Half-term week has been a good laugh and we've enjoyed seeing more of Christopher.
Although it means again, I am writing this from the depths of a hell hole of a kids play centre. Oh, the noise, imagine 200 kids screaming at once ... for hours!
Still, at least I can sit on my laptop here while he runs around and has fun with some friends.
He runs up to me every 15 mins asking for whatever vile colourful salt-sugar combination thing in the vending machine he fancies next. I've not cracked yet but he's cranking up the pressure.
They're all collecting dinosaur cards from a machine too, £1 a go, the grab a prize machine is £2 and indeed this whole place is designed to relieve parents of as much as possible.
Let's see, £12 to get in, £10 for parking, £15 for salt/sugar combos.. etc. Good business, if it floats I am buying shares.

Well sod them - I have my laptop plugged in by disconnecting one of their salt-sugar dispensing machines and plugging my laptop in instead. No-one has noticed yet and the punters just think it's out of order.
The things I have to do to bring you lot an update. And are you grateful? No. How do you think these updates appear - by magic? Eh?
One problem with half term is more Christopher has meant less sleep and myself and Mrs NT are totally knackered!
He'll be five next month (where did the time go?) and he has reached a milestone giving up his comfort blanket for the first time - this was his brave decision.
But he's finding it harder to sleep without it and been getting up at 2am and then 6am like a live wire.
I've been told to hide blankie and I caught myself looking at it today and feeling a bit sad that he's growing up (as well as happy). weird mixed emotions I guess every parent goes through.
We're off to visit friends in the country this weekend so hopefully he isn't going to wake them up overnight.
He hardly ever watches TV but his fave now is Tom and Jerry. The aged cat has noticed this and carefully stays right out of his way in case he tries to practise some of Jerry's moves..
Yesterday we went to the circus! Well, the Moscow State Circus!!
And it was brilliant! No animals involved, just humans leaping, bounding, balancing and shooting arrows. And of course a clown or two!
Such amazing skill and some incredible precision - one foot wrong and there could be serious injury but of course that doesn't happen..
Christopher and his friend really enjoyed it.
I got picked on by a clown (don't get ringside seats).
He held a bottle of water over my head.
Given I was feeling a bit tired and slightly grumpy I very nearly did an Alan Partridge and considered grabbing the bottle and hurling it across the stage.

Or indeed ramming it somewhere uncomfortable but instead of course I didn't and he emptied some water over me.
Blimey that was funny... you ... clown! You. Outside the tent now..

They've just re-published "The Zulu Principle" by Jim Slater who's written a 2008 update at the beginning.
This is a brilliant classic book. Reading this is a real pleasure and it was a great idea to republish.
Jim believes like I do the best gains can come from smaller stocks and in an easy to read style takes you through how to evaluate smaller companies that are about to become bigger ones - he uses some excellent examples.
Really this is a must read for all more longer-term investors or anyone looking to grow their money... a number of you have also written to me about this book and praising it.

Here's a very topical one: The Little Book of Bull Moves in Bear Markets by Peter Schiff.
The book is all about how to keep portfolios up in a down market. He focusses a lot on how to play commodities and win with some sensible advice especially on natural resources and precious metals. He is very much a realist and there is no rubbish here: some straight talking and some interesting strategies.
Everyone who invests should think seriously about keeping portfolios up in bad times so this book should be read.

I'm not sure where to begin! As a parent you can't play with your own children in the playground!!

Our French host makes a nice change from Gordon Ramsay - I can't even imagine what Ramsay would have said about some of the dishes but I'm sure nearly all of them would have started with an F.

Do remember if you do bet you ought to treat sports spreadbetting as entertainment - and expect to lose! Also with spreadbetting work out what your max loss could be and make sure you can afford it! It's the hardest thing to know what to do when the market gets volatile. It's so easy to sell at the worst time or buy at the worst time.. or both. Up one day down the next - one set of economic stats pulling it this way, another that way...
Even harder for anyone who has literally just started. It's one of those pivotal moments where no-one's really sure whether we came up too quick and we're overvalued, or whether it's about right now, or whether the recession is over and bigger gains are to come, or whether it's all cobblers and about to collapse again.
I really wish I knew but as I don't I'm just follow what's going on, be a little cautious, try and hang onto the good stuff, cut the more risky things.
For me personally I already made more money this year than I could have possibly imagined at the start and therefore while I might have to give a bit of profit back I don't want to give a lot of it back.
One I haven't been in for a long time but made a lot of money on a few years ago is tech company CSR (CSR) and I bought 1,000 at 433p early doors this morning and a tenner on the spreads too. I remember trebling my money on this from 400 ish to 1200 ish.
While 1200ish sadly looks a pipedream this time round my thoughts are there is some upside to this now. It's diversified into new businesses and bought some too. Promising. Target 500 stop 420.
I've decided to nip back into the riskish Styles and Wood (STY) gamble again because it's back close to the rights issue price and went in for 10,000 shares at 26.8 yesterday. It's risky because this shop fitting outfit had been hit badly but at this price I'm happy to take the risk. I made a fair amount out of this one last time. I'd be out fast if it dipped and the risk here is always that there might be another unpleasant statement - so for naked traders only and definitely not for widows and orphans.

