Not on yer bike
** My new book - about spreadbetting - has just been published, you can order it here:
http://books.global-investor.com/books/401334.htm?ginPtrCode=10453
Welcome to any new readers coming to the website from the new book, I would suggest you read the spreadbetting book in conjunction with Naked Trader, available here:

**
Despite the new government, I see the health and safety idiots are still about.
Note pinned to tree: "Beware - falling conkers".
I wonder how much it cost the council tax payers for the busybody to pin the notice up.
I can see why shares in Halfords are going down.
I went to the local one to buy a bike.
Yes, even the really crap one I bought at £90 which didn't even have an gears and wasn't in the least bit cool has got stolen.
"Just give me the cheapest," I said to the salesmen. "Yes that one there will do.. I'll pay cash."
"Ah," said the salesman. "I'm afraid I can't let you have a bike rightaway. Come back about the same time tomorrow..."
"Eh?" I said, fairly. "I'll take that one right now!"
"It's marketing," said the salesman.
"So, let me get this straight," I said. "You're a bike shop. I am holding cash and will buy that bike right now.
But you won't sell it to me because of 'Marketing'. The store closes in ten minutes, what sort of marketing do you need when I am definitely going to buy it right now?"
I know what was wrong. He was too damn lazy to make the sale and was eyeing up going home. If this was a bike shop he owned I bet that bike would have been mine rightaway.
"I'm sorry," he said. "Come back tomorrow."
"If you don't let me have the bike now I won't be coming back. I'll go to my local bike shop where it looks like I should have gone to in the first place..."
"It's the marketing you see," he insisted.
"Just don't go on The Apprentice," I said. "Because you know how fast you'd be fired."
You know what? A bike shop that won't sell a bike?
Sounds like a good short? I should have shorted Halfords the next day but forgot about it. I even said to Mrs NT when I got home: "Remind me to short Halfords".
Shares have sunk since then. Something is wrong there. And not a good statement yesterday. I think they ought to look at staff motivation.
On the other hand I bought Mulberry because Mrs NT had the Mulberry website up so often and also told me Mulberry service in its stores was amazing. Also, Mulberry boots and bags began to appear....
And after this was backed up by some ladies at the July seminar I bought Mulberry and the shares have nearly doubled! See, easy research!
We had to howl on watching a sketch on Harry Enfield's new show.
We used to own a cafe and employed a couple of Polish girls. Who were really brilliant. In fact we noticed after they arrived sales went up quite a lot.
We thought it was because of our brilliant business sense. However walking up the street close to the cafe one day I heard three blokes discussing the girls and which one they fancied the most.
Then over time I realised older blokes were sitting their with coffees trying to chat them up. Not because the coffee was so great. Shame, I thought it was.
One pensioner indeed offered one of them " a ride in his car to the country". (How we laughed)
In the Harry Enfield sketch the locals are buying coffees not because they want a coffee but because they have fantasies of getting dates with the girls.
In the sketch the girls just find it all rather amusing, take the money for the coffees and laugh off the offers of dates.
Which is exactly how it was at the cafe! We gradually got to know them and knew the customers' names.
"Watch out!" I'd say.. "Dave's coming up the street, quick, hide!"
One got so obsessed he came in twice a day. When the girl he liked wasn't there the brilliant thing is he couldn't really walk out.
"Usual coffee and cake?" I would ask - another fiver in the till!
There is a happy ending to this story. One of the girls did indeed find love with a customer - but of her own age - and I sometimes see her in the park.. pushing a pram....
Had a lovely meal out with some good friends. Actually he's my dentist. Which means obviously I can't drink any coke - coke and teeth? They don't mix!
It's a great restaurant called Hakkasan off Tottenham Court Road. If you come to London, go. Food is great and prices not too bad.
I decided it would be nice to bring my camera with me - after all I have lots of shots of Christopher but little else.
So I put the camera on the table ready to take some great pics.
Forgot all about it till we were just about to leave...
"Ok everyone, smile!" I said, reaching for the camera....
and trying to take a picture with...
a portable radio!
To be fair it's the same colour and size as my camera, honest!
