On the Saturday after the seminar I woke up around 9am and wondered what had hit me.. why a headache and why do I feel rough?
Oh yes a seminar with people throwing questions at me for 16 hours! No wonder my head hurts! So I put the kettle on and popped some bread into my trusty £7.99 toaster.
This might sound odd when breakfast is included in the room but no money gets you hot toast in your room in a hotel.

Toast HAS to be eaten hot rightaway. No point otherwise I might as well eat rubber. And I like Tescos Premium marmalade.
I opened the curtains - the window has a view of Heathrow Airport and the car park. How odd. There are quite a number of blokes standing around the car park. What are they doing?
Then I looked a bit more closely. They had binoculars. I looked at the airport - planes were all lining up to take off.
Planespotters!!
Now while it's fun to watch planes taking off for oooh, 3 minutes, that's about it.
After the toast I watched them some more. They are fascinating. Mainly in twos. Yes, plenty of anoracks too. Some look a little odd. Some normal.
In fact, each pair had one normal and one weird looking. Maybe it's like the fat girl/thin girl holiday mates thing.
Just then I thought some binoculars could come in handy then I realised I was starting a new organisation. Planespotters spotting!
I sat there for a while wondering why. I can get bird watching. That could be good, nature and all that.
But planes? It's BA, BA, BA then Virgin, BA, Swizzair, BA, Lufthansa, BA, BA..
And all the planes are virtually identical. Why would you want spend hours spotting them? Beats me.

Maybe they look at the numbers or something.
The hotel is trying to cash in on this to fill weekend rooms. On the way down in the lift was a big poster advertising "Planespotters Weekends!"

Yes... suckers... watch the planes from the car park and your room, have dinner too all for (whatever price they might bite at).
Driving out of the hotel there were still more. And yes, definitely normal and weird together and one or two threesomes (weird, normal, weird).
I guess I better hope no plane spotters read this site. Especially the weird ones.

We're supposed to be taking off in December for South Africa with BA. We just hope they're not going to strike on our departure date..
It's my birthday next Friday and guess what I am collecting next Friday to make myself feel really good on my birthday?
A pair of reading glasses. My very first pair. Yes I'm getting to the age where things start to drop off or go wrong.

Teeth just been fixed, now eyes. I'm trying not to think of the next thing. No, not that... not yet!!!
They were good at Specsavers though. Good testing. Oh I bought two glasses as I'm bound to sit on one and smash them. Or Christopher will flush them down the loo.

Talking of eyes they are getting very sore because the number of emails to me is nearly reaching saturation point and I'm struggling! I'm getting 100s which is lovely in a way but killing me in another.
The main problem is the length of some of them, indeed some run to the length of novels, so, please, help save my eyes and please keep mails to under 150 words.. you can do it! It's close to the stage where I am going to have to say I will answer all mails but those over 200 words will get deleted. Keep them short and sweet, please!!

I can hardly believe Christopher is really reading some short sentences. it seems like yesterday I was feeding him from a bottle and all he could say was goo goo.

They've just re-published "The Zulu Principle" by Jim Slater who's written a 2008 update at the beginning.
This is a brilliant classic book. Reading this is a real pleasure and it was a great idea to republish.
Jim believes like I do the best gains can come from smaller stocks and in an easy to read style takes you through how to evaluate smaller companies that are about to become bigger ones - he uses some excellent examples.
Really this is a must read for all more longer-term investors or anyone looking to grow their money... a number of you have also written to me about this book and praising it.

Here's a very topical one: The Little Book of Bull Moves in Bear Markets by Peter Schiff.
The book is all about how to keep portfolios up in a down market. He focusses a lot on how to play commodities and win with some sensible advice especially on natural resources and precious metals. He is very much a realist and there is no rubbish here: some straight talking and some interesting strategies.
Everyone who invests should think seriously about keeping portfolios up in bad times so this book should be read.

You have to love the words politicians use.
New speaker John Bercoe's excuse after overclaiming £1,000 was it was an "accidental overclaim".
Hmm, now if I told the taxman that I'd not only have to pay back the £1,000 but I bet I would also be fined at least another £500.. for the "accident".
Another word they use is "oversight".
Sickening MPs Question Time I thought. The big elephant in the room was expenses. How did they prevent it from being discussed? Stuck resolutely to the war. Not because they care much but it made the time go.
If ever there was a good time for an election it would be right now.

But of course power crazy Brown will hold on till the very last minute. It is time Governments were forced to call an election every 4 years and not 5. Come to think of it, how about 3?
Do you buy the reasons Brown tells us we are at war? No, me neither. How much longer should we allow what often are teenagers to die in this futile battle?
Goldman Sachs is handing out billions in bonuses -most getting at least half a mill.
Do they deserve it? No. £50k? Fine. Enough! You'd have thought this year they would be a bit more temperate but no chance.
Where are the big ideas from any of the parties? There aren't any.
Here are some of mine: Flat tax rate of 30% (first 8k free) . Employers incentivised, loads of jobs would be created and the economy boosted - the rich would return and spend their money and I bet the tax take rises as people stop bothering to evade their taxes.
Legalise soft drugs and prostitution - prohibition has never worked - this would raise money and cut a lot of crime. Scrap all red tape.

Cut paperwork for Police and get them out again. Make all prisoners work. Make all jargon and gobbledegook illegal! All legal documents must be a max of 200 words!

