SEPTEMBER 8, 2010
Farewell my summer love
** My new book - about spreadbetting - has just been published, you can pre-order it here:
http://books.global-investor.com/books/401334.htm?ginPtrCode=10453
Welcome to any new readers coming to the website from the new book, I would suggest you read the spreadbetting book in conjunction with Naked Trader, available here:
http://books.global-investor.com/books/27120.htm?ginPtrCode=10453
My Sept 24th seminar is close to sell out, there won't be another one till close to Xmas, see somewhere below....
***
I'm back now with twice weekly updates.. well, until mid December when I'm off to South Africa again for Xmas. Is it September already? How did that happen!
Goodness, so much has happened since the last update! We have had a brilliant summer, and staying in the UK has paid off for us so well. Even if the weather wasn't great at times it didn't matter.
No airport stress, just loads of fun doing different things.
So we spend the last week in a cottage right in the middle of nowhere, well kind of. A cottage that was at one time the lodge at the entrance to a castle and now is hired out by said hotel/castle.
It was brilliant! Whenever it rained we could use the hotel's swimming pool and facilities. Even better it didn't have internet access. Which meant I was forced to relax! I just nipped to the hotel twice a day to check on things.
We did endless activities. Christopher had great run trying horse and pony riding. We also went on long country walks, toured attractions and other castles, spent time in pretty villages and all sorts of other things.
We also played football, trampolined, tennis and all sorts. Which is presumably why I'm hobbling around with aches and pains in every department... Christopher is a very hard personal trainer.
We had some great meals out. It was great eating simple but well-cooked food, tasty without the stupid fussiness of Michelin stars.
One restaurant was especially memorable: The Old Inn in Drewstainton. We arrived on a quiet midweek evening to be greeted by the chef himself outside!
The restaurant is run by a lovely couple - he is a very talented chef. It's like visiting someone's nice house in the country.. a lovely menu and great food.
Plus a very friendly dog and cat! It's also a beautiful little village - real picture postcard stuff. So if you're ever around that area, worth a visit.
Not being used to the tiny country roads we pranged the car a few times - the bill is going to be huge!
I think my best memory is a simple one of knocking a football about with the lad on the edge of the golf course of the hotel as the sun set and the birds tweeted. It really is the simple free things in life that are often the most rewarding.
It's very weird getting back into a routine after the heady days of summer.. Christopher went back to school today, odd seeing him in school uniform again.
He's now in Year One. No longer a reception boy. He's a bit worried he's going to have to do some "real work". Know the feeling! But he seems happy to see his friends again and a lot of them wanted to sit next to him in class which can't be bad.
So, gotta get into that autumn groove. Which given by December 14th I'll be sitting in the South African sun, isn't going to be that difficult!
Thanks so much for the feedback on the new spreadbetting book. It was a bit nervewracking waiting for that. I did work hard on it and glad many of you are finding it useful.
Had a nice review on it from a reviewer at uk Analyst. He had actually bothered to read it properly (not may reviewers do) and the reviewer realised the book was designed to put people off spreadbetting who really should not be attempting it at all. The review is at this link: http://uk-analyst.com/shop/page-article/action-article.show/id-130007439
I'm glad to read many of you learned a lot from the horror stories from real traders. It really is worth remembering that more than 90% of day traders lose at spreadbetting - to be able to win at it you must have discipline and a trading plan as detailed in the book.
I hope the book will get you all into good habits re spreadbetting - anyway - you can order the book somewhere on this site!
My next seminar is pretty close now - on Friday September 24th. It's getting pretty full now and looks like it's heading for a sellout. So don't leave it till the last minute if you fancy spending a day with me and the markets.
Due to laziness I'm not doing a seminar in October this year so the next one won't be till end of November or December. So miss this one and it'll be a while till the next!
It'll be at Heathrow as usual - mail me at robbiethetrader@aol.com if interested with "Autumn seminar" in the subject line. I'll send you details.
Beginners and improvers welcome for September! Come and spend the day with me, the markets and some lovely people - and of course, lunch!