An interesting email from a reader. The thrust of it was he was going to buy a share after doing a lot of research but then it went up 12% and he hadn't bought it yet. So he felt angry.
How does he stop/halt the feelings of anger?
Well, you have to take the emotion out of trading. Which isn't easy.
I suggested he should read this book.. by Jason Zweig
http://books.global-investor.com/books/256158.htm?ginPtrCode=10453
This is the one to read on psychology. Great read.
Thanks for the continued feedback on the seminar. I'm really glad to read some of you are already using some of the techniques I showed you.
Some of you appear delighted with one or two of the "tricks" I taught about timing and judged by the mails I'm delighted that you really did "get it"!!
Do remember which side of the order book is which! I hope if you all carry on using the tools I showed you, it ought to transform your trades.
Once again it was a pleasure to host the event and thanks for all those gin and tonics. Well, I think thanks - I wasn't so sure when I woke with such a sore head on Saturday!

Spreadbetting firm Tradefair Spreads has upped its offer exclusively to Naked Trader readers to a £100 credit. This offer is exclusive to me and not available anywhere else...
I've been using them for a few weeks to check that I'm happy with the service. As you know I don't take ads or allow referrals on the site unless it's a company I've used and I feel confident about.
What I like about it is it's easy to use, spreads are surprisingly tight on the smaller companies and interestingly an automated stop loss is applied to each trade - so beginners know what their max loss is from the outset.
Anyway they now offer a £100 credit as long as you deposit £100. You get the credit after you placed 5 trades (Terms and conditions apply)
If you'd like to apply for an account with Tradefair Spreads and get the freebie click this link:

The number of emails to me is nearly reaching saturation point and I'm struggling! I'm getting 100s which is lovely in a way but killing me in another.
The main problem is the length of some of them, indeed some run to the length of novels, so, please, help save my eyes and please keep mails to under 150 words.. you can do it! It's close to the stage where I am going to have to say I will answer all mails but those over 200 words will get deleted. Keep them short and sweet, please!!
Also, it's possible the answer you seek from me is already in FAQ's. And do remember I can't discuss individual shares with you as it would be classified as investment advice which I'm not authorised to give.
Many of you enjoy the cheap advfn toplists bronze deal through me as do many of you with the cheap level 2. However many of you say you want a half-way house to include real-time share prices always on.
So I'm pleased to announce I've managed to seal a new deal with Advfn for its "Silver" service - that's always on real-time share prices for a good saving (Bronze toplists etc are included in this).
The deal is via me you can save £30 for your first year by paying just £138.06 inc vat via me instead of £167.47.
Just mail me for full details if you'd like it with "silver" in the subject line.
They've just re-published "The Zulu Principle" by Jim Slater who's written a 2008 update at the beginning.
This is a brilliant classic book. Reading this is a real pleasure and it was a great idea to republish.
Jim believes like I do the best gains can come from smaller stocks and in an easy to read style takes you through how to evaluate smaller companies that are about to become bigger ones - he uses some excellent examples.
Really this is a must read for all more longer-term investors or anyone looking to grow their money... a number of you have also written to me about this book and praising it.
Here is the link to buy it:

Here's a very topical one: The Little Book of Bull Moves in Bear Markets by Peter Schiff.
The book is all about how to keep portfolios up in a down market. He focusses a lot on how to play commodities and win with some sensible advice especially on natural resources and precious metals. He is very much a realist and there is no rubbish here: some straight talking and some interesting strategies.
Everyone who invests should think seriously about keeping portfolios up in bad times so this book should be read.
Well worth picking up at this link:

Several people have asked me for a recommendation on a book which shows how to study accounts in a reasonably easy way. The one I like the most is http://books.global-investor.com/books/15717.htm?ginPtrCode=10453 by Robert Leach. Ten crunch questions to ask before buying any company.
It' s a decent easy-to-read book with several key chapters and it's highly recommended. It's one I keep and dip into from time to time. To order, click this link... http://books.global-investor.com/books/15717.htm?ginPtrCode=10453
The best book on charting and easiest read on the subject is http://books.global-investor.com/books/15618.htm?ginPtrCode=10453 by Alistair Blair. Click here -> http://books.global-investor.com/books/15618.htm?ginPtrCode=10453
Another good one is the second edition of http://books.global-investor.com/books/23792.htm?ginPtrCode=10453 by Peter Temple. Included in this one is how to use spreadbetting, CFD's warrants and trackers to reduce risk. And there are some decent trading strategies too.
