seminar, whether you're a novice or an experienced trader, don't hesitate ""just go!
Thanks Clare, did you want the tenner in cash, or will a cheque do?

Naked Rambling
Problem for him is The Guardian has said it will remain free. Unless all the papers do it together those that remain free will see their viewing figures multiply and so ad revenue.
I can see a lot of shadowy meetings going on till next June which is now the deadline for charging to start.
I like reading The Times online but not sure I would bother paying for it if other reasonable papers were available free.
Of course the BBC news site will stay free.
I think Murdoch is going to struggle and if he does charge he is going to have to make it a small charge to start with. Interesting times!!
Time for us to get out of Afghanistan. The "it saves us from terrorism here" line doesn't wash. With 250 killed already it would have taken probably three terrorist incidents here to kill that many so who is Brown trying to kid?
There are more people dying through the war than if there had been terrorism here. Also by continuing we become targets anyway. And the politicians are far more concerned about their expenses than our youngest and finest dying for little reason.
Commiserations to our neighbours Fulham FC for that silly sending off that cost them the game. Still they are on form so hopefully the injuries won't cost them too badly against Wigan.
"Mandatory sex lessons for every 15-year-old" says The Times. What's the point of that? In some places pupils have already had sex.
The post strike is over for now. So I guess normal service of letters a week or two late at 3pm will resume...
I missed The Restaurant so will have to watch it on I Player. Those of you who missed it the brilliant Thick of It is Back, unmissable along with Curb, More 4 on Thursdays.
If you press "Sports" there is a preview of the weekend's sports betting action and a look at the weekend games.
Get to grips with sports spread betting by opening an account with Sporting Index. . Click the link below to find out more.
http://www.sportingindex.com/?tpid=6755
Do remember if you do bet you ought to treat sports spreadbetting as entertainment - and expect to lose! Also with spreadbetting work out what your max loss could be and make sure you can afford it! In other words if you say backed the favourite at 15 for a fiver and they come nowhere your max loss is £75.
Naked Mail
Read your website and smiled. My son is now 22 but how your stories brought back memories! Just my advice but don't buy hamsters, gerbils or any other caged creature. I did when my son, Jim, was Christopher's age.
We had to have not one but two females (apparently gerbils get lonely according to the lady in the pet shop!) She assured me, indeed promised they would only live 18 month at the most. Oh yeah! Nearly 5 years later I would come downstairs every morning to find them in the peak of health - bloody gerbils - God, how I wished they would pop their clogs! They did eventually, long after Jim had lost interest in them!
Thanks Steve will take your advice on this and avoid anything small and furry!
Richard writes:
The people of this country need to be mobilised and motivated to fight back against what's happening in the UK by gradual excuse after excuse for building the Orwellian database, and its eventual sinister misuse by immature officials who are becoming the police and creating a climate of fear and suspicion and over criminalisation of ordinary people who just want to be left alone.
In recent years the excuse was anti terror, they don't bother with that one now - it's spies in the dustbin and hysteria over children instead.
What alarms me even more than what this government is doing is that the Opposition should be leading the rebellion but is not doing so. it's time for the people to rise!
Thanks Richard - I agree let's rise up. Oh hang on, let's not, the X-Factor is starting!
Greg writes:
"A little toast story for you. I had the dubious pleasure to going on holiday with my mother-in-law, flight out of Gatwick at 6am... So we decided to use one of the airport hotels (which are very cool because you can leave your car for free in the hotel car park).
M-i-L got her toaster out at 4.30am and started making toast in her hotel room, next thing she knows the silent fire alarm goes off in the hotel and 2 massive night staff blokes bundle into her room..... To investigate a fire! She had the shock of her life!! Toast was great though."
Thanks Greg - could have been worse - the hotel might have been evacuated. Maybe she did it on purpose to get 2 massive blokes into her room?
Julia writes:
Thanks so much for a wonderful seminar on Friday, everything about it was brilliant. I can now see why some people keep coming back again. Have spent this morning raving about you and it, so may well end up sending a load more people your way .. Thanks Julia.. erm but too many please!

