Bye.. but back in 2010

** Update: still space available at the Jan 15th seminar - mail me for details if interested**

First the bad news.. this is the last update for quite a while and there are no updates now till next year yes, I know, Boo Hoo. But I'm off on my hols from next Wednesday.
So I will be back again all refreshed with regular updates from January 6th.
Next Wednesday we are off .. to South Africa. Right up till Xmas Eve!
Hope you don't miss me too much!
So I guess before anything else I ought to wish you all a very happy New Year and Xmas period.
It's going to be a bit odd on coming back late on Xmas Eve to bad weather after being in the sun and there will be nothing in the house! Let's hope the corner shop is still open..
Lucky some friends are feeding us on Xmas Day. Christopher is very excited about the whole thing and already has his Fireman Sam case packed with toys ready to go.
It's going to be a long flight but going there is overnight so hopefully we can sleep - we have one first class and two premium economies! I'm not interested in buying flashy jewellery, cars etc - but I don't mind splashing out on great holidays as experience is so important. I promised to share the flat bed with Mrs NT (ooh er) so we'll all get some sleep..
Problem is we are going BA and the strike is on for our return leg so here's hoping we don't spend Xmas Day in a grotty hotel at Capetown airport waiting for a plane.
So we're in a beautiful hotel and we look forwards to the weather, the food and lots of wild animals.
Half-way through we're being joined by some good friends and their children. Actually, it's my Swiss trading friend Laurent so no doubt we shall be talking trading by the pool rather than actually doing any! He does all kinds of exciting things with his trading like Straddling. No wonder his wife looks happy.
A reader who lives in Capetown has mailed me his mobile number and offered us a trip around from a local point of view and I expect we shall be calling him to accept!
I look forwards to giving you all the news and holiday gossip in the new year.
The aged cat used to sleep 23 hrs a day and eat for an hour. Now it is split 16 hrs sleeping, 6 hours eating and one hour complaining about not eating.
Maybe this happens with old cats - she is also getting grumpy. I still love the furbag though.
Only thing is it is starting to get a bit wearing being miowed at every hour on the hour for another bite to eat. And it has to be something different from the last snack.
I've had to turn drug dealer and have given her a cat nip banana today. So far it's worked and she's loved up curled up with it now and hasn't asked for food for two hours. Could be a winner. It's like the summer of love all over again.
Christopher asked: "Is the cat going to die?" "Yes," I said, trying not to upset him, "but not for a long time.."
He brightened up. Such a caring child. "So," he added. "Then we just get a new one?"
Well, Christopher is very happy with the Xmas toy of the year: Go Go Hamster - apparently each hamster is now trading at £30 as there is no stock! Hey, we made £20 profit on each hamster.
If you manage to get hold of one beware!! Your toddler's instinct is to bury hamster into your hair - hamster then grabs your hair with its wheels and before you know it you'll need to cut some of your hair off!!
There is a small warning about this at the bottom of the hamster - you have been warned. Not that it matters for me being hairless.
Christopher wants to take the hamsters on the plane. Hmm, I can see it now. He lets them go and scares half the cabin and the plane has to make an emergency landing. I can see us in the Daily Mail now. "Hamsters On A Plane" Could make a great movie.
It's been a terrific year for us - the end of last year was just horrible with Christopher in intensive care and us fearing the worst after he contracted a horrible disease. We spent many dark nights by his side at the hospital.
But he came through it and in 2009 he has burst back into health and we absolutely adore him - in 2009 he has given us love, laughter and joy. Well, let's face it, hardly any sleep too...
He started Big School and he loves it. And I was in the lucky position of being able to pay all his school fees up front till he's 13 which gives me a great feeling of security. That's the great thing about ISAs being able to take out cash tax free.
We had a brilliant summer - out most nights in the park or walking or swimming - we made the most of every day. Life is so short and for me every day counts as special.
Highlight of the year of course was being the doubles tennis champion of the Hotel Lakatiri in Greece!
Thanks to all you regular readers for your interesting comments over the year and hello to the many of you I met during the seminars this year.
Thanks to all of you for the great feedback coming in from last week's seminar - so glad so many of you found it useful. If you haven't had the notes please let me know but do check spam folders first!
Some of you are already up and running using level 2 like I showed you and producing some good results. Remember, often level 2 tells you what not to buy TODAY! One of its main advantages.
The next seminar is already filling up... that'll be on Friday Jan 15th. Which will have to be called the "Happy New Year" seminar. There are still seats available if you'd like to come and you can pay at the door on the day.
If you're interested then email me at robbiethetrader@aol.com with "New Year seminar interested" in the subject line and I'll send you details.

