Tonight is the night! We are out to the posh Michelin restaurant for a FREE meal!
You might remember a while back we complained to the boss that our food had not been good enough. It really wasn't. So we were offered this
freebie.
What do you reckon? Tap water only so it really is free. Ask for the 0.00 bill and frame it?
But the chef and staff will know we moaned last time. Will they be looking and pointing as us freeloaders?
More worryingly will the chef try and get some revenge? I am going to be looking very closely at all the sauces....
It's quite bizarre going to a Robbie Burns night when your name is
Robbie Burns. I'd never been to one so I had to accept an invite to one from a friend with vague Scottish connections.
My name was everywhere, I was spoken about all night in glowing
terms. Made me feel quite good.
Robbie Burns was amazing. What a guy." All night
long. My self-esteem was at a high.
My name also plastered everywhere. I never want to
be famous but maybe I'll change my mind.
I had never been to such a night before. After all it's just an
accident. I don't have any Scottish connection
bar the name.
I'm half Irish, half Greek, born in London. I think people expect me
to be tough sounding Scottish guy before they meet me.
The event at the start felt a bit like going to a wedding. Tables with
your name on (er, Robbie Burns? Someone is having a laugh!).
Some friends were round the table so it was time to catch up on gossip.
Starter was Cock a Leekie (there is a joke there somewhere I thought of one but it felt half cocked) the main
was Haggis and mash.
The haggis was ok actually. Some had the veggie version which tasted
pretty foul. The haggis tasted a bit like the stuffing at a Xmas dinner.
Oooh I mentioned Xmas already - only just over 11 months to go!
Then like a wedding there were speeches. All about me! A bagpiper
played (ouch!). It was all a bit weird but kind of fun too.
Then we're invited to a hallway for the "dancing". This involves a band
of two playing with a lady on the mike telling you what to do.
You practise first, then go for it. It is fun because all the mistakes you
make build up causing plenty of hilarity.
There's around two hours of this leading up to midnight for aude
lang sign.
Totally knackered getting home at 1am feeling like that really was
a workout after dinner.
I'd say if you are invited to one and sigh and think "it's not for me"
just go.
Life is so short and there are plenty of times you're invited to things and
feel "Nah". But then you end up going and it's great.
It's very easy now in this "social media" world to prefer to sit at home
and "chat" to "friends" on the internet. Often people you never even
met.
But surely better is to get out there and socialise, after all we are
a pack animal and we need others.
So stop with twitter and false "friends". Get out there with real friends
and enjoy real experiences. So there.
Arrived at the flat I own close to the Fulham stadium with my son
for the Fulham/Spurs game. "Go on ahead," I said as we were
a bit late.
Then I thought. "It's cold. We're going to lose. Plus I'm fed
up with all the miserable old gits sitting round me moaning
on and on."
So I got a nice cuppa, slice of cake and watched it on the
telly. Much better view, warm and no moaning gits.
Hang on, does that make me a miserable old git?
My son arrives back gutted at the last second goal wot
won it for Spurs.
What kind of fan are you?" he scoffs. Fair enough.
Don't tell him I really don't mind a drop down to the championship.
The tickets become cheaper, the old gits won't be there
and we win loads of games. What's not to like?
Out last night to see the Laurel and Hardy movie "Stan &
Ollie"
What a talent Steve Coogan is. You can see the hard work he put
in as Laurel. Had him off to a tee. Nice.
It got good reviews but overall, despite a great cast and a decent
script there was something missing for me, perhaps laughs.
It was really a portrayal of friendship and betrayal and also about getting old and when to call it a day.
More sadness than fun then. But really well done, so do go see it just don't expect to laugh much.
Great to meet the newer investors/traders at the Dec beginners/improvers
event.
Lots of lovely people, enjoyed the Xmas lunch, crackers etc! And lots
of great chats. Thanks for the lovely feedback.
Thanks to you all for feedback on the events and I know some of you
are already happily following the rules.