Let's get to the point with everything and stop paying penpushers to write acres of drivel that no-one understands.
Traffic wardens to be armed with poop scoops - their job is npw to pick up dog poo as well as hand out tickets. Ban clamping which is legalised robbery. Elections must be held every 3 years in May. I could think of a lot more but I'm tired now and need some tea.

Do remember if you do bet you ought to treat sports spreadbetting as entertainment - and expect to lose! Also with spreadbetting work out what your max loss could be and make sure you can afford it! In other words if you say backed the favourite at 15 for a fiver and they come nowhere your max loss is £75.

Just read your latest update in which you mention the Vetting and Barring scheme, covering children/vulnerable adults and volunteers and your opposition to it. I couldn't agree more and I am becoming increasingly concerned at the Stasi like nature of this government. Are you also aware that the government are now proposing that anybody who wants to rent a room out in their own home, even if this is to a friend will have to register on a national database. Incredible.. As a former landlord and tenant, I like to think that I can see both sides of the landlord/tenant arguments but I fail to see what a database will achieve other than reduce the amount of accommodation on offer. As I understand it, landlords won't have to be vetted before they sign up so I can't see how it will benefit the tenant. Far better to have a database of landlords who have already been convicted of bad management coupled with a database of bad tenants. I am quite sure that this control freak government will soon be trying to attend our children's birthday parties with a clipboard to ensure the right food is being served and that there is the right ethnic mix etc etc. It really is time that people stood up and said enough is enough.
I have been discussing the Vetting scheme with my partner's mother who is a former teacher and in favour of the scheme. She says it won't apply to informal arrangements between parents but only to a situation where, for example, a parent is used regularly by the school to perhaps drive children to events. She mentioned an example of where a parent who did this at her school turned out to have been banned from driving and another one was caught speeding on a couple of occasions. I suppose there is some merit in her argument but I still consider that (as usual) the government are using a sledgehammer to crack a nut.
I have no intention of registering either so I guess when the time comes, I will probably be joining you in Wormwood Scrubs - as long as I can bring in my laptop and they have internet access, I don't mind.

Blimey, 10,000 on the Dow. Who would have thought it? Only thing is at this level one would expect quite a few "goes" for it to convincingly stay above the magic number.
Well after my burst of post seminar buying activity I've been a bit quiet which is fine There is no need to trade everyday. In fact those that do are more likely to lose money!
What I have done is some topping up with some recent buys looking so nice I got greedy and got more.
I bought Microgen (MCGN) back in June at 59, it rose nicely to the mid 70s but has flatlined recently. However, very interested to see it is suddenly on the way up again with some quite nice buying coming in so I have topped up in what looks like a lovely one adding a further 5,000 at 80. A statement is due soon so here's hoping! Target 100 stop 72.
I added more Creston (CRE) off the back of a very strong level 2 getting a further 5,000 a bit higher than my first buy at 79.5. Wish I'd gone even heavier than that because it looks like it is currently being rerated and as I write is now at 90! Fundamental reasons for the original buy in the last report.
I also bought some more Eaga (EAGA) normally as well as on the spreads getting 3,000 at 143 at the "sell" price using DMA. Again fully discussed last time.
I sold Optos at 87 for a very nice profit of £3,817. My reasoning is simply that it's tried a few times but can't shift through the 90 even in up markets so this seems a good time to say goodbye and thank you for a lovely profit!
Recent buys are going all right. Creston and Int Tel Sys especially. Centamin down a little but with patience I think it will be fine.
Dialight and Dimension Data both hanging on well and Spirent continues to climb and a huge gain on that one now as it hits 95. Photo Me is now into profit.
The big buy orders in Hardy Oil continue and it's looking very exciting and now doubled on two of the holdings.
Top up Telecom Plus continues to move higher, Trebler Alterian holds onto recent gains nicely and indeed rises more. Profits knocking on £7,000 now.
Dragon Oil moves much higher today giving me a massive profit of over £12,000 - Doubler/trebler Petrofac still looks lovely as it flirts with the 1000 level.
BTG Group and that's paying off with a huge profit now - it is up and over 200 today .
XP Power is now over 300p so a lovely little profit there. Heritage remains a lovely trebler - over £10,000 profits and looks like it's trying to get through the sticky 550 area.
So things continue to be good. Shorters continue to try and find the turning point and get burned in the process. I am happy to wait and follow only when a new downtrend really becomes established, if it does - because there could still be some upside and much depends on companies reporting in the States next week.
However, if I can, I still want to be brave and run the good winners.

Direct market access means you can place orders directly onto the order book bypassing brokers and market-makers with a chance to buy at the "sell" price. I would suggest you ensure you know what you're doing first but IG does provide much education with its "tradesense" educational tool which comes with it.

Trade tables follow! Trades are current open and recently closed trades. Closed trades feature the closing price and the amount I won or lost. All others are open. Trades get updated a little later than the narrative. Trading costs are ignored, however I also do not add in dividend payments and with the kinds of companies I buy, dividends tend to equal or outweigh costs. Spread rollovers ignored for web purposes. Tables as accurate as poss however a mistake or two can creep in and very occasionally if I forgot I sold or bought something it will be added at a later time.
Trades first reported Weds and Fri afternoons under "Markets" section.. afraid I can't do live trades as that would turn me into a tipster and I'd have to be regulated!