My seminars are designed for beginners, dabblers and improvers and deals with everything from how to look for winners, how to research, spreadbetting, level 2 use how to time trades and short, how to use advfn properly and run your portfolio without having to spend money on systems and tipsters.. and tons more.
A lot of the day comes directly from the live markets and I show you many of the tricks I use to get good prices live. And there might even be the odd live trade or 2!

With Xmas on the way have a look at the shopping site I'm involved with.

I now use it to buy pretty much everything online and I get a kickback from everything I buy from places like Debenhams, Boots, Mothercare etc. Even things like parking at Heathrow, hotel rooms, anything!

YOU can make money out of this too - by simply doing your online shopping as normal but via your site (it costs nothing) and then tell friends to open their shopping site using the link from yours - you then get commission on their buys!
Have a look at this link:
http://www.ei42.com/Nakedtrader/ then click "earn money" on the rhs. So for free you can sign up and get this site for yourself. What's brilliant is any product you want type it into the search and it will come up with it, which store it is at and where it is cheapest, then buy it and earn commission on your spend!
Everytime you buy anything yourself on your site you get commission.. So if you normally shop online anyway it's a no brainer: just use your own site instead of going direct and get some commission every time you shop.
Then you just get some friends to sign up and get their own site too - when they do online shopping using their mall, you get commission too. Simple as that.
The number of emails to me is nearly reaching saturation point and I'm struggling! I'm getting 100s which is lovely in a way but killing me in another.
The main problem is the length of some of them, indeed some run to the length of novels, so, please, help save my eyes and please keep mails to under 150 words.. you can do it! It's close to the stage where I am going to have to say I will answer all mails but those over 200 words will get deleted. Keep them short and sweet, please!!
Also, it's possible the answer you seek from me is already in FAQ's. And do remember I can't discuss individual shares with you as it would be classified as investment advice which I'm not authorised to give.
Spreadbetting firm Tradefair Spreads has upped its offer exclusively to Naked Trader readers to a £100 credit. This offer is exclusive to me and not available anywhere else...
I've been using them for a few weeks to check that I'm happy with the service. As you know I don't take ads or allow referrals on the site unless it's a company I've used and I feel confident about.
What I like about it is it's easy to use, spreads are surprisingly tight on the smaller companies and interestingly an automated stop loss is applied to each trade - so beginners know what their max loss is from the outset.
Anyway they now offer a £100 credit as long as you deposit £100. You get the credit after you placed 2 trades (Terms and conditions apply)
If you'd like to apply for an account with Tradefair Spreads and get the freebie click this link:

MF Global offers a free £2 bet on the FTSE to all readers.
To take up the offer either click the MF banner you should find somewhere on this page, or cut and paste this link into your browser and you can sign up online:

Terms and conditions obviously apply
Many of you enjoy the cheap advfn toplists bronze deal through me as do many of you with the cheap level 2. However many of you say you want a half-way house to include real-time share prices always on.
So I'm pleased to announce I've managed to seal a new deal with Advfn for its "Silver" service - that's always on real-time share prices for a good saving (Bronze toplists etc are included in this).
The deal is via me you can save £30 for your first year by paying just £138.06 inc vat via me instead of £167.47.
Just mail me for full details if you'd like it with "silver" in the subject line.
They've just re-published "The Zulu Principle" by Jim Slater who's written a 2008 update at the beginning.
This is a brilliant classic book. Reading this is a real pleasure and it was a great idea to republish.
Jim believes like I do the best gains can come from smaller stocks and in an easy to read style takes you through how to evaluate smaller companies that are about to become bigger ones - he uses some excellent examples.
Really this is a must read for all more longer-term investors or anyone looking to grow their money... a number of you have also written to me about this book and praising it.
Here is the link to buy it:

Here's a very topical one: The Little Book of Bull Moves in Bear Markets by Peter Schiff.
The book is all about how to keep portfolios up in a down market. He focusses a lot on how to play commodities and win with some sensible advice especially on natural resources and precious metals. He is very much a realist and there is no rubbish here: some straight talking and some interesting strategies.
Everyone who invests should think seriously about keeping portfolios up in bad times so this book should be read.
Well worth picking up at this link:

I've had heaps and heaps of praise from many of you regarding The Financial Spreadbetting book.
The book really seems to have helped a lot of you understand spreadbetting a lot more than you did. You say it's really helped you with ideas too. The writer deserves commendation. With the ability to go short so important in these volatile markets, it's a must read. To order click this link... http://books.global-investor.com/books/23307.htm?ginPtrCode=10453
Several people have asked me for a recommendation on a book which shows how to study accounts in a reasonably easy way. The one I like the most is http://books.global-investor.com/books/15717.htm?ginPtrCode=10453 by Robert Leach. Ten crunch questions to ask before buying any company.
It' s a decent easy-to-read book with several key chapters and it's highly recommended. It's one I keep and dip into from time to time. To order, click this link... http://books.global-investor.com/books/15717.htm?ginPtrCode=10453
The best book on charting and easiest read on the subject is http://books.global-investor.com/books/15618.htm?ginPtrCode=10453 by Alistair Blair. Click here -> http://books.global-investor.com/books/15618.htm?ginPtrCode=10453
Another good one is the second edition of http://books.global-investor.com/books/23792.htm?ginPtrCode=10453 by Peter Temple. Included in this one is how to use spreadbetting, CFD's warrants and trackers to reduce risk. And there are some decent trading strategies too.
This is an excellent book for new investors and also experienced ones. It explains all the things you may not be sure about in the markets and will explain the tools that are there. To order The Investors Toolbox by Peter Temple (new edition) click the following link for delivery in 24 hours... http://books.global-investor.com/books/23792.htm?ginPtrCode=10453

Naked Trader Seminar Latest News

****HAPPY NEW YEAR JANUARY 15TH SEMINAR BOOKING NOW OPEN**
(NOVEMBER 27TH NOW SOLD OUT)
Fancy spending a day with me, learning all the ways I have learned over the years to find good shares and play the markets? Well, you can at one of my seminars!
Booking is now open for the next Naked Trader seminar on Friday January 15th
Price is £495 plus 15% vat. However right now there is an early booking discount!
That includes three course lunch, coffees, snacks etc. And most importantly it covers choc bars and fruit gums too.
The seminar is mainly aimed at beginners and dabblers though improvers are welcome too.
Topics covered using live market feeds all day include: Market psychology, level 2 - a simple guide to how to use it for better timing; how to value companies; finding companies that are about to rise. I will also cover techniques for handling events such as the recent meltdown and volatility.
Spreadbetting: How to use it to gain an edge and go short. Market makers - how they work and how to beat them; how to stop losing money and make it instead and plenty more.
How to plan trade entries and exits - how to research companies and understand reports, plus all those niggly questions you always wanted to ask. How to set stop losses and targets. Charts and how to use them.
Also covered: Market maker tricks: How to spot tree shakes and use them in your favour, How to tell when NOT to buy a share. I use live ADVFN all day with lots of level 2 and looks at all kind of live market data.
The idea behind the seminar is SIMPLICITY. I don't use jargon or fancy words - everything is in PLAIN ENGLISH! No question is too stupid and the event is held in a friendly relaxed and supportive environment.
The idea is you will come away from the event I hope a wise and better investor with lots of new ideas. I try and translate complex topics into easy bite size pieces. I also aim for it to be entertaining as well as instructive.
If you are interested please e-mail me at robbiethetrader@aol.com with "New Year seminar interested" in the subject line and I will send you full details of the event including comments from those who have come to previous seminars and you can then decide whether you would like to come. See you there!
One seminar attendee Clare wanted to write a testimonial about her experiences at the seminar which follows now!
"I've just come back buzzing from one of Robbie's seminars. What a day! He's just brilliant, and manages to pack an awful lot into one day, and with his enthusiastic and humorous delivery the day just flies by. There are no gimmicks, no sell, no "˜get-rich-quick' promises, just his own solid, sound approach which he has learnt over the years and which works.
He shows you how to minimise the risks and maximise the profits and points out the banana skins on the way. Where the seminar really comes into its own is when he teaches using live level 2. Hearing him talk through his thought processes and reasoning is invaluable, and really brings home everything from the book. He has endless patience answering peoples' questions, and really seems to care that everybody understands.
On top of that, you meet some really nice like minded people and swap e mail addresses, you're plied with
chocolates and coffee all day, have a great lunch and spend the evening getting tiddled with Robbie in the
bar afterwards! You might even get to see the amazing crocodile boots . . . .
Don't worry about the cost, it's easily worth it, and you'll soon make it back with your new-found investment skills, and in what you're no longer losing. If you're thinking of going along to his next seminar, whether you're a novice or an experienced trader, don't hesitate ""just go!
Thanks Clare, did you want the tenner in cash, or will a cheque do?