It seems self-obsessed to print all the feedback but why not
just one from Paul...
Thanks for a brilliant day. It provided much needed focus
which was refreshing and enjoyable. The venue was
great, food excellent and I would highly recommend
the seminars to others."
Thanks Paul.
Naked Rambling
If there is a general election Corbyn will be the next PM.
I feel it is obvious. Everyone will want to give the Tories a kicking,
most under 25s will vote for him as they already got brainwashed
from the last election.
The Russian social media bots will be piling in. Putin would love a Corbyn
government.
Just like the Brexit vote was won by saying "Turkey" and "Take Back Control"
so the election will be won by saying "No student fees" and "Time for a change".
People listen to absolutely no depth any more and you just need two slogans to win anything. And it doesn't matter at all they are lies.
Vat goes digital from April" says the papers.
As someone who dutifully spends time collecting tax for nothing on behalf of the government every quarter this looks like even more time wasting.
This is awful for small businesses - they should be spending time on those not having to think about their tax every day.
Also the tax people haven't sent me a thing about it. I have absolutely no idea how I'm supposed to do it. Deep sigh.
All those who have to do vat should at least have got details of how it works, and some worked examples.
Did you get through Monday the so called gloomiest day of this year?
I was in a good mood. Then I banged my knee on my pinball machine (don't ask) and since then now being an old fart I've been hobbling
around. Bloody gloomy Monday.
It looks like it is time for someone to tell Phillip it's best he doesn't drive anymore.
Though hands up who wants to be the one to tell him?
I remember a day when my mum drove me to Scotland at 45mph in the middle land the whole way.
Cue hooting and people overtaking on both sides. V signs and more.
I tried hard to persuade her to stop the awful middle lane hogging. But she felt "safer" in the middle lane so that is that.
Great sense of humour from Eric Salama, head of Kantar who was stabbed coming back to his car from getting a coffee.
I felt lucky, nothing life threatening. Most distressing aspect was being identified as a Chelsea fan in the press reports," he said.
Try telling someone you follow Fulham. A look of pity is the next thing on the agenda.
Talking coffee Starbucks is trialling a coffee to your door service.
What a bad idea. My qualification for that comment is I used to own a coffee
shop.
You buy a decent coffee, you drink it right away! It should never be left longer than a minute or so.
The doorbell rings. "Here's the tepid coffee you ordered, sir."
Oh gee thanks, I must do that again."
Cleaning Up on ITV is getting trying, the plot holes wider and wider and events that just wouldn't happen!
There is bugger all of interest on TV at the mo, so continue
to rewatch The Sopranos.
Sky has just started re-running it from series one. If you never
saw it, you missed the best series ever, just pipping Breaking Bad!
SEMINAR NEWS
New date mar 18 2019 near Heathrow
Email me for details at robbiethetrader with "Mar seminar interested". There is
a current very large first ten to book discount
Beginners and improvers welcome. Come and spend the day with me, the markets and some lovely people - and of course, lunch, lots of sugary snacks.
My seminars are designed for beginners, dabblers and improvers and deals with everything from how to look for winners, how to research, spreadbetting, level 2 use how to time trades and short, how to use advfn properly and run your portfolio without having to spend money on systems and tipsters.. and tons more.
A lot of the day comes directly from the live markets and I show you many of the tricks I use to get good prices live. And there might even be the odd live trade or 2!
Some recent feedback:
He actually takes you candidly right into the mental process involved in his successful trading, making it a pretty amazing display, even showing his own investment accounts right there on the screen. This is a genuine coaching session in how to trade like him if you put in the graft. My advice therefore would be to sign up for this while he is still prepared to do it.'
When I signed up to your course my goal was to make 20% p.a., I've achieved that in less than six months. Your course was pretty much going to be my last attempt at trading, So once again thank you, it's by far the best money I've ever spent on trading education and probably on education full stop."
I felt we were in for a long day of numbers, PowerPoints and dry talk.