This is an excellent book for new investors and also experienced ones. It explains all the things you may not be sure about in the markets and will explain the tools that are there. Naked Trader Seminar Latest News
(SEPTEMBER 24TH SEMINAR NOW SOLD OUT - SORRY)
Fancy spending a day with me, learning all the ways I have learned over the years to find good shares and play the markets? Well, you can at one of my seminars!
Booking is still open for the Naked Trader seminar on Friday Nov 26th.
Price is £495 plus vat. However right now there is a generous early bookers discount!
That includes three course lunch, coffees, snacks etc.
The seminar is mainly aimed at beginners and dabblers though improvers are welcome too.
Topics covered using live market feeds all day include: Market psychology, level 2 - a simple guide to how to use it for better timing; how to value companies; finding companies that are about to rise. I will also cover techniques for handling events such as the recent meltdown and volatility.
Spreadbetting: How to use it to gain an edge and go short. Market makers - how they work and how to beat them; how to stop losing money and make it instead and plenty more.
How to plan trade entries and exits - how to research companies and understand reports, plus all those niggly questions you always wanted to ask. How to set stop losses and targets. Charts and how to use them.
Also covered: Market maker tricks: How to spot tree shakes and use them in your favour, How to tell when NOT to buy a share. I use live ADVFN all day with lots of level 2 and looks at all kind of live market data.
The idea behind the seminar is SIMPLICITY. I don't use jargon or fancy words - everything is in PLAIN ENGLISH! No question is too stupid and the event is held in a friendly relaxed and supportive environment.
The idea is you will come away from the event I hope a wise and better investor with lots of new ideas. I try and translate complex topics into easy bite size pieces. I also aim for it to be entertaining as well as instructive.
If you are interested please e-mail me at robbiethetrader@aol.com with "seminar interested" in the subject line and I will send you full details of the event including comments from those who have come to previous seminars and you can then decide whether you would like to come. See you there!
One seminar attendee Clare wanted to write a testimonial about her experiences at the seminar which follows now!
"I've just come back buzzing from one of Robbie's seminars. What a day! He's just brilliant, and manages to pack an awful lot into one day, and with his enthusiastic and humorous delivery the day just flies by. There are no gimmicks, no sell, no "˜get-rich-quick' promises, just his own solid, sound approach which he has learnt over the years and which works.
He shows you how to minimise the risks and maximise the profits and points out the banana skins on the way. Where the seminar really comes into its own is when he teaches using live level 2. Hearing him talk through his thought processes and reasoning is invaluable, and really brings home everything from the book. He has endless patience answering peoples' questions, and really seems to care that everybody understands.
On top of that, you meet some really nice like minded people and swap e mail addresses, you're plied with
chocolates and coffee all day, have a great lunch and spend the evening getting tiddled with Robbie in the
bar afterwards! You might even get to see the amazing crocodile boots . . . .
Don't worry about the cost, it's easily worth it, and you'll soon make it back with your new-found investment skills, and in what you're no longer losing. If you're thinking of going along to his next seminar, whether you're a novice or an experienced trader, don't hesitate ""just go!
Thanks Clare, did you want the tenner in cash, or will a cheque do?

Naked Rambling
Good - dunno about you but had it with politicians - the lot of them. And if I hear another thing on the TV or radio about sodding child benefit I will scream really loudly. Oh and the Big Society.
Surely we should just do away with politicians and parties. Put Lord Sir A in charge of the country along with his henchmen. That should sort things out.
Talking Sir Lord, a great start to the Apprentice.
Sadly for the contestants it's the desperation that provides the entertainment - and of course the fact that most of them have ludicrous ideas about themselves.
One bloke even reckons he is a "brand".
Best quote of the day. "I hustled really hard ... for £14...."