If you mail me I will then send you details and a full agenda of what is covered. Also more details below somewhere.
My seminars are designed for beginners, dabblers and improvers and deals with everything from how to look for winners, how to research, spreadbetting, level 2 use how to time trades and short, how to use advfn properly and run your portfolio without having to spend money on systems and tipsters.. and tons more.
A lot of the day comes directly from the live markets and I show you many of the tricks I use to get good prices live. And there might even be the odd live trade or 2!
The one off follow up seminar only for those of you who've been before on September 17th is sold out. After the success of the last couple, there will be another TA seminar with top trader Susan, on Dec 4th. If you're interested in learning all about TA from a brilliant trainer, don't miss it. Susan's lessons in TA will help you take the emotion out of trading. Mail me with "TA interested" in the subject line. You must have been to one of my normal ones to qualify for that.
Fancy getting the naked trader updates direct into your inbox? And a bit before it gets updates on the net including news from my pension trades made from my SIPP?
All you have to do is take a phone or energy service from the Utility Discount Warehouse at www.telecomplus.org.uk/fabdeal.

Many are saving a fortune from their energy bills.

Spreadbetting firm Tradefair Spreads has upped its offer exclusively to Naked Trader readers to a £100 credit. This offer is exclusive to me and not available anywhere else...
I've been using them for a few weeks to check that I'm happy with the service. As you know I don't take ads or allow referrals on the site unless it's a company I've used and I feel confident about.
What I like about it is it's easy to use, spreads are surprisingly tight on the smaller companies and interestingly an automated stop loss is applied to each trade - so beginners know what their max loss is from the outset.
Anyway they now offer a £100 credit as long as you deposit £100. You get the credit after you placed 5 trades (Terms and conditions apply)
If you'd like to apply for an account with Tradefair Spreads and get the freebie click this link:

The number of emails to me is nearly reaching saturation point and I'm struggling! I'm getting 100s which is lovely in a way but killing me in another.
The main problem is the length of some of them, indeed some run to the length of novels, so, please, help save my eyes and please keep mails to under 150 words.. you can do it! It's close to the stage where I am going to have to say I will answer all mails but those over 200 words will get deleted. Keep them short and sweet, please!!
Also, it's possible the answer you seek from me is already in FAQ's. And do remember I can't discuss individual shares with you as it would be classified as investment advice which I'm not authorised to give.
Many of you enjoy the cheap advfn toplists bronze deal through me as do many of you with the cheap level 2. However many of you say you want a half-way house to include real-time share prices always on.
So I'm pleased to announce I've managed to seal a new deal with Advfn for its "Silver" service - that's always on real-time share prices for a good saving (Bronze toplists etc are included in this).
The deal is via me you can save £30 for your first year by paying just £138.06 inc vat via me instead of £167.47.
Just mail me for full details if you'd like it with "silver" in the subject line.
They've just re-published "The Zulu Principle" by Jim Slater who's written a 2008 update at the beginning.
This is a brilliant classic book. Reading this is a real pleasure and it was a great idea to republish.
Jim believes like I do the best gains can come from smaller stocks and in an easy to read style takes you through how to evaluate smaller companies that are about to become bigger ones - he uses some excellent examples.
Really this is a must read for all more longer-term investors or anyone looking to grow their money... a number of you have also written to me about this book and praising it.
Here is the link to buy it:

Here's a very topical one: The Little Book of Bull Moves in Bear Markets by Peter Schiff.
The book is all about how to keep portfolios up in a down market. He focusses a lot on how to play commodities and win with some sensible advice especially on natural resources and precious metals. He is very much a realist and there is no rubbish here: some straight talking and some interesting strategies.
Everyone who invests should think seriously about keeping portfolios up in bad times so this book should be read.
Well worth picking up at this link:

Several people have asked me for a recommendation on a book which shows how to study accounts in a reasonably easy way. The one I like the most is http://books.global-investor.com/books/15717.htm?ginPtrCode=10453 by Robert Leach. Ten crunch questions to ask before buying any company.