Instead, what we got was fascinating and enjoyable mix of punchy insights, merriment and wise-cracks, sharp wit, and to the point no nonsense advice. I sat down at 9:45am and didn't look at the time again until way after 8pm at which point I had to drag myself away."
I read your books and understood the words "" however I was missing that final nugget of knowledge "" actually seeing you valuate a company and make that buy/no buy decision live means I now get it."

MARKETS
EMAILS: I do beg you not to send me emails asking me for advice on a particular share. It isn't legal for me to give you individual advice and all I do is send you a mail saying that, which wastes a lot of my time and yours too.
****
COPYING TRADES: I can't stop you from copying a trade I made but remember the price may already be a lot higher than I paid indeed I hope it is as buying at good prices is what I do for a living. You may be buying at the top and could easily lose money. Also I can make terrible mistakes and have done in the past. I could also sell before you or before the share tanks. I may still be holding in a year when you sold at a loss. Always do your own research, don't jump in blindly. Market makers are very clever at knowing how to make you pay top dollar and then push you out at a loss. This site is about sensible investment and learning how to trade sensibly and is not a tipping site. Beware. Never push buy on anything till you've done proper research and got yourself a sensible price.

Patisserie Valerie has gone bust and you definitely have to feel sorry for shareholders.
It looked a decent business.
However private investors seem to be keen now on learning how to avoid the next fraud by excitedly reading books on the topic etc.
Yes, but none of these experts predicted this.
I feel it is a total waste of time for traders to bother wasting their time. Because the reality is, it really doesn't happen that much, taking aside the small dodgy aim shares.
I have never in 20 years of being a full-time trader ever had a company
go bust on me.
I never bought Patisserie because it was obviously always overvalued. Anyone buying it was paying a multiple of 35 times! Crazy for a cafe business. Indeed it is why I shorted it a couple of times. Sadly I took profits on the shorts way too early, and only small ones. I should have been more patient.
If you avoid anything with big debt and don't pay massive multiples for businesses which don't have massive growth prospects you'll probably be ok.
Concentrate on research. But don't spent hours on trying to be a forensic accountant because if you do, you'll probably get scared and never buy a single share!
An "analyst" downgraded ITV shares and sent them lower even before the market opened. What power to move a FTSE share! I bought some more! More in a min.
So I laughed at The Times headline this morning: "Top Tip: Don't trust city analysts on which shares to buy".
The ten stocks leading banks most often rated as a buy dropped more than 17%, much more than if you had stuck a pin in the FT to pick shares.
And guess what? The ten stocks they most recommended as a sell...
rose the most and performed better than the markets.
Now you know what to do... watch for a sell recommendation, wait for the share price to fall .. then snap it up!
Markets as a whole seem a bit gloomy but not quite in sell all mode. There seems to be no major panic for now. I wonder if people think Brexit will get sorted one way or another soonish.
If it does, even a crap deal, we'll probably see some decent rises in some shares as there are a lot of marked down shares that look value
But there isn't any rush to do anything I reckon. Why not just wait for the air to clear before getting involved?
This is my stance and I remain in a ton of cash. After lovely gains last year I don't want to give much back and that's my bottom line for now.
So any buying is small for the moment. My eye is out for anything that has been marked down but looks like it still has good prospects.
I bought some small XPP. I kept trying to buy at the sell price day after day for some time. At last I got some, handy as the spread can
widen sometimes so it is nice to start a trade at zero spread.
It might be a turnaround story. It has had a crap time with shares crashing right down. However a recent statement shows some cause for optimism that it might be bottoming out. It made an acquisition which has pushed debt up but should bring profits up. Dividend is useful at over 4% and
that is going to be pushed up.
I can't really be sure though, hence just a small buy for now. And I'm trying again to get a few at the sell price. And it's one of those I will be out quick on it it resumes a downtrend.
Trying to buy shares at sell prices using DMA is covered at my seminars, I can't cover it on email as it is too complicated, sorry!
I picked up some Cineworld (CINE) after what I felt was a decent trading statement.