However the upside could be big and I'm looking for a possible 40-50% profit here so for me it is worth the risk. Target 40 stop 24. I also note with Styles that the spread looks big but it is easy to buy at much reduced prices usually.
Nestor Heathcare (NSR) showed it was going the right way with its statement this morning - already sitting pretty with a big profit on these from 30p on the spreads and I topped up with a normal trade early doors this morning getting 10,000 - 5,000 at 45.75 and 5,000 at 46.5. Target 55 stop 41. Plenty of buying coming in and hopefully plenty more upside.
Well, the big moment was yesterday at 12.30pm. Why? It was the GDP figures announcement - all eyes were on this because it was going to move the market one way or another. Everyone and his dog was waiting for them and it was important for me.
Lucky for me it was before I was due at the circus at 3pm so I sat there, spreadbet accounts at the ready to close out the shorts in case...
In case.. the figures were all right and they were!! Afraid I wasn't quite fastest finger first but as I saw the index shooting up I very calmly closed out all the shorts I put on earlier in the week. Calm but firm. Just like my hero, Mr Spock. He would have been proud of me.
Of course if I had closed them before the figures I would have made more, but then the figures could have been awful and send the markets into meltdown so it was worth losing a few points first to find out.
So I closed the shorts as follows:
T. Perkins at 772 for a profit of £270, Wolseley at 1305 for a profit of £590, the FTSE short at 5105 for a profit of £572 and Yell at 45 for a profit of £600.
Finally SUK2 went at 7132.7 to bank a profit of £72.
Which makes a combined quickfire shorts profit of £2,104. (Would have been nearer £3k earlier!)
Sadly for me it looks like I should have stayed with those shorts as today the markets as I write are heading downwards again. Hence the Arrrghhhh comment above! In fact in hindsight if I had stayed with them it would have been a better move. Hah! So much for being Mr Spock.
On the bright side at least these are banked profits! And I guess there will be another chance to short - next time may stay in them longer for much bigger profits.
Elsewhere an AGM statement from Photo Me yesterday was sound enough and shows the recent rise is justified especially with debt on the way down. Shares are responding postively and I wish I had not topsliced now - still, I do have a reasonable amount and a nice profit so far.
Star share must be Chime where I've now more than doubled and it just keeps going.. strongly over 200 now and still holds well in the melee.
Small oil stock Aminex holds well and is even up a bit in the dodgy market after its promising drilling report.

Batm produced a very positive statement and even though they are slightly down still from my buying price it still looks like a future winner.
Still a good profit in Creston but it has slipped a bit and I am looking for a top up if there is any further weakness.
Centamin Egypt is doing all right, keeps threatening to break the 130 and it's listing on the main market next week.
Also holding ok today is Eaga which continues to look underrated and could easily swing up to the 200 area. Spirent and Dimension both add decent amounts today.
Int Tel Sys is holding onto its recent huge rise well. Recent top up Microgen, Alterian, Dialight and Dimension Data all hold pretty firm in the poor conditions. Profits in Alterian around £7,000.
More than trebler Dragon Oil holds onto good recent gains well giving profit of over £12,000 - and considering other oil stocks are weak, a good performance. Doubler/trebler Petrofac has been sold off but given the prices I'm in at I'll hold. Any move below 900 and I shall get in again.
BTG Group sustains its recent rise well.
The next week will doubtless be very interesting - anyone getting on the right side of any move could be in the money..

Direct market access means you can place orders directly onto the order book bypassing brokers and market-makers with a chance to buy at the "sell" price. I would suggest you ensure you know what you're doing first but IG does provide much education with its "tradesense" educational tool which comes with it.

Trade tables follow! Trades are current open and recently closed trades. Closed trades feature the closing price and the amount I won or lost. All others are open. Trades get updated a little later than the narrative. Trading costs are ignored, however I also do not add in dividend payments and with the kinds of companies I buy, dividends tend to equal or outweigh costs. Spread rollovers ignored for web purposes. Tables as accurate as poss however a mistake or two can creep in and very occasionally if I forgot I sold or bought something it will be added at a later time.
Trades first reported Weds and Fri afternoons under "Markets" section.. afraid I can't do live trades as that would turn me into a tipster and I'd have to be regulated!