It' s a decent easy-to-read book with several key chapters and it's highly recommended. It's one I keep and dip into from time to time. To order, click this link... http://books.global-investor.com/books/15717.htm?ginPtrCode=10453
The best book on charting and easiest read on the subject is http://books.global-investor.com/books/15618.htm?ginPtrCode=10453 by Alistair Blair. Click here -> http://books.global-investor.com/books/15618.htm?ginPtrCode=10453
Another good one is the second edition of http://books.global-investor.com/books/23792.htm?ginPtrCode=10453 by Peter Temple. Included in this one is how to use spreadbetting, CFD's warrants and trackers to reduce risk. And there are some decent trading strategies too.
This is an excellent book for new investors and also experienced ones. It explains all the things you may not be sure about in the markets and will explain the tools that are there. Naked Trader Seminar Latest News
Fancy spending a day with me, learning all the ways I have learned over the years to find good shares and play the markets? Well, you can at one of my seminars!
Booking is now open for the Naked Trader seminar on Friday Sept 24th.
Price is £495 plus vat.
That includes three course lunch, coffees, snacks etc.
The seminar is mainly aimed at beginners and dabblers though improvers are welcome too.
Topics covered using live market feeds all day include: Market psychology, level 2 - a simple guide to how to use it for better timing; how to value companies; finding companies that are about to rise. I will also cover techniques for handling events such as the recent meltdown and volatility.
Spreadbetting: How to use it to gain an edge and go short. Market makers - how they work and how to beat them; how to stop losing money and make it instead and plenty more.
How to plan trade entries and exits - how to research companies and understand reports, plus all those niggly questions you always wanted to ask. How to set stop losses and targets. Charts and how to use them.
Also covered: Market maker tricks: How to spot tree shakes and use them in your favour, How to tell when NOT to buy a share. I use live ADVFN all day with lots of level 2 and looks at all kind of live market data.
The idea behind the seminar is SIMPLICITY. I don't use jargon or fancy words - everything is in PLAIN ENGLISH! No question is too stupid and the event is held in a friendly relaxed and supportive environment.
The idea is you will come away from the event I hope a wise and better investor with lots of new ideas. I try and translate complex topics into easy bite size pieces. I also aim for it to be entertaining as well as instructive.
If you are interested please e-mail me at robbiethetrader@aol.com with "seminar interested" in the subject line and I will send you full details of the event including comments from those who have come to previous seminars and you can then decide whether you would like to come. See you there!
One seminar attendee Clare wanted to write a testimonial about her experiences at the seminar which follows now!
"I've just come back buzzing from one of Robbie's seminars. What a day! He's just brilliant, and manages to pack an awful lot into one day, and with his enthusiastic and humorous delivery the day just flies by. There are no gimmicks, no sell, no "˜get-rich-quick' promises, just his own solid, sound approach which he has learnt over the years and which works.
He shows you how to minimise the risks and maximise the profits and points out the banana skins on the way. Where the seminar really comes into its own is when he teaches using live level 2. Hearing him talk through his thought processes and reasoning is invaluable, and really brings home everything from the book. He has endless patience answering peoples' questions, and really seems to care that everybody understands.
On top of that, you meet some really nice like minded people and swap e mail addresses, you're plied with
chocolates and coffee all day, have a great lunch and spend the evening getting tiddled with Robbie in the
bar afterwards! You might even get to see the amazing crocodile boots . . . .
Don't worry about the cost, it's easily worth it, and you'll soon make it back with your new-found investment skills, and in what you're no longer losing. If you're thinking of going along to his next seminar, whether you're a novice or an experienced trader, don't hesitate ""just go!
Thanks Clare, did you want the tenner in cash, or will a cheque do?

Naked Rambling
At that age peer pressure is very hard not to cave in to. One also suspects he might have been threatened to go along with it or expect some "nasty things" to happen at home. Just a guess on my part.
At 18 the pressure would be enormous and it would take a very courageous youngster not to just go along with it.