They had a record 308 million customers and a 7pc rise in revenue.
There's a very strong list of films coming out and the company is opening new site and sorting out renovations to some of the older flea pits.
Results are March 14th and I am looking for a breakup past the 300p mark.
I bought some more K3C, one of my longer-term holdings, which came out with a statement. Strong growth and a record Xmas reported and lots of positives. It was marked down a bit so I bought because an initial down reaction was due to a lower Ebita. But that's only because some contracts have been pushed into H2.
Dividend is close to hitting 5 per cent and indeed holders are about to pick up a near 4p dividend as it goes ex dividend next Thursday. If it can stay level or only down a touch next Thursday that would be a result. The near 5% yield makes it a decent long-term hold.
I've tentatively (have you noted yet I am wimpily tentative as a buyer at the mo?)
bought a few Fulcrum (FCRM)
This one was suggested by a delegate at the last follow up seminar. I quite liked it but there were a couple of minor things I didn't like and so left it.
But, it is now 20pc lower and that's enough of a markdown to get me interested in a small I might buy more if it rises.
Directors bought a few in December at higher prices too. It went ex dividend today for 0.75 so I'll cop a small amount of cash.
A broker downgraded ITV. I just didn't agree but it drove the share price down so I bought some more.
I still think it looks like a cracking takeover target this year. I think a battle could develop and could see a bid battle. If that doesn't happen the shares still look good value.
I sold the last of my short in IG for a profit of £2,456 . It's been a brilliant short with total profits on the two shorts totalling £8,696 . The statement wasn't great but enough for me to close. I can't complain, best short for a while (though not as good as the best ever, Carpetshite).
Ffx began to weaken again so sold for a profit of £75 and a loss of £122.
I am looking to try one more time at a lower price, but it would be
my last try as there does seem a lot of value there,
Cfx ( a tiny holding) went for a loss of £250. (Hit stop)
Aug went for a profit of £160 (bored). Ketl went for an overall loss
of £310. (150 seems major barrier)
Some of my shares have had a great start to the year!
A super statement from Spirent which is rocketing up. Looking
for some profit taking to buy some more.
H & T has proved a great trade, a super statement yesterday saw the shares soar. I'm going to carry on holding as it could break up over 300
on its financials.
Safecharge has charged up and is having a bash at getting over 300p again. Sopheon is flying up after some profit taking.
Car tester Ab Dynamics continues to accelerate upwards.
An email arrives. I can't give individual investment advice so if anyone asks me for a view on a share it is always a no.
But on this occasion:
What do you think of crypto currency trading? Because it was recommended by Martin Lewis I was tempted but thinking of the
old adage if it is too good to be true.. so I did nothing but now ads
are everywhere.
I am not rich but could afford £500, I know you can't give advice but how about a vague comment?"
I decided to hell with it, a vague comment was not needed. I simply replied:
NO NO NO NO NO NO"
If I end up in jail for giving that piece of individual advice can one of you visit me and bring some cigs? Those are the only things I will be able to trade inside...
(one free for every ten purchased.. anyone... )
(The Martin Lewis bit is a scam, he didn't recommend, quite right too)

EXTRA INCOME FROM HOME
When I left my full-time job to trade it really helped having another income: this I got from part-time selling energy and phone services to people and getting a cut of their use of their home services forever! I still get enough from it now to pay all my bills. I am a great believer in multiple incomes and this is a great one in my opinion as anyone could do it.

Trade tables follow! Trades are current open and recently closed trades. Closed trades feature the closing price and the amount I won or lost. All others are open. Trades get updated a little later than the narrative. Trading costs are ignored, however I also do not add in dividend payments and with the kinds of companies I buy, dividends tend to equal or outweigh costs. Spread rollovers ignored for web purposes. Tables as accurate as poss however a mistake or two can creep in and very occasionally if I forgot I sold or bought something it will be added at a later time. Trades first reported in the diary under Markets every other Thursday afternoon.