Markets
The biggest thing I learned from visiting spreadfirms recently for a book is the main block of traders that lose are the ones after a quick buck. The ones that want to make their money now. Today. Right now. They lose (except for the very odd genius). (Hi Richard!)
Those who have patience are the winners - those that play FX, indices looking for a quick killing end up being killed by big losses. Anyway it's a fact. Don't shoot the messenger, right?
Dips continue to be bought - many think the market is in for a rocky ride and they may be right but all the big dips get bought for the moment.
As I write this the markets have taken a tumble but again it would be no surprise to see another big dip being bought up.
Innovation Group (TIG) looks interesting again. Made a few quid on this a while back and I think this is a good area to buy back in. Its last statement looked promising with some progress made. Cash balances are up. While next statement will be nothing more than in line probably it's a bid that interests me with little downside if there isn't one.
The company has knocked back a couple of bids in the 15p area but I suspect a couple of pee more might secure it. I got 25,000 at 11.5p. target 16 stop 10.
You may remember recently I made a nice sum out of Booker (BOK), the wholesaler. On the face if it, it looked pretty boring but made nearly £2,000 selling the last lot at 43ish.
I got back in for 10,000 at 44.5. What I like here is I think there are some growth prospects and particularly if Marks and Sparks' rollout of other brands into its stores continues as Booker supplies M and S. Target 55 stop 41. It'll never be a world beater but could land me another lot of boring old profits given time and patience. I'm glad to be back with my old boring mate Booker.
And now Centamin (CEY) is on the main market at last I could buy some for my ISA so I nipped in for 3,000 at 134. Already discussed this one and a nice profit already on the spreads where I got lower prices. I sold the remaining Phtm at 37.1 to bank a profit of £435. My reasoning was the inability to break 40p properly a few times - one I'll keep an eye on for re-entry though.
Elsewhere Nestor Heathcare, a recent top up continues to shine well. Interesting to note a big buyer has bought more recently and holds 26% from 24% - 30% usually triggers a bid and that's why I hold with interest in the hope of a bid at around 70p.
Other recent buy CSR is into profit but very volatile and tends to move with the market for now.
Doubler Chime moves well today and tries to conquer the 200 again. Recent buy Hunting moves into profit (volatile too)
Recent top up Microgen continues very well indeed - this has been such a marvellous share where I've now doubled from my first buy with excellent profits of over £5,000. I still think there is more to come from this well managed outfit.
Small oil stock Aminex holds well and is even up a bit in the dodgy market after its promising drilling report.
Batm - glad I held on as there were some nice buyers yesterday and it looks stronger. Spirent holds onto recent gains well enough after results. Dimension Data begins to look quite exciting.
Int Tel Sys is consolidating well after recent gains. Long-termer Heritage has been weak but on the rise again.
Dragon remains just under the bid price and continue to hold for hopefully a bit more - though still happy to nab the £7,000 plus profits.
Alterian is on the rise again after good press comment - a lovely trebler worth profits of more than £8,000.
So, all in all, most pleases. However markets remain a bit edgy and it will be interesting to see if buyers keep coming in on the dips.
Every bit of stat coming from the US triggers a knee jerk reaction. Markets remain tricky for now! But on the whole I'm staying with things rather than panic out.
One thing to remember is the market reached a peak of nearly 7000 and we're now around 5000!
I've been getting e-mails regarding my use of direct market access and who I use. I've tried a few and for me the easiest system for me is here:
http://www.igmarkets.co.uk/?QPID=1079&QPPID=1
Direct market access means you can place orders directly onto the order book bypassing brokers and market-makers with a chance to buy at the "sell" price. I would suggest you ensure you know what you're doing first but IG does provide much education with its "tradesense" educational tool which comes with it.
I also use its spreadbetting service too along with other firms like Tradefair because it now provides trailing stops which to me is a pretty sensible way of trading. Link is here: -
http://www.igindex.co.uk/?QPID=1078&QPPID=1
that also includes a pretty decent educational programme. As usual before opening accounts please read all the warnings on the sites. You can lose a lot of money if you're not careful so pay close attention to them and make sure you always understand what you are doing and what your potential losses are.

It's called residual income and is a far better way to enjoy a ripe old age than relying on a pension. Because even after you stop selling the money STILL comes in!
I still get paid EVERY MONTH for sales I made back in 1999! Every time a customer uses broadband or the phone or switches on a light you get paid.
It's a great business and backed by a stock market company (Telecom Plus), a dedicated team of advisors.. and me to help you on your way!
Not only do you get paid out every month for each customer you can take on distributors. encourage them like I do and get paid on their sales as well.
One day, say you could made redundant, needed a year off or wanted to retire early can you imagine what joy it is to have the regular income coming in. It's wonderful.
You have to work at it, but if you do genuine repeat wealth could be yours. I did it. You can too. For full details, why not email me at robbiethetrader@aol.com.

Trade tables follow! Trades are current open and recently closed trades. Closed trades feature the closing price and the amount I won or lost. All others are open. Trades get updated a little later than the narrative. Trading costs are ignored, however I also do not add in dividend payments and with the kinds of companies I buy, dividends tend to equal or outweigh costs. Spread rollovers ignored for web purposes. Tables as accurate as poss however a mistake or two can creep in and very occasionally if I forgot I sold or bought something it will be added at a later time.
Trades first reported Weds and Fri afternoons under "Markets" section.. afraid I can't do live trades as that would turn me into a tipster and I'd have to be regulated!