However it must be sorted out. Some parts of sport are terribly fixed and the problem is as a spectator you begin to lose heart and just not enjoy it anymore.
I would have thought in cricket technology could be employed to stop fixing with dubious-looking run outs. no balls and the rest looked at in detail. It's a shame to see sport ruined.
Oh why did the producers of BB not protect John McCririck from eviction after 3 days? He was the only one that could have kept it entertaining, Same goes for Coolio.
Indeed why didn't they just ditch the normal series this year and run a really good celebrity one this year?
With Brian odds on to win and Chantelle likely to be second it's hard to find a decent bet.
So for a bit of fun at a big price I backed Victor to win at 50-1 for a tenner and to come second at 10-1. Unlikely to be paid out but for £20 you never know. If there is a betting scam on this he's the likeliest!
I got that price on Betfair - he's come in a bit to 37-1 now which is a good price considering he's 14-1 with the normal bookies.
To sign up to Betfair go to betfair.com and for a £25 credit to your account when you get to referral code on your application, tap in this code: AGRUU7EMH
Hurrah! The new series of Mad Men starts tonight on BBC 4 at 10pm. If you haven't seen it yet, record the new series and watch it from the beginning on DVD.
It's the best thing since the Sopranos and for the first time in ages something worth watching.
Dragons Den remains entertaining though sadly though I like him I think James will be axed. Problem with the show is people aren't quite sure what he will bring to the table and therefore don't accept his offers even if they are lower.
Though what a great moment this week when arrogant Peter Jones was convinced his higher offer would succeed against Duncan's lower offer. He sold himself hard and then the entrepreneur went and shook hands with Duncan. The look on Peter's face was priceless.
However successful you become you should never become arrogant. And Peter is kind of taking over the show in a way. Be interesting to see a new lineup next year.
The spreadbetting firm I use for sports betting is here:
Via this link Open a Sporting Index account, place 5 bets (each bet must have the potential to win and lose £20 or more) and they give you a £200 Total Goals bet on any live football match. Or you can choose £100 cash instead
http://www.sportingindex.com/?tpid=6755
Do remember if you do bet you ought to treat sports spreadbetting as entertainment - and expect to lose! Also with spreadbetting work out what your max loss could be and make sure you can afford it! In other words if you say backed the favourite at 15 for a fiver and they come nowhere your max loss is £75.
Naked Mail
A huge thank you for your great productive seminar.
I wish I was more fresh to get even more out of your great effort and energy in the evening when you were company searching and going through thorough research on screening them through your detective work, way out of my head! Hard work , ha?!!!!!,...
Due to the Travel Lodge fire alarm incident, I just had 2 hour sleep so to keep eyes open and most of all my BRAIN sharp after 5 pm, was hard work but wow how great it was. Thank you so much. I am sure I missed loads when I left at 8 pm .
With your great sense of humour and wealth of expertise, on my mind, you will remain a great role model as a successful trader and perhaps one day if it is meant in this life, I can acquire your smart style! Wish you ongoing great success with your trading and most of all health and happiness and if god willing hope to see you again perhaps on a follow up or charting seminars but for now, let's put what I learnt from you into practice!
Thanks Mel. Glad it was useful. And you were a great sport!
Richard writes:
Thanks for a fab session on Friday, after some hesitation to part with the money initially, I'd have to say it was well worth it, a really good insight in to how you do things and frankly if we all follow your example and advice, there is no reason why we should not end up in the money to some degree.
One of the things I realised about half way through, was that day trading is not a good occupation short term, though once someone builds up a stash of money as you have then it can become a good way to earn a living as you do, obviously you don't day trade but your level of expertise and your system of trading is well built up and reliable and we should seek to emulate that.
Yes, I sometimes have trouble parting with money Richard!
Bill writes:
Nice to have you back.
Just read your news letter you say you are sitting on about £ 100,000 Profit. Can i have the Balance as i make it about £ 176,000 with spread bets.
Thanks Bill! Never realised, I was guessing! Thought my balances looked rather healthy! I think I'll hang onto them but thanks for the kind offer of relieving me of it!