I think Lord Sir Alan enjoyed the firing. This poor guy must be the most annoying ever. Always thinks he's right and superior.
The moment he almost had his feet up on the boardroom table was a classic and he was probably already history at that moment.
But - goodie - there are so many brilliantly rubbishy annoying pushy types that it should be lovely fun seeing them get their comeuppance.
Not sure about Karen Brady yet - I think we all miss her precdessessor.
But in the end it looks like it will be unmissable. Which irritating t
will be ejected next week?
Oh ps, dunno about you I was dying for a sausage afterwards. But we gorged on sausages the day after. Lovely.
I see the shadow cabinet is a load of Balls - well two of them anyway - Yvette and Ed. A real family affair.
Trouble is this family sees nothing wrong with spending lots of money on this country's credit card that already is way over its credit limit.
Mad Men was as good as usual. The tension between Don and his ex looks like building to a climax.. in bed before not too long I suspect. Just a guess!
The spreadbetting firm I use for sports betting is here:
Via this link Open a Sporting Index account, you can get £100 cash into your account, terms and conditions apply.
http://www.sportingindex.com/?tpid=6755
Do remember if you do bet you ought to treat sports spreadbetting as entertainment - and expect to lose! Also with spreadbetting work out what your max loss could be and make sure you can afford it! In other words if you say backed the favourite at 15 for a fiver and they come nowhere your max loss is £75.
Naked Mail
Not sure if you realise how great this quote of yours is:-
"...Good poker players are far more likely to make good traders than clever economist or accountants.... They don't realise trading is like a card game, it's you against others. Economics doesn't come into it"¦"
Oscar Wilde would've liked that one for himself. I hope you don't mind, I am now using it along side Warren Buffet's and George W's greatest one liners
Gosh well that's kind of you but I am no Oscar Wilde, or Warren B! I do believe it to be true, however!
Duane writes:
Wanted to say a big thank you to you and Mrs NT for an amazing day of learning and fun at your Septemnber seminar.
The way you explained the share trading from start to finish was understandable and really interesting, well worth the seminar fee!
It was great to hear such down to earth and honest assessment from a successful trader like yourself. The way you explained everything was good revision from your book and gave further insight into successful share trading.
I particularly liked your live trades and going through your accounts when you gave snippets of why you invested in certain shares and why you kept/dumped them. Also helpful was the way you searched for prospective shares and within minutes discounted them or put them on a short list for further examination and correct entry points. Amazing!
You could really tell that you loved doing what you do and your energy levels to keep going till 10pm was well....... I had to leave at 9pm I was shattered!
Thanks again Robbie I am keen to put into practice what you have taught me. Even though you make squillions from your trades and I am sure don't need to do the seminars for financial gain, but please keep doing those seminars for newbies like me!
Thanks Duane! Don't expect to be doing them foreever but very rewarding for me to help people so expect to carry on for a while longer.
Mike writes:
I would just like to thank you again for the great time at the follow up seminar and would like to report that thanks to your methods of teaching I have completely changed my investing style and since my first seminar a while back my fund is now nicely up which is a complete turn around from my day trading the FTSE days!
Mike glad to hear of continued success! It does take time to figure out what works for you. Some can make money day trading but it isn't for everyone and investing can be easier for some, including myself.
Terry writes:
Fantastic seminar.
I have always been sceptical of the public testaments you see on web sites
saying how great an event was. Now I'm one of those people!. I
genuinely believe that the tips and techniques as well as the overall
approach you demonstrated will radically improve my trading performance
Thanks Terry, well all the testaments are real but know what you mean and glad you feel it was worth it!
John writes:
Thanks for a great seminar last Friday, everyone I spoke to enjoyed it and marvelled at how you kept going so long; you certainly gave value for money.
If the seminar taught me anything it was how to trade in a more professional and detached manner. I realise up till now I was just playing at it.
Thank you once again for a fantastic day that will remain with me for the rest of my life.
Thanks John, though my wife sometimes complains I go on for too long.....

Markets
The markets were waiting for this lunchtimes figures from the US. Something thing about pay rolls in farms. Or was it bog rolls?