£100 Tradefair offer

I've started using Tradefair for spreadbetting - I like the auto generated stop losses which help to maintain discipline and that's good for beginners I think. And exclusively for Naked Trader readers they upped the offer to £100 credit.
So there's now a £100 credit on offer for anyone opening an account via me. You get that after 2 spreadbets (terms and conditions apply)

Naked Rambling

This useless government is in its last few months thank goodness. Can't wait to see the back of Brown and Mandleson.
A professional burglar has had his sentence cut for injutires received at the hands of the homeowner he was robbing. He claimed he got the injuries "while at work".
I think anyone who breaks into someone's house deserves every injury they get. Homeowners are now worried they're the ones that might end up in trouble.
I think anyone who is found guilty of breaking in to houses and stealing should instead of being sent to prison be given six of the best with a cane daily for a week. Bet they wouldn't do it again and it will free up the prisons!
Main storylines for this Xmas's soap operas are to be based on .. murder, blackmail, divorce and incest.
How lovely. No wonder this country continues to go downhill and how glad I am I don't waste time watching any of them.
I won't be here to see the finale of "The Restaurant" - but poor old Raymond must be disappointed - the three finalists are all equally terrible and there is no way he'd want to be in business with any of them.
It does go to show how tough the restaurant business is and my advice is if you're thinking of starting one: Don't! There are much easier ways to make money.
I suspect whoever wins will be quietly dropped by Raymond a little while after the TV cameras are switched off because whoever wins will lose him money and give him a giant headache.
If you're a Curb fan don't miss the finale which I have already seen (don't ask how!) - it's brilliant, should be on More 4 in a couple of weeks.
And if you missed The Thick of It you are in for a treat - get watching it on I Player now. A masterpiece.
I told you the Amanda Holden sit com about a circus would be terrible didn't I. I lasted four minutes and assume the rest of it was typical UK comedy drivel.
I'll be back with more ranting and raving in the new year ... as long as Big Brother lets me of course....

If you press "Sports" there is a preview of the weekend's sports betting action and a look at the weekend games.
Get to grips with sports spread betting by opening an account with Sporting Index. . Click the link below to find out more.
http://www.sportingindex.com/?tpid=6755
Do remember if you do bet you ought to treat sports spreadbetting as entertainment - and expect to lose! Also with spreadbetting work out what your max loss could be and make sure you can afford it! In other words if you say backed the favourite at 15 for a fiver and they come nowhere your max loss is £75.

Thank you so much for a really, really useful and interesting day on Friday. My eyeballs were falling out and brain seeping from my ears by the time I staggered out at about 8:30. I don't know where you get the stamina from since you were doing all the talking all day.
You are incredibly generous with your knowledge and expertise and I hope I can do justice with all the information you provided. You probably know this already but your style of sharing information is really accessible and understandable for ordinary people who want to break out of what they are doing.

I hope you continue to have fun with what you're doing and enjoy your time with your young boy.

Thanks Richard - I'm sure "well done Robbie" mails probably are a bit grating - but thanks to all of you who came for the feedback which this mail kind of represents.

From one parent to another with children of similar ages I thought I'd run an issue past you. My daughter Lotty (started schools this year) has been starting to learn French. I think it would be much better for her (and ultimately UK economy) if she was learning Spanish.