Shital writes:
I would like to personally thank you for a wonderful seminar yesterday. The time you spent with us through out the day was very valuable and I learnt constantly through the day.
It was worth every moment. Your trading skills and expertise goes along way and have learnt everything a new beginner needs to in the shares world.
I have learnt to be patient, calm and most of all not to be emotional, of course not to forget ALL the knowledge through out.
I could go on and on but a big thank you for being their until we needed you and the wonderful pizza.
Thanks Shital glad you feel inspired!
John writes:
Thanks for a great seminar last Friday, everyone I spoke to enjoyed it and marvelled at how you kept going so long; you certainly gave value for money.
If the seminar taught me anything it was how to trade in a more professional and detached manner. I realise up till now I was just playing at it.
Thank you once again for a fantastic day that will remain with me for the rest of my life.
Thanks John, though my wife sometimes complains I go on for too long.....

Markets
While the market looks strong, the higher it goes of course the bigger the chance of a nasty pullback so while profits are still rocketing I need to be a little cautious with what I buy at these higher levels. There are some encouraging economic stats out and about but September can be a horrid month with grumpy traders back in front of their screens after a month of sand and sangria.
Promethean World (PRW) has been one of the worst IPOs this year slumping badly ever since admission. However at the current price it looks too much of a bargain so I snapped some up, 3,000 at 118 with a medium term view and a target of 150. Stop 110. I think the market has got this one wrong and is scared of schools not being able to spend in the UK. But the UK is not its market! The USA is a massive market with very few schools over there having access to interactive whiteboards and other tools. I have the feeling this could be a nice winner with a return to the issue price of 180 a possible.
I topped up with some more Alterian (ALN). I bought another 2,000 at 178.9 even though I still hold onto some I bought at 50p where I have more than trebled. A peer in the US got bid for and I think it's a matter of time before it's taken out in the 250-300 area. So I hold medium-term for hopefully that event! Target 250 stop 150.
Micro Focus (MCRO) looks a good recovery play - this one got slaughtered recently but it's on the way back. A new head cheese is in place too. Bought this on a spreadbet for £20 at 329. target 400 stop 315.
Finally I picked up another load of Yule Catto (YULE). I thought it was way undervalued when I bought at 195 and they still look undervalued at 230! This time with the ISAs pretty fully invested I went for an extra spreadbet with £20 at 229 with a raised target of 270. Stop is 210.
Onto some sells.
I sold PV Crystalox at 59 for a profit of £425 - its report didn't quite convince. However could be interesting after a recent pullback soon.
Latchways has bored me into submission so sold with a yawn at 705 for a massive profit of £34. But I did get a dividend on it as well. The short in Chemring was doing well but it started to climb strongly so I exited at 2690 for a profit of £170.
So the portfolio has done rather nicely while I've been away without me having to do a thing and there have been a number of decent dividend payments too.
Massive profits remain on paper with something like profits of £100,000
Creston is creeping up nicely and continues to look undervalued. Photo Me has rushed up to the mid 50s. The Ocado short is doing ok. It released a statement which didn't go down well. Revenue is up but show me the profit!
IG Group has surged higher while I've been on holiday and continues to look good. It's also gone ex dividend for a nice payout. Actually quite a lot of dividends have been paid out including the special one of 100p from Heritage.
The bid for Spice has been raised and looks like it'll go through at 70p to make it a nice double my money and a bit! Sitting for the moment just in case of any further bids.
Devro has been doing really well - a lovely profit on that now and the strong uptrend remains in place. 240 currently proving a bit of a sticking point though.
Dialight's been very strong though not surprisingly pausing around the 400 level for now. JP Morgan has snapped up a huge load of shares. . I'm up more than £10,000 here. If it can break 400 that would be extremely bullish. No harm in it at least consolidating the recent massive rises. However 400 may remain a barrier till another update perhaps.
Gold play African Barrick is going well and has nearly hit the target! And the HMV bet is going well, very nicely higher today!
Little gamble Trifast remains steadily higher.