Don't ask me, I'm not an economist. Oooooh, what was going to happen? Well actually not that much as I write this just after it happened, the indices went down then up then down, I guess the Dow will decide it all later. Right now no-one seems to have the foggiest what to make of whatever the figures were.
A lot of traders have been caught out by shorting too early or trying too hard to guess any turn. I'm sticking in there for now, doesn't matter if I give up a bit of profit - again I'll trade what happens rather than what I can only guess might happen. For now though in the main steering clear of FTSE100 stocks because of the likely volatility,
I have treated myself to Treat (TET) getting 1,000 shares at 345 yesterday. They were really hard to get hold of. Couldn't get any online and had to use an old-fashioned thing called a "phone" to get them.
This one popped up on a screening at the last seminar. I thought the recent statements looked good but I thought it would stick around 325 till the results confirmed the company was now doing very well and I wasn't sure about buying.
I was wrong and yesterday it really started to motor. So I waded in and bought. I thought they looked cheap up to 400 on the last statement but there is also some caution that can this company's fortunes continue to climb? We shall see! Target 420 stop 320. The idea is a short hold till results an if results confirm good fortune I'll buy a few more or sell up.
Heritage Oil (HOIL) has been a brilliant buy - held all the way from 175 and got a 100p special dividend (which means the current price would be 100p more without).
I've been thinking of topping up on this future giant and it's been moving nicely the last couple of days so got a few on the spreads for a change, £15 at 325. Target 450, stop 300. It's moving up again today and for now seems little that might stop it from heading up to the 400 area initially although possibly 350 might be a barrier for a bit. I now know the reason for the rising price has been reported as positive drilling report on the way. Well that's what the papers say anyway.
However my timescale remains long-term on it so would expect to hold the spreadbet into next year and the longer-term hold too which was bought at 175.
Loads of huge profits still sitting there and it's a question of when to take them really.
Not really any statements to discuss... Afren completed its recent acquision which the market appears to like.
Oh hang on there is one! Mulberry produced some amazing results - well ahead of forecasts and amazingly since it came up at the July seminar it has nearly doubled making me a profit of near £3,000. The results caused the shares to surge nearly 20% !
So thanks for this one to - A) Mrs NT. Mulberry bags and boots appearing at home was a big buy signal and B) - thanks to the ladies at the July seminar for agreeing Mulberry was the hot place for the ladies to be.
Thank you girls! I am tempted to bank the profit but the figures look so good, I'll keep them. Go BAGS Go BOOTS! And even better, the Mulberry website is still on the recent history of Mrs NT's computer so good news!
The AA has raised its bid for Nestor to 100p - Nestor appear to be playing this very well! They now say kind of grudgingly that they will meet the AA again to discuss but 100p still undervalues the company. Looks like some good negotiating going on there - if I was going to bet on it I reckon they'll get it to 110p. Which is just fine. My profits currently are well over £20,000. Worth holding to see what happens.
Recent buys 4imprint and New India both go well. So do the shorts in Galliford, Savills and Ocado.
I wait to see if I bought Cape on a high or whether it'll keep going. If it's wrong entry I can get out with a small loss if needed.
Carclo seems to find it hard to put out, shall we say, enthusiastic statements! Its short update this week for this company was positively glowing! It's rising nicely now as perhaps the market starts to see the big potential here. I expect to see this one rocket later this year or early next. One of those undiscovered gems.
Xaar consolidates its recent big gains I bought this one at 164 a year and a half ago and it's now over a tenner with a profit of £13,000 plus. It goes to show if you can hold the good ones for a bit and resist the take profits temptation it can pay off big time!
In the same sector Volex has powered over 300 - a cracker too! Profits up and over £10,000 on what one, a lovely one. Today it tries to see if it can stay above 300p. Currently trying hard!
Recent top up Alternative Network is worth at least another 40p in my view. And that's without the bid potential where I see take out as high as 300p.
Supergroup has just about doubled since I first bought - it's coming back now - hard one to decide on because of the spread.
Microgen continues to look exciting and having doubled now hoping for the treble and it doesn't look far off - if as I suspect it will carry on being re rated as a tech stock it should head up to at least 120.