Chinese would be more useful but it's difficult to learn and afterall we are Europeans. Spanish is a more widely spoken language than French, developing countries such as South America, Mexico etc.. speak Spanish, Britain is in the service industry these days and going forward so learning a very useful foreign language is key for children.

Out with french and in with Spanish. I emailed David Cameron and suggested it to him a few weeks ago- no reply as yet. What do you think? Most parents don't think it's a concern which is fine I suppose.

Simon I tend to agree but you could equally argue Polish could be handy! Spanish is spoken more widely - indeed Christopher has French lessons. You wonder at an age where kids can learn fast whether they could do both. There also seem to be a number of bi-lingual kids at his school where the parents already speak another language. I just feel bad I only speak English and a bit of rubbish French. How lazy is that?

I really enjoyed your seminar . Your seminar did what it said on the

Thanks Vadide, I do try and deliver and glad you felt it was a useful day. i really enjoyed this one - you lot in the audience were terrific!

I have just finished reading your book The Naked Trader. I bought it in a bookshop, I at WH Smith's at Monk's Cross Retail Park in York, where I live. I have to say that it was worth every penny. It is very informative AND entertaining. So thank you for writing it.

I have been trading on and off for the past 12 years ( I'm 43 years old). The biggest satisfaction I got with reading your book was that it confirmed to me what I was doing right, and also what I was doing wrong. Thankfully, I was doing more things right than wrong. Of course I learned the hard way (or the expensive way) over the years. The horror stories in your book were interesting, because anyone who has traded for long enough will have made the same classic errors. It really made me giggle. It's like watching someone trip and fall flat on their behind. It's not really funny when you stop to think about it because one can really get hurt... but you can't help but laugh when it happens, especially because you've been there yourself. I think that even if you're a seasoned trader, reading The Naked Trader is a MUST READ. You'll learn a thing or two and have a good laugh
Thanks Jimmy, I love the stories true and they are all real!!

Markets

Well as it's the last market update for the year when I next update here in January we will know whether the infamous Santa Claus rally happened or not.
As I'm heading off for my hols I'm not in a buying mood right now but happy with what I have. However I have been waiting to get some Afren (AFR) inside my ISA to go alongside the spreadbets in the early 80s and got 5,000 this lunchtime at 91.4. Target 120 stop 80. A share I've been with in my SIPP since 20p - it is a risky oil stock but rewards could still be there and it's going straight into the FTSE 250 after going onto the main market from AIM.
Well, what a year! It's been my best year ever on the markets and I've made nearly £200,000 personally.
It started off gloomily with the banks crisis still large. But I decided to buy at the highest point of fear and it paid off handsomely in 2009.
In fact if I was to pick out one piece of knowledge from the year it is indeed to buy at the peak of fear and sell at the peak of confidence. Or at least somewhere near the two.
Some huge individual profits and some massive winners all year. Some losses too, of course, but the winning trades were in the thousands and the losers in the low hundreds.
I'm very happy about this as it's what I want to achieve - small losses and big winners.
So winners of the year were many and plentiful. I near five-timed my money on Barclays, and six timed in my sipp on Pendragon.
Treblers and doublers abounded. Best treblers included Heritage, Dragon Oil, Petrofac, Alterian, and XP Power.
£10,000 or more profits from Heritage, £7,000 plus on Alterian. Dragon oil is up nearly £7,000 with maybe a bit more in the locker.
Doublers: Microgen doubled from my live seminar buy and a huge dividend to boot and over £6,000 profits. Other doublers included Chime which performed really well for a great profit. Dialight is proving a nice winner and that could go really well next year as it's a bit under the radar. A director has just splashed out a tidy sum on some shares.
Spirent has done very well for me too and could be another good one for 2010. Recentish buy Dimension Data also looks solid.
Stinker of the year? Sadly there is always one! But this year it was more profits lost than a real loss which was Hardy where though profits were taken I lost half of them. Otherwise the biggest taken loss was £980 early in January which was Renold. After that Anite at £380. So for losers - well just a small number for a small number.
Some great profits from spreadbetting - Unite produced a gain of over £3,000, same with Charter, Bid prospect Nestor has yielded a fair few quid, and Unite scored with a massive £3,200 gain.
Some decent shorts went in too. Yell probably the pick backed down from 30 to 26 and then again for a more than £3,000 profit while some FTSE shorts closed out early in the year produced big time too. A couple of Wolseley shorts produced nice profits too though it wasn't a year to short.
Tons of brilliant dividends along the way this year too - with the biggest dividend of a few grand from Telecom Plus. Yet again this year dividends received should cover all costs and a profit on top.
Recent picks are all going pretty well. Photo Me is ahead of expectations so the Dec 9th statement will be interesting. RM has gone up solidly.
Bioquell is a big hope for big gains for me in 2010 and is already going nicely - Micro Focus also in a nice gain and could have a very good year. Visonic has been doing nicely and I'm hopeful of a bid for that one.
I hope 2010 is as good but it has to be said this is highly unlikely - I would think next year will be a year for picking the right stocks in the right sector and some shorting will pay off too - and timing will be crucial.
Whatever happens I know next year will be just as entertaining and interesting as this year, because for me, the beast that is the market is both frustrating and rewarding.
I hope most readers had a reasonable year and good luck to you all with your picking for 2010. While it won't be as easy as last year some good well-researched stock picking should still pay off.
And even if I just made a quarter of the profit of 2009, I will be perfectly happy.
I've been getting e-mails regarding my use of direct market access and who I use. I've tried a few and for me the easiest system for me is here:
http://www.igmarkets.co.uk/?QPID=1079&QPPID=1
Direct market access means you can place orders directly onto the order book bypassing brokers and market-makers with a chance to buy at the "sell" price. I would suggest you ensure you know what you're doing first but IG does provide much education with its "tradesense" educational tool which comes with it.
I also use its spreadbetting service too along with other firms like Tradefair because it now provides trailing stops which to me is a pretty sensible way of trading. Link is here: -
http://www.igindex.co.uk/?QPID=1078&QPPID=1
that also includes a pretty decent educational programme. As usual before opening accounts please read all the warnings on the sites. You can lose a lot of money if you're not careful so pay close attention to them and make sure you always understand what you are doing and what your potential losses are.