Volex has boomed after its update and despite nearly doubling now I'm holding tight!! I'm having a great run with Mulberry and the good news is the Mrs NT signal is still green as once again she's been looking up Mulberry bags on the internet! They've also appointed a new director who looks good.
Telecom Plus is heading up to its all time high near 400 but this time there shouldn't be much to let it slip.
Enormous profits here - in real life with options I got I have profits of something like £120,000 - if you include the huge dividends including something like £6,000 on the way this month it's been an amazing investment. It is tempting to take profits but there looks like more to come. Obviously many would be tempted to take profits around here but this long-termer looks like it could stop here for a bit and then get another re-rating.
XP Power has zoomed up even higher and now past 800!! I'm still holding onto the original buy at 150! Shows sometimes it really is worth being patient. Touching 850 now.
Lovely Petrofac has surged again heading for nearly 1400 and together with Enquest sees me sitting on profits way in excess of £20,000. Of course it's volatile but a strong uptrend remains intact.
A potential bid for Hyder still looks like it's in there for nothing! It can't get through 350 but a bid could easily see 500.
The Nestor Heathcare bid story hasn't worked its way through yet. As I write the market continues to think there won't be any rival bidders or a higher bid than 90p. However I haven't taken profits because even if the bid is called off the shares are worth 80p anyway and in the end a bid will come, and as it could easily be higher than 90p I'm sticking with it for however long it takes. I wouldn't be surprised if AA/Saga come back in with a higher offer.
Aggreko has seen a massive rise and it gets further bought every time it weakens - made a big amount here in a short time but I'm intending to stay with it. Some bid rumours have been floating about in the paper s but who knows? It's going higher today.
No real disappointments and nothing on a yellow card which is rather nice.
So, extremely pleased with progress.. it's anyone guess now what happens. Double dip or no double dip? Get set for the game to commence...
I've been getting e-mails regarding my use of direct market access and who I use. I've tried a few and for me the easiest system for me is here:
http://www.igmarkets.co.uk/?QPID=1079&QPPID=1
Direct market access means you can place orders directly onto the order book bypassing brokers and market-makers with a chance to buy at the "sell" price. I would suggest you ensure you know what you're doing first but IG does provide much education with its "tradesense" educational tool which comes with it.
I also use its spreadbetting service too along with other firms like Tradefair because it now provides trailing stops which to me is a pretty sensible way of trading. Link is here: -
http://www.igindex.co.uk/?QPID=1078&QPPID=1
that also includes a pretty decent educational programme. As usual before opening accounts please read all the warnings on the sites. You can lose a lot of money if you're not careful so pay close attention to them and make sure you always understand what you are doing and what your potential losses are.

I still get paid EVERY MONTH for sales I made back in 1999! Every time a customer uses broadband or the phone or switches on a light you get paid.
It's a great business and backed by a stock market company (Telecom Plus), a dedicated team of advisors.. and me to help you on your way!
Not only do you get paid out every month for each customer you can take on distributors. encourage them like I do and get paid on their sales as well.
One day, say you could made redundant, needed a year off or wanted to retire early can you imagine what joy it is to have the regular income coming in. It's wonderful.
You have to work at it, but if you do genuine repeat wealth could be yours. I did it. You can too. For full details, why not email me at robbiethetrader@aol.com.
An overview is also available at http://www.telecomplus.org.uk/fabdeal you can sign up directly there but do tell me!

Trade tables follow! Trades are current open and recently closed trades. Closed trades feature the closing price and the amount I won or lost. All others are open. Trades get updated a little later than the narrative. Trading costs are ignored, however I also do not add in dividend payments and with the kinds of companies I buy, dividends tend to equal or outweigh costs. Spread rollovers ignored for web purposes. Tables as accurate as poss however a mistake or two can creep in and very occasionally if I forgot I sold or bought something it will be added at a later time.
Trades first reported Weds and Fri afternoons under "Markets" section.. afraid I can't do live trades as that would turn me into a tipster and I'd have to be regulated!