African Aura has rocketed in the last couple of days as well - indeed up had a bit of a shake but is on the way back and a quick star performer! Andor say they are ahead of expectations which is good news. The share price should continue back up as it looks like profit takers are nearly done. The Ocado short is delivering bigtime!
Photo Me continues a brilliant run - looks like it will shortly be a doubler - it's not sure currently in the 70s so it might take a while before a possible next step up. Sporting Bet has come back a touch but the idea is a longer-term play there, it should grow on acquisitions or get snapped up itself.
Recent buy The Vitec Group has managed to break up a bit. Patience should pay off! Gone ex dividend so a payment coming too. Pushing 500 at the moment and looks like it might get through
Recent top up Alterian is having a good go at holding above 200 and some nice buying there. Promethean gets a yellow card though as it's flirting around a stop loss. A tight one though so it's getting a bit of leeway before the red card comes out.
Ig keeps on rising. And Devro seems to be starting a new run up it got through 250 and now having a crack at 260. What a brilliant one this has been..
Dialight's amazing run continues and it seems to have conquered the 400 at last, closing above there a couple of times. Can it stay above 450 now? Shame about the wide spread though.
Lovely Petrofac has surged again heading for over 1400 and together with Enquest sees me sitting on profits way in excess of £20,000. Of course it's volatile but a strong uptrend remains intact.
Hyder climbs again after its excellent statement. - a bid still looks like it's in there for nothing!
Aggreko has seen a massive rise and it gets further bought every time it weakens - made a big amount here in a short time but I'm intending to stay with it. Some bid rumours have been floating about in the paper s but who knows? Spirent has doubled for me and there recent top up is in profit. It goes higher today.
I've been getting e-mails regarding my use of direct market access and who I use. I've tried a few and for me the easiest system for me is here:
http://www.igmarkets.co.uk/?QPID=1079&QPPID=1
Direct market access means you can place orders directly onto the order book bypassing brokers and market-makers with a chance to buy at the "sell" price. I would suggest you ensure you know what you're doing first but IG does provide much education with its "tradesense" educational tool which comes with it.
I also use its spreadbetting service too along with other firms like Tradefair because it now provides trailing stops which to me is a pretty sensible way of trading. Link is here: -
http://www.igindex.co.uk/?QPID=1078&QPPID=1
that also includes a pretty decent educational programme. As usual before opening accounts please read all the warnings on the sites. You can lose a lot of money if you're not careful so pay close attention to them and make sure you always understand what you are doing and what your potential losses are.

Telecom Plus Offer
You get to sell great broadband, phone packages and energy to friends, relatives, contacts and anyone else you find and you get cash for each sale but more importantly you get a cut of their spend EVERY MONTH for as long as they are a customer!
It's called residual income and is a far better way to enjoy a ripe old age than relying on a pension. Because even after you stop selling the money STILL comes in!
I still get paid EVERY MONTH for sales I made back in 1999! Every time a customer uses broadband or the phone or switches on a light you get paid.
It's a great business and backed by a stock market company (Telecom Plus), a dedicated team of advisors.. and me to help you on your way!
Not only do you get paid out every month for each customer you can take on distributors. encourage them like I do and get paid on their sales as well.
One day, say you could made redundant, needed a year off or wanted to retire early can you imagine what joy it is to have the regular income coming in. It's wonderful.
You have to work at it, but if you do genuine repeat wealth could be yours. I did it. You can too. For full details, why not email me at robbiethetrader@aol.com.
An overview is also available at http://www.telecomplus.org.uk/fabdeal you can sign up directly there but do tell me!

Trade tables follow! Trades are current open and recently closed trades. Closed trades feature the closing price and the amount I won or lost. All others are open. Trades get updated a little later than the narrative. Trading costs are ignored, however I also do not add in dividend payments and with the kinds of companies I buy, dividends tend to equal or outweigh costs. Spread rollovers ignored for web purposes. Tables as accurate as poss however a mistake or two can creep in and very occasionally if I forgot I sold or bought something it will be added at a later time.
Trades first reported Weds and Fri afternoons under "Markets" section.. afraid I can't do live trades as that would turn me into a tipster and I'd have to be regulated!