£100 Tradefair offer

I've also started using Tradefair for spreadbetting - I like the auto generated stop losses which help to maintain discipline and that's good for beginners I think. And exclusively for Naked Trader readers they upped the offer to £100 credit.
So there's now a £100 credit on offer for anyone opening an account via me. You get that after 2 spreadbets (terms and conditions apply).

Telecom Plus Offer

Want to quit the rat race? Try and start a new source of income so one day you can tell the boss to stuff it? You could do what I did to escape my grotty office job and become an independent distributor for the Utilities Discount Warehouse.
You get to sell great broadband, phone packages and energy to friends, relatives, contacts and anyone else you find and you get cash for each sale but more importantly you get a cut of their spend EVERY MONTH for as long as they are a customer!
It's called residual income and is a far better way to enjoy a ripe old age than relying on a pension. Because even after you stop selling the money STILL comes in!
I still get paid EVERY MONTH for sales I made back in 1999! Every time a customer uses broadband or the phone or switches on a light you get paid.
It's a great business and backed by a stock market company (Telecom Plus), a dedicated team of advisors.. and me to help you on your way!
Not only do you get paid out every month for each customer you can take on distributors. encourage them like I do and get paid on their sales as well.
One day, say you could made redundant, needed a year off or wanted to retire early can you imagine what joy it is to have the regular income coming in. It's wonderful.
You have to work at it, but if you do genuine repeat wealth could be yours. I did it. You can too. For full details, why not email me at robbiethetrader@aol.com.
An overview is also available at http://www.telecomplus.org.uk/fabdeal you can sign up directly there but do tell me!

Trade tables follow! Trades are current open and recently closed trades. Closed trades feature the closing price and the amount I won or lost. All others are open. Trades get updated a little later than the narrative. Trading costs are ignored, however I also do not add in dividend payments and with the kinds of companies I buy, dividends tend to equal or outweigh costs. Spread rollovers ignored for web purposes. Tables as accurate as poss however a mistake or two can creep in and very occasionally if I forgot I sold or bought something it will be added at a later time.
Trades first reported Weds and Fri afternoons under "Markets" section.. afraid I can't do live trades as that would turn me into a tipster and I'd have to be regulated!
